I went in June and it was ridiculously hot.  Pretty much couldn’t be outdoors after 10am.

December would be a great time to go.

Visit the Alamo, walk along RiverWalk, take a RiverWalk boat ride.

@sunelake27:  Yes! I lived in San Antonio for my EMT-B in the Army. Make sure to get out to Cowboys dance hall, a blast and a half for sure! I met Rodney Atkins there before he ‘got big.’

Do the Riverwalk, go to Dicks for a fun dinner, take a boat ride- even if it is touristy, it’s a lot of fun. Visit the Alamo.

Where are you staying?

The Alamo, the river walk has awesome food and shopping, theres a lot of nice hotels on the river walk too. Whats your budget as far as the hotel? I can recomend hundreds I grew up there.

Oh, my favorite Hotel of them all (I had to stay in hotels on the weekend instead of going back to the barracks) was the Westin on the Riverwalk. The Marriot Riverwalk is right in the heart of the riverwalk and is a great choice as well.

December is beautiful, all the Christmas lights are up. One of my favorite times there.

Buckhorn Saloon is a hilarious redneck bar you should check out.

I live about an hour and a half from San Antonio. Been lots–you definitely have to go to the Alamo and the riverwalk like PPs said. Summer in Texas is brutal as expected. December just depends. It can be in the 70s or 30s. Seeing as you’re from Chicago, 30s with no snow is probably nothing ;). If you’re flexible I would recommend spring/fall better. But December will be great! You can eat great Mexican food right on the river and there are tons of fun stores and places to eat right there. If you can afford it, stay somewhere in that area. We’re going to do a weekend trip to San Antonio soon so I’m also commenting to follow!

@chic_and_fabulous:  Agreed, I love the Marriott Riverwalk.

Yes, Texas is great in December – it’s fairly warm (half of December it was in the 60s/70s here in Houston!)

Read this – Design Sponge’s guides are awesome. I still go back and read their guide to Houston every few months for ideas of new things to do; I never run out of ideas haha.

San Antonio is a lot more laid-back than Dallas, and even Houston – I think some of the most fun things to do there are wander around cool old historic neighborhoods (DH and I love looking at houses!) and having a beer at a neighborhood ice house.

This is my favorite little ice house, in the King William neighborhood (which is gorgeous):

Also, since you’ll be there in December, go to a Spurs game!

ETA: One more thing – if you’re a shopper, there’s some great outlets north of SA in San Marcos. We love to stop there on our way to SA, they have some great deals.
