I've been on two cruises, both were 3 day cruises to the Bahamas. I don't know why I went on the second one because the first one was kind of lame and the second one was no better.
But I'm not a cruise person. I dig the weather and tropical locales, but I don't like all of the scheduled activities and forced interactions with people.
Bring Dramamine, though, because you probably will get seasick. Most cruise ships provide it but you'll have to wait in line for it.
I just went on my furst cruise back in September 09, it was 8 days long and it was the best trip ever!
We went to South America it was so great! You will have agreat time. Which cruise line are using?
@lolaj:n Oh wow I am glad that you had a great time!
I'm not sure which cruise line it is because my sister never told me...I do hope its a good one when we book it.
The fiance and I went on a 7 day crusie to Alaska on Holland America and we had a great time! Look at the activities on board to make sure it's your style cruise (i.e. older crowd v younger crowd), check out the room sizes, and make sure they stop in towns/beaches where you want to stop. Alaska had a lot of itineraries, so that was definitely a differentiator.
ive been on 2 7 day cruises to the carribbean. me and fiance are going a southern caribbean one for the HM
THEY ARE AMAZING.
I liked the 7 day/night one I went on this summer. I think a shorter one wouldnt have been that relaxing
Any recommendations on cruise lines, websites to check out or where/who you booked your trip through...cost? Thanks a lot!
I went on a 7 day cruise.
bring some extra snacks/drinks if you can, bc everyting on the cruise is super expensive
budget in lots of "tips"....at the end of the cruise, they will give you a long list of people you are expected to tip and how much they recommend
also budget for excursions...I know some people do them *not* through the cruiseline, but then you risk getting LEFT by your boat if there is a problem getting back in time...they are pricey but worth it.
just got back from my first cruise and i LOVED it. you will have fun. keep in mind each ship is different and each company is different and where you go makes a difference too - so do your research. i used www.cruisecritic.com and they helped immensely!!!
My best friend and I went on a 3 day cruise a couple of years ago, and it was a blast! We went to the Bahamas. My best advice is bring magazines or books! Because as fun as it sounds to spend a lot of time relaxing until you get to your location, you can only eat so much (and trust me, you will), and there are only so many activities and you will find yourself laying around on the upper deck a lot. So, make sure you bring something free to do or else your inexpensive $197 cruise will become a $500 or more cruise.
I have been on several cruises and am craving to go on another one! I absolutely love to cruise! I usually go on the 7 day cruises, and haven't been on a 3 day cruise, but I'm sure you will have a blast! Just remember to relax and have fun! I have been on 3 different cruise lines : Norwegian, Royal Caribbean and Carnival. Out of the 3 Carnival was my least favorite, but I think that is because it was the smallest of the 3 I had been on and it was my 3rd cruise, so I was a little spoiled by the other 2. But I had a couple of friends that went with me on the 3rd cruise who had never cruised before and they loved it! Just take in everything and enjoy the views and the people watching!!! I'm so jealous!!
My FI and I went on cruise in July 09... that's were he proposed to me at!!! We went through Carnival Cruise Line out of New Orleans, LA. We went to Cozumel and Progresso. I loved it!!! We paid 600 dollars each, but that covered rooming, all meals, entertainment and shows, workshops, and one excursion. At a price so cheap you may want to check to see what is included in the package. We only needed money for when the ships ports and we visited the different markets.
Make sure you pack light. Make sure you have all proper documentation.... birth certificate, passport, and ID.
Thank you ladies for all the wonderful tips and ideas! Its very helpful for us and we appreciate it! Any other suggestions are still welcome as well! Thanks for helping out :o)
The best thing I did was bring an empty water bottle with me. That way when I went to the deck or on shore I had water to drink without having to pay an arm and leg for it. My other recommendation would be to make sure your sunblock is not the spray kind. Mine sprayed out all in my suitcase and I ended up having to buy more.
I ADORE cruises! I've only been on Carnival, and I absolutely love it!
My biggest recommendation would be to bring a power strip! Most of the rooms only have room to plug one or two things in, so it's nice to have some extra room for straighteners, camera chargers, etc.
I have been on a 7 day Caribbean cruise and it was amazing. The cruise I went on was a freestyle type of cruise and I really liked not having to do things if I didn't want to and being able to eat when I wanted and where I wanted. There were lots of things that were scheduled but there was no pressure to do those things.
I would bring some sort of antiemetic (meclizine, dramamine) because you might feel a little seasick. Also, it is a very good idea to have an empty water bottle that you fill up on your own because it can get very expensive paying for drinks on board.
i've been on two, both 7day cruises - 1 was to eastern caribbean and the other to the western :)
the w. caribbean was my senior year hs spring break trip, so needless to say i don't remember much besides boozin and dancin! ;P although i did love climbing dun river falls and the cheap shopping we did in cozumel!
the e. caribbean was with FI in 2008... it was AMAZING, just to be away from the cold MI weather! we went snorkeling, night kayaking, etc.
do's: pick out excursions (hosted by the cruise line) and sign up ASAP! pack your meds (tylenol, midol, etc) and sunscreen!! buy the drink packages (otherwise it can ADD UP!)
don't: overpack, shop at the jewelry stores (overpriced and u don't know what you're getting!!)
