I'm definitely considering it because I am terrified of the geisha/hooker look! I once went to the MAC counter looking for a good foundation match and I swear I came out looking like a drag queen. I don't know what foundations are good for photography but I do know that mineral foundations make your face shine like a beacon!
I really wanted a professional makeup artist but it wasn't in the budget. I ended up putting my makeup on myself in LITERALLY six minutes. I ran out of time because I drastically changed my hair plans (including directing the stylist to hack off about 4 inches and put in layers) four hours before my wedding. I think it turned out ok, though. I'm sure a pro could have done a much better job, but so far I'm not minding it in the pics that have come out. I did "practice" a little beforehand, though, and took some pictures to give myself some idea of what it might look like. But still, had I had the money, I totally would have gone with a pro!
This is another of those things that I'm feeling pressured into getting, even though I don't think it's that important. I think my mom said something like "you need professional makeup done, otherwise you'll just look like yourself" ??
I'm really hoping she didn't mean it that way...
I just don't want to look at pictures of our wedding day and think "Hey, her makeup looks great. Who is she?"
Meeee! I'm doing my makeup. Honestly anyone can do a good job doing their own make-up. It just takes time and practice. Start doing your make-up everyday, watch youtube tutorials, go to MAC or one like it and get them to show you step-by-step application. They do one eye, you do the other...it's really not hard. Take it from someone that never wore makeup and within months was a legit makeup artist.
When my MOH got married she insisted on doing her own makeup and we thought she was NUTS!
About 6 weeks before her wedding, she went to the Clinique counter and said, "i'm going to buy all my makeup from you, create a wedding look," and the girl did just that. My MOH then re-did the makeup (took pics to remember) several times before the big day and she looked GREAT!
I would suggest that if your photographer isn't the greatest, to possibly get it professionally done. While my MOH's makeup looked beautiful in person, her photos (done by an amateur) made her look, blah.
I'm doing my own make up for the wedding but only because of budget constraints. I just bought new foundation by Dermablend to try. It is medium coverage and hides redness and blemishes very well. Plus, when you use it along with their setting powder, it's supposed to last about 16 hours. So far so good. I haven't tried taking any pictures with it on yet to see how it comes out in photos.
Definitely learning lots of nice tips from youtube videos and make up blogs. Some of the tricks that I've read about and might follow are:
Long-lasting lipstick (like Maybelline Superstay)- no lipstick smudges on the groom!
Matte eyeshadows (shimmery colors and glitter can give off a weird glow around the eyes)
Also, I'm staying away from using too much SPF on the big day because it supposedly gives your face a bright white glow.
Topping it all off with a pair of false lashes to help make my eyes pop =)
I'm doing my own makeup. I have practiced for months. I did my sister's makeup for her wedding so I think I can manage my own.
I'm still undecided... I was a bridesmaid at a wedding a couple of years ago and the bride hired a makeup artist. I was really really happy with my makeup! But my MOH (and only bridesmaid) isn't really all that into makeup. And my Mom does a really good job of her own makeup as well... so I think we may just go to Sephora or MAC and get a makeover then recreate the look on the wedding day.
@coffeemochi: I highly recommend the temptu airbrush system from sephora :) i bought it, did my own makeup when I was a bridesmaid for my friend's wedding. it turned our really well. I hired a makeup artist to do my wedding and in retrospect, I could have temptu-ed myself. :(
Although you might be worried about MAC make up artists, I think their products are designed for professional use and photography.
@miak1580
I do love the product, the but muas there are hit or miss.
Usually miss..
I will be doing my own hair & makeup :)
I have tried several times with a makeup artist & my eyes would like like looking like panada eyes...not impressed! I am not a makeup artist myself, but I wear makeup daily & I will be trialing a few different looks & start practicing with it. I am choosing to do it myself because I know what colors works best for me :) and saves me $ as well. I also didn't want to end up looking outrageously different to what I usually look like in photos cos I know I will regret it in the future. I did my sister's makeup for her engagement & wedding :) She loved it! ^^
I found my Guerlain Gold shows up looking very natural & dewy on photos, but my problem with it is that it looks a little pinky on my yellow undertone skin. I have decided to give Clarins Extra Firming foundation a try& so far I like it :)
Like another fellow bee advised, foundations with SPF will make you look a little washed out, so avoid it if you can!
If you do decide to go with a makeup artist, make sure you trial it first! :)
I'm considering doing it myself...Youtube videos! With lots of practice! :) My friend recently bought the temptu airbrush system from Sephora so we're gonna try it out, she's getting married a couple months before me so we'll see how it works out. But yea, the couple times I have gotten professional make up done, I just felt like drag queen or hooker and not even like myself! I just want a more glamorous version of myself, not transformed to a completely different person!
I didn't plan on it, but the makeup people that came to do ours were HORRIBLE. I ended up wiping it off and doing my own; and actually loved how it came out. It was much more 'me' than the pros' style. I had bought some nice makeup before the wedding in case this happened which was a good call. There are some great tutorials on YouTube, and by Ms. Rainbow (I think?) as well!
Like someone else recommended, I purchased the Temptu system (not the pro one though but the "everday consumer" version) for my foundation, blush/bronzer, and highlighter and I will be using that for the wedding. I've also been using it everyday and love it. My skin is acne scarred from years and years of breakouts and I have enlarged pores. although there's nothing I can do about my enlarged pores, the foundation does a really good job at coverage without looking caky at all. So far, pictures I've taken with it on makes me look nearly flawless. I even have it on when I work out at the gym and it stays on my face. I really can't recommend it enough. As for my eye make-up, I'm having a friend who's an MUA do it. She's really good at blending and making your eyes pop. Plus, I don't have enough practice putting on my own fake lashes. I'm good at putting it on other people but suck when i'm doing it on myself!

Sorry, there are no users yet.
My wedding day is about..4 months away now and I am still putting serious thoughts on doing my own makeup.
I do not consider myself a makeup novice but I am nowhere close to being a professional.. but every consultation I have had had me walk away looking like a geisha or a cheap Asian hooker. Ugh..
My biggest concern right now is foundation.. I am probably going to use Makeup Forever HD foundation but it is extremely sheer. It's great because it gives me room to build but I just wonder if there are other foundation out there that you woudl recommend for photography.
So far I have heard that Armani and Laura Mercier are also great for photography.
Any other advice would be great! Thanks!
