Here are some great questions to ask when looking for a travel agent.

1. How long have they been in business?

2. Why are they recommending a resort or destination? Have they personally been to this resort or destination within the last three years?

3. What professional orgranizations do they belong to?

4. What professional certifications do they carry?

5. Will they monitor your booking for flight schedule changes and promos that come out after you’ve booked?

6. Can they ensure that you won’t get bumped to another resort upon arrival?

7. Will they personally be available while you’re traveling?

8. What kind of travel insurance do they offer?

9. Do they have any references? Are you able to find good reviews about them online?

10. Can they offer you a honeymoon registry?

Here are some things that are big red flags:

1. If they ask you to pay for your trip in cash-run! In some states, this is a violation of the seller of travel law. Always pay for travel with a credit or debit card.

2. If they don’t offer you travel insurance, or can’t explain what it covers.

3. If they seem to only sell one resort chain.

4. If they haven’t traveled anywhere within the last few years.

5. If they just throw prices at you without getting to know you first. Again price and value are not the same. It won’t matter how good of a deal it is if you’re uncomfortable the entire time you’re there.

You might want to try the local board for wherever you’re from because a lot of places are not chains. Also, if you have AAA I believe that they provide some travel services (but honestly I don’t know exactly what kinds or if they’re really “travel agents”).

I love HAWAII…actually, if you look at the Hawaii tourism board’s website, they recommend Hawaii specialists, sites like gohawaii.com and those type of agents get extra deals.  I did a quick search on weddingbee and a fellow bride recommended the agency I am using (just different agent) as the best for Hawaii.

Rhonda at VIP Vacations.  Will beat any price online, knows Hawaii like no one else, etc.

[email protected] is the email.

Hope that helps!