I second the Cruise Critic recommendation. It is a wonderful site with lots of great information and reviews. If you can find out what ship you're going on, you can look at the specifics on it and what activities there are. Definitely don't over pack, since there isn't a ton of space in your room, but for 3 days you should be fine. I'm going on my 5th cruise for my HM because I love them so much! Don't expect 5-star cuisine, but there is LOTS of food and lots of variety.
Cruise Critic is a big help! I've been on 6 cruises (5 on Carnival and 1 on Royal) and they have all been a blast!
Definitely bring the power strip so you can charge more then one thing at a time. Also I suggest a hoodie or sweater because even if it's hot outside, it can get cold in the dining rooms or show rooms.
Here's a pic of FI and me before our muster drill on our cruise last year.
Wow thanks guys for all of your recommendations and tips! I am glad that a majority of you had a BLAST! I do hope the same will be for me and my family when we go!!! Now I'm getting very excited about the trip!!! Thanks so much bees!
I love cruises! before I went, I thought it was lame, but once I went on the 1st one, I fell in love!LMAO I like going to different islands at once, rather than being stuck on one island. I've only been on Carnival, but I loved it. The burgers were the best. I wish I could have one right now!
LOVE LOVE Crusing...going in 2 weeks to Key West & Grand Cayman. Have been to both places before so I don't expect to do a lot of sightseeing, just relaxing.
Not sure if it was mentioned above (I just quickly skimmed what people were say) but when booking your room, always make sure that you check the deck above you. On some ships if you are staying in a room that is below the pool decks and/or sports deck, you can hear the staff moving the chairs around first thing in the morning. Same thing goes for the night club. But it all depends on how the ship is set up.
I've never come across that at all. I have my boyfriend and his parents addicted to cruising. I've been on 4-5 is coming up and 6 will be next year in Hawaii!!
I've gone on a Royal Carribbean cruise 3 days (maybe 4) to the Bahamas. I LOVED it! I've been on maybe 3 or 4 cruises since then, and Jason and I really want to go on one together (I've only been with my dad when I was younger).
I highly reccomend them. Although I prefer the longer cruises because 3 days just doesn't seem like long enough. I prefered the Carnival cruises (more fun boat) over royal carribbean (older crowd, more mature, quieter... but the boat was nice), but I went on a Norwegian cruise, it was an older boat but the crowd (I was 15/16) was alot of fun, my dad really enjoyed it too (he was about 45 then).
My suggestion though is spring for a room with a window... It will make waking up MUCH easier (and more enjoyable), the inside cabins are very dark since there are no windows which makes it a slow going when you get up for your fun excursions (which are extra cost).
You can find some great prices through vacationstogo.com. I booked a cruise about a month ago for me, my boyfriend, and six of our friends. We did a lot of searching through VacationsToGo but for the sailing we finally settled on (a Norwegian Cruise Line cruise), we found it was actually cheaper to book through NCL.
@ cannotwait: what cruise line did you use? all cruises have food and drink (usually water/juice/tea sometimes even soda) included. Alcholic beverages and soda/specialty drinks are extra but you can purchase drink cards that can save you money, they are well worth it!
oh, when my dad booked we used www.cruisesonly.com call and talk to an actual agent, they are VERY helpful!
Oh yea, I should also mention I've been on two cruises before, one through Royal Carribbean and one through Norwegian, and they were both great. Really I think that the duration and ports are the biggest decision - are you just going to have a little getaway, hang out by the pool, etc, or are you going to visit new and unique locations? Keep in mind that a three night cruise will likely only have one day in port, where you can get off, visit a beach or do an "excursion," or activity.
The cruise we're going on in March is a 7 night cruise that goes to Honduras, Belize, Mexico, and the Bahamas, and we plan on going ziplining, cave tubing, ATV-ing, snorkeling, and of course, relaxing on the beach.
Also, I'm going to second (third? fourth?) the forums on cruisecritic.com. There are so many people will lots of great information.
I'm still in the cruise-planning mode, so if you have ANY questions about cruising in general, feel free to PM me! I'll be happy to answer any and all small or big questions.
Also, I've never had ANY problems with seasickness, as several people have previously mentioned. The ships are so big, you can barely feel any movement at all. You may feel a little movement as the ship departs its port, but your body quickly adapts.

Hi!
My sister is trying to plan a cruise for our immediate family to go on (in April) and found a great deal through hotwire.com for $197 per person for 3days to the Bahamas (flight not included). I thought I'd help out by asking my fellow bees for suggestions from those you have ever been a cruise before such as the do's and don't's...great deals, packages/flights and etc. Thanks so much and I look forward reading your comments and suggestions! Thanks in advance for all of your help!
