Hey y'all! I need to make a pecan pie. I haven't made one before! I need to make it from scratch; no pre-made pie crust, no corn syrup.

I do not have a food processor (it's on our registry list!); just a Kitchenaid stand mixer. Will it be a problem to make the crust in there?

This is our first "engaged" holiday season, and I'll be spending the holidays with FH's family whom I love dearly. FMIL has been warned of my inexperience with pecan pie, but still gave me a big bag of pecans to start with. Ha!

    Any good recipes? Tips?

I don't have a recipe, but the best one I ever tasted had a splash of Kaluha in it!

I don't have a recipe but Walmart bakery has the absolute best pecan pie I've had. I typically can't eat it when purchased elsewhere or homemade because it's way too sweet but their's actually isn't.

Thanks everyone! I know there are lots of places to go for recipes & such, but I was just wondering if any of the 'Bees have experience with this.

I'm off to the grocery store! :)

If you have no experience making pies, it is highly uncalled for to expect you to be able to make one perfectly on the first try. Especially with the pressure of being "perfect" for the holidays that many people inflict on brand new cooks and bakers. If anyone even knows you have never made one before, there is no reason whatsoever to make demands of you that you are unable to fulfill. Not everyone is skilled in the art of pie making and no one expects anyone who has no experience whatsoever to make their own crust and it isn't a crime of any sort to use a pre-baked crust to make your job easier. Honestly, just go to the grocery and get a pie that is pre-made to alleviate the frustration you will go through to make one in the first place. No one has to know it was pre-made either as long as they don't see the packaging. You can practice your pie making skills throughout the year when there isn't any pressure to perform.

Also, tons of people don't use food processors at all when baking pie crusts. Practically everyone I know makes them with a fork in a bowl but a stand mixer will work fine.

Wow Ember... thanks for the very strong advice. (?!) I must have sounded terribly inconvenienced & stressed in my post!

I love to bake, I've done it for years, and I like to bake pies. I just haven't made a pecan pie yet. I think it'll be fun to try!

I asked about the stand mixer because my food processor gave out last year. I have carpal tunnel/r.s.i. in my arms, so I don't like to stir things... but yes, a fork in a bowl usually works.

I volunteered to make whatever FMIL needed, and she suggested a pie. She gave me a bag of pecans and said for me to try it & see what happens. We are both laughing about it. It's no big deal. :)

I'll let everyone know how it came out!

Here's how it came out. It was a big hit! Everyone liked it... FMIL had two slices! ;)

I substituted brown rice syrup for corn syrup and used a basic BH&G recipe. For the kitchenaid crust, I used this recipe, substituting butter for shortening, and it was perfect!

I am attempting to attach a picture...

why no corn syrup?  Is it just a personal preference?

I have a good recipe but it uses 1 cup of dark corn syrup.  The secret ingredient is 1 tbsp of bourbon!
