I live in NYC. The rain comes in bursts and goes away. They are summer thunderstorms.
You'll get a downpour for about an hour and then it will clear up again.
Just make sure you have umbrellas with you and if it starts to get REALLY humid and windy, scope out a place to duck into if the rain starts.
Yesterday it poured for about an hour in certain neighborhoods but not others. (i.e. it was dry at my office, but there were puddles at my apartment 40 blocks downtown)
I was there last July for a week in the city, and it didn't rain at all! Haha!
Hey, I live in nyc, so hopefully I can help! It has been extremely hot and humid here, and we've had some rain/thunderstorms here the past 3 days. Yesterday and the day before, we had short storms with very heavy rain in the afternoon, but the rest of the day was clear and sunny (just obnoxiously hot and humid). It rained for less than an hour each time.
Today, the sky looks cloudy, but hasn't rained yet to my knowledge. I doubt it will rain all day the whole weekend. We usually just get shorter, passing storms.
Hope you enjoy your trip! There are lots of great indoor sights to see too! :)
Typically, the humidity will build all day and it'll rain at some point between 3-6.
Just make sure you bring an umbrella and have an idea of indoor alternatives - there are some great museums! Heavy rain in the summer is likely to be for a relatively short period of time, but could come back later - it gets all its fury and energy out at once and then another storm cell can come along. In Philly (almost same weather as NYC) this week it's said thunderstorms every day and it is pouring with thunder and lightning right now - but I was able to go for lunch, no rain, and if I'm lucky it won't be raining when I go home.
Thank you so much for all your tips...I really appreciate it! if anyone else has more insight to offer...I would love to hear more!!
It can be unpredicatable.. I was in NYC last summer for a weekend with FI. It was very nice and hot on saturday and then sunday there was heavy thunderstorms and we couldnt do any of the outdoor stuff we had planned
It's raining right now, lol. It's been so humid and sticky here the past few days that I don't mind. But generally, as pps have said, it will rain for a few hours, and then clear up/stop. However, there have been days where it has just rained on and off non-stop; that's always a possibility! But if you're basing your concerns of a 15 day forecast, PLEASE DON"T WORRY! Those things are barely reliable three days out. Just make sure you bring umbrellas (don't buy them from vendors on the street, they're crappy quality) and if it does look like it's going to rain, wear shoes that you don't mind getting wet.
On accuweather, it looks like tomorrow and Sunday are actually supposed to be nice, which I think is a different forecast from what they had been predicting, so that goes to show you the extended forecast is always wrong.

Hi Bees - I wrote a similar post, but wanted a follow up. We are going to NY tomorrow and then to NYC the following week for just 3 days. The 15 day forecast shows all rain those 3 days! I know you cant trust the forecast that far out, but does anyone know how accurate the weather is out there?
When it says its going to rain, does it rain all day?? We had a lot of walking/sightseeing planned, but now the rain might ruin it :(
