I'm so excited!  We just booked our honeymoon!  I kept telling DH that Id be happy spending $800 for a 2 star resort, because Ive never been on a tropical vacation as an adult, and would just be happy to so SOMEWHERE (Went with my parents numerous times as a child/teen).  THEN, I found this place, and the budget was out.the.window.

http://www.secretsresorts.com/silversands/  If you have a minute, check out the virtual tour under "explore".  The place is insanely gorgeous.

Have any of you been to this Secrets, or any of the others?

OMG... I was JUST going to post about "Secrets" -- we were drooling over "Capri Riviera Cancun" last night, not thinking we could afford an all-inclusive, but realizing that maybe we can make it happen after seeing these resorts.  CONGRATS, it looks awesome!

So, I had the same question -- anyone else book Secrets -- thoughts??

@HummusGal:  Have you looked them up on Tripadvisor?  I had never used that site before, but it's super helpful.  Not only are there hundreds of reviews dating back to pretty much the opening date of the resorts, but there are tons of pics posted by people who have stayed there (pics of stuff they don't show on they website).  Also, Silversands has a live webcam... I don't know about Capri though.

@MissNoodles:  I will definitely check out TripAdvisor!  We looked at ALL of the secrets resorts today and Capri and Silversands seem to be the best value for a 5 night stay!  How long are you going????  Did you book a flight through the resort as well?  They both look SO nice!  And adults only, all-inclusive.. how can you go wrong when most of the reviews are great!  I'd be interested to her from you after the honeymoon, we're not too far behind ya in early October... hope the weather is great!

@HummusGal:  We booked through a travel agent, a package from a Canadian airline's charter travel division (WestJet is the name of the airline).  I originally found the resort from either expedia or travelocity (can't remember which) and then I looked them up on the travel agen't site to see what exclusives (if any) they had.  Turns out they had a cheaper flight, combined with a better (more expensive room) and for 7 nights instead of 5.  It ended up being about $80.00 more than the 5 night package, so we were reall happy with it.

Will definitely update when we get back!  OH, and check out the virtual tour under the "explore" section of their website, in addition to the pics on TA.

@MissNoodles:  Awesome thanks!  I seem to be just one step behind ya in my research... :) I just emailed a travel agent not too long ago, waiting to hear back about what they'd be able to do for us as far as a quote goes... sounds like you got a GREAT DEAL!!!  And 2 more nights... I hope we get lucky too!  So exciting!!  Thanks for the suggestions, will keep ya posted :)

We went there for our honeymoon back in 2010 and had a great time.

You can check out my thread about it here.

    http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/our-amazing-honeymoon-to-cancun-secrets-silversands

I knew before I got there that this was not a 5 star resort. We could not afford a 5 star resort. I've never been to an all inclusive resort before so my expectations weren't that high. My husband has been to one in Jamaica.  He thought Silversands was great!  For the price, I would definitely go back to Silversands.

Like I said, if you are expecting a 5 star resort, you will probably be disappointed.  I expected a 4 star resort so I was very happy with our honeymoon. Also, we wanted to go to an adult only resort. So Silversands worked with our budget and our requirements. (adult only, all inclusive, out of the country, 7 days, Under $2500)

If I could do my trip again, I would definitey go back to Selvatica for ziplining!  LOTS of FUN!

The second excursion to Tulum was fun, too! It included ziplining activity, too.

Also, it rained for the first 3 days.  We pretty much stayed in our hotel room. I wish I would have gone down to the lobby because they had indoor activities.  We were bummed out because of the rain. Also, if there are forecast of rain, I would immediately go to the excursion desk and book an excursion. We didn't do it the first 3 days because we thought it was raining everywhere. Well, we were wrong. On day 3 of the rain, we book a trip to Tulum. Which is about an hour south of the resort. The weather was perfect. Just because it's raining on the resort, doesn't mean it's raining everywhere else.

When you get to the resort, they tell you to stop by the excursion.  Don't wait like we did.  You usually can't book excursions on the same day.  So you have plan in advance or sign up for trips as soon as you get there.  Selvatica tours has a website that you can prebook your tour. I would do this if you plan on going on an excursion in the first couple days of your trip.

