The ring is bought. Btw, we are waiting for the "right" moment to arise yet again. I kinda like it this way as it will be a surprise.
For a honeymoon, we're considering the virgin islands or to Puerto Rico, where I was born.
Wow, so funny that you both have ties with famous southern authors! So the Hemingway house would be a great fit!
I'm not getting married there, but I've been there a few times (I live in South FL). A couple things to keep in mind- I'm assuming, if they allow you to have weddings on the grounds, it would have to be outside. The house is rather small, and filled with actual furniture so you wouldn't be able to have it inside. Is there a size limit there? The grounds aren't that big.
Also, keep in mind that KW is hoooooot during that time of year, and it can be rainy (although it's more rainy in June/July than it is in August. You could still pull it off, but you'd definitely need a tent, and some big fans, so just keep that in mind for your budget.
KW would be a great place for your guests. There are tons of houses to rent, if they want an economical option, or lots of cute b&bs. There's lots of nightlife on Duval St, and plenty to do around KW during the day too!
Hi bellenga-
My cousin was married at the Hemmingway House in Key West in April of 2006. The ceremony was outside overlooking the pool and the reception was held on the lawn under a small tent. The wedding was about 50-60 people. The venue was FABULOUS! I loved it and I am not just saying that because I love kitties! They pictures were beyond adorable around the beautiful grounds and a few near the house. As a guest, I absolutely loved Key West and the Hemmingway House setting.
Good Luck!
Thanks! I actually am ALLERGIC to cats but love em and can take zyrtec...but do love the six toed cuties.
If heat is a huge issue, we could opt for a sunset wedding with an evening reception. Ours will be rather small if we opt for that place, and while I know it's held outside, would love to have some pics made in the courtyard area within. I once toured it and loved it!
@BBT, do you know of reputable coordinators that are affiliated with that venue?
@PK, thanks for the suggestions..would do a tent if we have enough. Maybe a small tent. Do you happen to know who was the coordinator/planner or florist she used? Also who is a good photographer there?
I saw there's a site that sells "packages" of that house but that's something that is not me.
I don't know of any coordinators affiliated there. I believe it is a museum site, so you might want to call them directly and see if they work with someone in particular.
A sunset wedding would be lovely. Also, JUST a heads up-- Key West has a completely different mindset when it comes to timelines and getting things done. They are SO INCREDIBLY laid back-- things will get done when they get done, so just be prepared to cut vendors a LOT of slack if you have your wedding there. I know it sounds silly-- but I'm getting married in the upper keys, and they aren't quite as laid back as Key West and I still have a tough time sometimes. They just have a completely different attitude about life and in order to make it through while maintaining your sanity, you just have to accept this, and know that things will get done... eventually... :)
it would be a lovely place. I've been there a few times, i have cats, i love cats, I love all animals. But with that being said- the property does smell...like cats.
if you can- before you put down your deposit, try to scoot down there for a lovely mini vacation and check it out. (maybe my nose is more sensitive to kitty smells..)
Thanks..I've been there before and didn't smell anything..plus the venue area is outside so I doubt it's kitty-ish. I'll call them and check them out.
@ BBT - I am looking for a venue in the upper keys for a wedding in May 2010. Is there places you recommend?

T and I are having a sit down discussion this weekend and deciding what we'd like to do..FINALLY..but he knows that until we're officially e'd (ring and all) that I won't do a thing. Yet he wants us to talk wedding planning and begin making a start with venue.
We'd like something unique, fun, and we love to read. His family has a HUGE personal tie with a famous (probably the most famous) southern author and I have a tie with one also (different one). One brainstorming idea to merge beach and love of all things literary, was to check out the Hemingway House in Key west. It would be a fun destination for all involved and a very cool venue. Maybe a book-ish theme for the flowers (somewhat similar but with tropical flowers and a book-ish flair like Ms. Avo did)
Any brides marry there and are there any decent wedding planners (not the pick a package type of wedding, not even a consideration) down there?
