I’ve never done or seen Pilates before. But my YMCA has a class at 6:30 tonight, and I thought that I might try it. But I have no idea what to wear or what to expect.
I’m pretty fit, but I mostly run. I haven’t done much strength or other cardio lately.

I love pilates! and I love the classes they have at the Y because they aren’t super intense. The thing I love the most about pilates is that 1) I really feel the workout the following day and 2) Its hard but you switch it up enough throughout so you don’t get bored or overworked…. so like if you are doing crunches and just when it gets unbearable you switch to another excercise!

Pilates is amazing. What to expect depends on what kind of class it is. Some pilates classes ues chairs (aka machines) and others use a mat. It’s mostly core work. It’s definitely the kind of class where most people need ot go about 3 times before making a decision about whether they like it because the first time can be overwhelming if you aren’t familiar with the type of exercises being done, especially when a chair is involved.

I love love Pilates. It’s my work out of choice. Wear something form fitting so your movements aren’t restricted.
Personally, I prefer it much more than yoga. I actually feel like I’m getting stronger with each pose and stretch.

I love Pilates because most of the workouts help strengthen you using your own body weight. The Pilates instructor of the class I used to take would sometimes used 5 lb weights but nothing heavier.

Another pilates lover here. I love how I feel so limber after a workout. It was hard for me to get into it because I was so out of shape, but you really end up amazing yourself when you stick with it.
There are a couple of studios that have drop-in classes around me, but I’m good about keeping up with my routine at home. I swear by blogilates.com, that woman is insane, but the workouts are doing wonders for me!

I love PopPilates! She’s the reason I started doing Pilates in the first place! I still don’t see how she just chatters away while doing the moves. I’m struggling to survive and she’s talking like she’s standing there face to face with you. She has GREAT recipes too.
EDIT: I failed to mention that PopPilates is what the Blogilates instructor Cassey calls her workouts.

i love pilates. i definitely feel like it’s a great base for the rest of my workouts for the week (i try to do 1 cardio, 1 pilates, 1 weights and 1 distance [running, bike or walking]).
it’s not common in australia, but my gym is very pilates focussed and they have the reformer machines, and they do a couple of other pilates styles (matwork, power pilates, small apparatus [the bands and blocks and balls etc])

I swear by pilates, it’s the best!

i love pilates!! i started doing the reformer back in june and i dropped from a 14 to a 12 within a week. the weight loss slowed after that but i still got down to a 10/12. it’s the best workout i’ve ever had and it’s the only thing i’ve ever stuck with. i highly recommend it!!

@mrstilly: So, how was it?
I do reformer pilates at least twice a week. I started doing it in addition to barre classes for physical therapy and now workout at a place that offers both.
My legs were pretty sculpted before but I can tell they’re even leaner now. Abs are indeed intense, and I lack strength in my back- so it’s helping strengthen it!
