Unfortunately, whether I get married or not won't have any effect on the legality of gay marriage. If I thought that refraining from marrying my fiance would suddenly legalize gay marriage, I'd be losing my venue deposits or just throwing an awesome ceremony-free party. To have an effect, go out and contact your political representatives, donate money to organizations that are fighting for gay marriage, or organize a protest and march on your city hall.
In regards to whether gay people should be allowed to marry - I realize that some people think it's a sin. However, last I checked, America has something called "separation of church and state". If a religion refuses to marry gay people or recognize their unions, that's its right. But the government should not discriminate against its citizens.
No because not getting married doesn't help achieve equal rights for everyone.
I think there are probably better ways to further the cause!
I don't feel guilty; I feel angry. If I believe that marriage is good and an institution I want to be a part of (I usually feel the latter ;), then I want everyone to have access to it (well, I want everyone to have access even if it's a bad institution, because I think it's discriminatory not to)... so why would I not participate myself? Then I hurt myself instead of helping anyone else.
its not my place to judge anyone, but i sure as heck wont not get married cuz some of my gay friends cant. i believe in everything the Bible has to say about anything related to that, but i am a strong believer in NOT judging ANYONE for anything they believe in or do! so to each their own!
@lilyfaith- for sure. It's really difficult to seperate a marriage from a union because in our society, we've really attached different meanings to the words. A "union" sounds so sterile and like it's just a legal arrangement; while I think a "marriage" should really just be a union inside of a religion, the word has really come to mean a sort of spiritual "soulmate" type connection between people and has all these traditions attached to it, and it would simply be invalid to say that a marriage and a union are the same thing.
