So this past weekend I joined a new gym that has a lap pool. I’ve never swam other than for fun. So what are your tips? And I’m guessing my bathing suits I use at the beach won’t work for the lap pool…any recommandations?

Tips, huh? You’re right about bikinis not being suitable. Occasionally you’ll find a two piece that works, but I prefer a one piece. Nothing kills your stride like pushing off the wall and then stopping to frantically grab your bottoms before they slip off your ankles! Definitely get a good pair of goggles (test them out in the store by pressing them to your face without putting on the strap – they should stay in place for at least a few seconds) and you may find you want a swim cap. Ponytails don’t stay in well in my experience.
As for actual work out tips… it depends on how comfortable you are in the water and the strokes. Can you do crawl, breast and backstroke? Also, they’ll likely have kickboards you can borrow. Those are a good way to mix things up.