Now I'm not saying that you won't have fun at the resort.  You will. With the beautiful pools, the activities, the food, the beach and the bars, you'll be busy. But if you want to explore Mexico, try an excursion.

Oh, definitely check out tripadvisor.com. Some reviews you have to take with a grain of salt because negative people will always leave negative reviews. Like I said, I knew what to expect.

We just booked our honeymoon at Secrets Capri through cheapcarribean.com- I am SO excited. All of the reviews we read (expedia, tripadvisor, other random sites) all were very good. The only negatives we came across are ones we don't mind:

    • some people complained the food wasn't out of this world like they were expecting. I would never expect world class cuisine at any resort or a hotel (I guess I am an urban food snob), so all I care about is that it is unlimited food and booze. As long as the food isn't awful, I can deal.
    • others complained (specifically about Capri) that the beach was destroyed by the hurricane this year. Looking at pictures they posted, it isn't that bad.
    • Overall, it looks like the people who had negatives to say were, like yrret107 said, having unrealistic expectations.

@yrret107:  Thanks so much for sharing the info and that honeymoon thread, your pics are so great... both the professional ones AND the trip candids :)  Appreciate all of the advice... I bet it applies to both Capri and Silversands, we're still going back and forth between the two, haha  Excited to learn more about excursions... my fiance is geeked about potentially seeing the ruins and ziplining :)

@reginaphalange:  Yay!  What made you choose Capri, just out of curiosity (since I'm still debating between that and Silversands).  I totally 100% agree with you by the way... as long as the food's not terrible and the let us eat whenever and drink whenever, we're good. haha  Negative reviews are good to see, but usually those are the people who aren't ever happy with anything!

@HummusGal:  The main reason we chose Capri was because of the deal we saw on cheapcarribean. (We didn't see any other Secrets deals). I also think I read in a few reviews that Silversands doesn't have as large of a beach as Capri.

@reginaphalange:  Sweet, thanks!  I totally checked cheapcarribean and thought the price wasn't much better... I need to look again I think :)  Can't wait to hear about your 'moon, it's SOON!!!

    LRCWedding    August 3, 2012

We are going to Secrets Maroma in August!!! We booked in October- literately the first day you were allowed (333 days in advance.) The travel agency we booked with is the top travel agency in Ohio for sending people to Mexico and the Carribean islands. There are 2 women that work in there, they are sisters and the owner is one of my good friends' mother in law. We went to her not knowing she even knew my friend. Well her son and daughter went to Secrets Silversands last June. They had a pretty good time... I know they are "working" on the beach now. when they went last summer, you couldn't even swim in it. If you look at their pics, it looks like lake water-not ocean. This has been the main complaint of people on Facebook and tripadvisor from what I saw. Other than that they had a good time. I did see Capri is supposed to have a better beach than Silversands too!

We knew we wanted an all inclusive, adults only. FI nor I have ever been: on a plane or out of the country or to an all inclusive, or on a trip by ourselves. So this was a HUGE deal for us. We picked out resorts we liked the best and it took us about 3 months deciding on a resort. I literately figured out the % that each resort scored on tripadvisor for very good and excellent ratings. We are also getting married on the beach at the resort. It will be jus the 2 of us, but Secrets offers a free wedding package for when you stay in a certain suite for 7 nights (lowest level suite-cheapest room they have). So Secrets Maroma scored the highest. It was only about $900 difference. Which is a LOT for us, especially with a toddler. But we knew no other resort offered the beach and the luxury they do.  We wanted quiet, the best beach, shopping close by, great snorkeling (mandatory) unlimited food and drinks (we joke that my FI is a fat guy trapped in a skinny guys body lol). We really went to the travel agent wanting to go to Sandals. But after many reviews and advice from a travel agent Secrets is giving Sandals a run for their money. We have an almost 3 year old and not only is this our wedding ceremony, but this is also probably the last time we will take a trip alone until after she graduates.

So we knew this was THE chance to do it. People that have nothing else to compare it to, seem to really like Capri. I know it is a very good value for your money!! It is literately half the price our trip is (or was in Oct). In Oct- Capri was about $2k for both of us, Silversands was about $3k and ours was $4k...

Youtube also has tons of videos of the resort that people shot. Sorry for the lengthy-ness. Just thought I would share what I have found in the TON of research I've done... I'm a worry wart lol!
