I am not a vegetarian, but what about a vegtable/fruit platter. Even as a nonvegetarian I would like that.
I'm not a vegatian, but I'd be upset if my only option were a cheese platter.
What about a vegetarian crostini... like a bruschetta or crostini with herbed goat cheese and roasted red peppers or a crostini with a artichoke dip on it
Or you could do a stuffed mushroom with cream cheese, parmesean, breadcrumbs, green chilis, and shallots
There are tons of vegetaian options for a passed appitizer.
I would try and do one veggie passed app--like maybe a spanakopita or a bruschetta? Especially if it's two hours long, cheese and crackers might not satiate people. But it also depends how many vegetarians you'll have at the wedding.
I voted "yes" because I'm sure your friends won't mind. I'm a vegetarian and I'm used to limited options for sure. But - I also would never think that grilled vegetables were a waste!! If the grilled vegetable platter is on the cheaper side - then I'd say add that.
I think your friends would also appreciate being consulted - give them a call!
What about a dip and veggie platter. Maybe hummus with veggies and pita-bread?
@mcnetn3:the caterer does a crostini with goat cheese and a stuffed mushroom with goat cheese. I tried both (wanting to find a passed vegetarian option) and both were gross! It was more the quality of the goat cheese that I had issue with...
@PrairieGirl:thanks for your input. The reason I say it was a waste is because the caterer gave me the impression that it wasn't very good... I've tried some of their grilled veggies before and I wasn't terribly impressed with them either.
Here's a picture of the cheese setup that I took at a recent wedding from the caterer
Honestly, I have a bit of an issue with accommodating a very small minority of your guests, especially if the other option isn't as appetizing. If you choose a less appetizing veggie option to appease 3% of your guests (who do have a cocktail hour option with the cheese tray), 97% of your guests who may also find the veggie option distasteful are missing out on a yummier option!
Do you have any option with the 5 appetizers to add something that might be more suitable to vegeterians? For us we are having a quiche and tomato and mozzerella on a baguette along with beef teriyaki, sesame chicken, crab rangoons.
As a vegetarian, I would be disappointed that there were not more options, especially if it is two hours long. That said, I am used to not being able to eat much at certain places and could make it to dinner on cheese and crackers. It is a waste to pay for sub-par food to just accommodate a few people. So I might be a little disappointed, but I wouldn't be outright upset.
@oracle: if your caterer doesn't have any yummy vegetarian options, than I'd just stick to the cheese platter, better to have all your apps taste good than to try to accomodate a vegetarain option that isn't very good.
I'm not a vegetarian, but I think just a cheese station would leave something to be desired. Especially if the non-veg appetizers are heavier, like hot things in pastry, etc. Think about it this way -- your vegetarian guests are going to experience a two-hour open bar with just a small nibble of cheese. I LOVE cheese, and the cheese station you posted a photo of looks slammin', but still... to me this might spell D-R-U-N-K.
What about asking one of your closer vegetarian friends to do a tasting with you? Maybe some of the choices that didn't appeal to you would totally appeal to a vegetarian? I think it would be a nice gesture to include one more. Have you tried asking your caterer if they'd consider doing something off-menu?
Thanks, everyone, for your helpful input.
I talked to one of the vegetarians and she said just the cheese would be totally fine (although, that's her answer for everything).
Some of you articulated what my issue is - which is the vegetarian options they had were sub-par which made me not want to serve those. I may opt for a fruit platter - but, there was so much fruit in the cheese tray, I thought it was a bit of fruit overkill.
It's hard to say what to do in this situation--at the end of the day, you've invited people who love you. They are going to be happy no matter what because they'll be happy for you! I wouldn't be delighted not to have any passed apps (I am no longer veg but was for 10 years), but I'd get over it. They will, too; just make sure there's fun stuff like dancing after and they'll be distracted!
I'm a vegetarian and I would be perfectly happy with that. It looks like that cheese setup has a ton of options.
I used to be a vegetarian and honestly Id be a little upset if all I had to eat was fruit and cheese. I get VERY hungry throughout the day and have to eat small meals pretty regularly. Fruit and cheese would not be enough to hold me over until dinner.
For our veggie apps we are doing: spinach spanakopita, vegetarian sushi, crab cakes (pescatarian) and then fruit and cheese display
How many vegetarians do you have??
Didnt see you had 4 veggie friends! Hmm I would just ask them and if they are fine with it stick to your original plan. Or let them know all they will have as an option is the fruit/cheese platter so they can prepare like have a granola bar before the ceremony if necessary!
I agree with the previous suggestion of adding a vegetable/dip platter (just cut-up fresh veggies, not the grilled platter you mentioned). It's pretty standard, apealing to veg/non-veg alike, and shouldn't be that expensive.

One of the vegetarian options I was having ended up being 4 x's the price I was expecting - so I'm nixing it.
I'm doing a 2 hour long cocktail hour - open bar, photo booth and appetizers.
There are 5 apps all together - but only 1 is suitable for vegetarians. That's a cheese platter - it's an assortment of 5 cheeses, crackers and fruit garnish (grapes, strawberries, blueberries).
My question is - as a vegetarian, would that be enough for you to nibble on?? Or, would you want another passed appetizer?
The other challenge is - I really didn't like any of the vegetarian apps that I tried... I could do a basic grilled vegetable platter... but that seems like a bit of a waste.
I think I only have 4 vegetarians out of 140 guests - but 3 of those are my super close friends (like wedding party type close).
