Yes! We are doing this. My fiance is from the South and it is the tradition. It is perfect for our full Catholic mass at 7 p.m. followed by a cocktail reception. I thought it was a little formal at first until I saw it in person. And it means a lot to my fiance and her family.
I don't have any pictures on my computer, but I'll hijack some off my fiance's when I'm over at his apartment and post this weekend. I do have pictures of my fiance and I as guests at a black tie preferred. Down South, most of my fiance's family and friends wear tuxes. Here in DC, that is pretty typical too, but only a few of my relatives own tuxes and will probably wear suits. A lot of my male relatives are lawyers so they have pretty sweet custom suits which look nicer than most tuxes in my opinion.
My fiance is "Society South" so he actually owns one and most of our guys do too but some of the groomsmen (like my little brother) are renting. They are the same price as regular tuxes.
@MissPolitico, thank you! It'd be great to see whatever you have. This is one of the few photos I found that show a leaner profile versus the squat diplomat type. (Photo from inspiredgoodness.com)
my groom is wearing a white tie (not a bowtie) and a white vest, but just a regular black tux, not one with long tails. He is renting it from men's warehouse. then groomsmen are renting tuxes with silver vests and ties.
I love it. I can't say that I've been to such a formal wedding, though. In CA, if you tell people a wedding is "formal" or "black tie optional," women will still show up in cocktail dresses. ;)
This is our cousin - he did a white shirt/white tie with a regular tux. I think we're doing the same on my FI, with the GM in our kiwi green. It's a really clean elegant look.

I'm toying with the idea of dressing the groom in white tie, with the wedding at large being black tie preferred. I'm having trouble finding any inspiration photos though that aren't totally cheezy catalogue pics - anyone have any pictures of real weddings with white tie grooms?
And if you did do white tie, did you buy a tailcoat or rent?
