I've been thinking about it, but Mr. T makes it sooooo hard to avoid bad carbs. Like, impossible. It's all he eats! lol Lots of friends have had success with SB though!
I was on South Beach phase 1 for a week. I did lose 8 lbs. during that week. The first few days I didn't feel that bad and was elated with the rapid weight loss. But then I started getting light-headed during aerobics and other activities - my blood sugar levels were too low! Plus I am not that big of a veggie person and I just couldn't get 4 cups of veggies into me per day! I am now kinda doing my own version of the Carb-lovers diet. Trying to keep my carb intake low and only eating good carbs - whole or multi-grain products. Ultimately losing weight boils down to eating less and exercising more.
I did it for a while. I lost 7 lbs, but I was feeling too week. I only eat whole grains/wheat in moderation now and I am still losing a little bit at a time. I am content with that because I was already at a weight that was considered healthy for my height, and near my goal weight.
It is possible that you both were not feeling well during Phase 1 because you weren't consuming enough carbs, you have to make sure to eat beans/ legumes and drinking V8 helps also.
I like South Beach because eventually you do end up eating breads, oatmeals - starches in general. It works for me. It is the only diet I could stick to and was successful on (temporarily) now it is really all I know to do to lose some weight.
It definitely isn't for everyone though.... finding what works for you is key. Very cool that you 2 are happy with your plans!
@Soon2bBB: I was eating beans everyday, but it probably didn't help that I was in 90+ degree weather at the time (I was in phase one during July).
Trugem - I know what you mean! Yesterday was only day 2 of phase 1 (body hasn't even adjusted to diet yet) and it was so hot that I rally had to push myself through my workout, did feel a little weak but I know it does end with Phase 2 so I am keepin' on! Wish me luck, gonna be hot again today, eeeeeeek!
i did it about a year ago and i got really, really weak. however, i did lose about 7lbs in 9 days and i felt thinner, but i was on the stairs one day at the gym and about lost it and fell off, i dont think it is a healthy or reasonable diet at all. Consider weight watchers...
alishadhs4 - Diets are so different for different people, the key is finding what works for you.
IMO, South Beach is definitely a healthy diet, you eat veggies, lean meat, whole grains (after phase 1), fruit and good fats. I don't know of a healthier diet that keeps you as full as SBD. I am sure that most doctors will approve of SBD.
On Weight Watchers they give you point systems for McDonalds?!?!?!? Sorry, to each his own, but that doesn't sound healthy to me, plus when I tried it I was always hungry.
Phase 1 of SBD is the hardest, ONLY LASTING 2 WEEKS, doctors may not generally apporve with that particular phase but the point of phase 1 is to get rid of carb cravings. In the book it says you can choose not to do Phase 1 if you have less than 15lbs to lose.
Also, it says in the book to take it easy on exercise while on Phase 1, maybe you pushed yourself too hard?
I have done South Beach before, after getting to my goal I went to the doctor to get a complete physical (blood work-up and everything) and she said I was in tip-top shape.
Like I said, to each his own... but I personally have not found as healthy a diet that keeps me full all day long.
