I fell for a dress online that was unlike any other dress I'd seen. After researching the designer (Sue Wong), I learned that the general consensus is that she really knows how to design to flatter a woman's body and people who buy her dresses tend to be extremely satisfied.

Since no stores nearby carry Sue Wong, I took the plunge and placed an order online (after taking my measurements and talking with an extremely kind and helpful customer service rep at Unique Vintage).

I'm super excited, but also super nervous since I'm usually so picky and I haven't even tried this dress on! Somehow I feel like it'll work out, though...

Anyone else buy a dress online that they never tried on? How'd it work out?

I have ordered mine without trying it on, but I have tried on similar styles so I am hoping it will be flattering. If you have a good figure and/or know what suits you I think you should be ok. I am plus sized and I learned what shapes suited me and then looked at those style dresses til I fell in love :)

ETA: do they allow returns just in case its too big or small?

@ShellVee: I hope it works out for you!

I generally know what works for me, but I rarely buy form-fitting dresses, let along full-length or beaded...

    - I'm nervous about the fit. I usually wear between sizes 4-6 (more 6) but the size chart suggested I order 8. People say Sue Wong dresses run true to size, but I'm not sure what that would be in my case! I ordered a 6.

    - I'm also a bit worried that I may dislike the beading (I'm not a huge fan of beading). It looks pretty subtle, though, which is good.

Despite these things, I still feel super positive. I have a good feeling about this dress, so hoping that's a good sign!

I went shopping for dresses, but the pressure and the price was getting me down so I turned to the internet. I have ordered a dress of DH Gate, a site for wholesale shopping (for stores etc). My seller is called Kiss Bridal and I am waiting for my dress to be shipped (maybe today or tomorrow). I really hope I will like it and won't have to get it altered much, but the very low price makes other changes not such a big deal. I paid about 140 US, which is cheaper in Euros (I'm in France). I am a 24 y old, street size 2, and 5f5 with a very small bust, so I hope and think this dress will be good...do you like? Oh and I asked for floor length, no train.

BTW I really like your Sue Wong, it's retro!

I couldn't vote because I have ordered my dress without seeing it, but I haven't received it yet. Hopefully it will work out lol. I like the dress you chose, it looks like it would go great with what you described.

@JoBoom: I love chiffon and rouching on the torso. And that's an amazing price! I paid $550 including shipping - a little more than I wanted to spend for online, but less than I'd likely have to pay if I went dress shopping in-person.

@Millia: Wow - I've never heard of that before! I'll have to check out that site if this one doesn't work out! This dress was actually in my list of top picks! Please post pictures when you receive it!

@DeadUtopia:  I hope it works out for you! Post pics when you get it!

@Anastasia Lelikova: You look beautiful! (Is that you or the model?) And I love the way they packaged it - that's so sweet and what a nice personal touch!

@lumos: I bought a JCrew Sophia gown.  I already owned FIVE of the JCrew Sophia dress (a popular bridesmaid dress), so I assumed the gown would be great.  The gown fit totally different in the same size.  It was bigger, made for a C Cup (all the dresses are like for A cups).  Two feet too long.

Then I went to a bridal shop to try on dreses for fun.  I think I'm going to stick with just getting the dress at a shop and trying it on in person.

I think if one found the exact dress/size you just tried on in person, but online used - then that can be considered.

My mistakes could get costly (not to mention I don't know what the heck I'm doing!) so I better just do it right this time!

I ordered my dress online. I actually bought a chinese replica (Oh lord, I know.) It worked out great though. The dress was beautiful and it fit true to the measurements I gave them. I just winged it though (I saw a dress that was pretty & ordered it), so it probably wasn't the best idea even though I did get lucky.

Your dress is beautiful & I'm sure it will look great on you! Good luck!

Hi! I also just ordered my dress without trying it on first. I did have the oppertunity to see it in person first tho, but it was a size 4 and I need a 10 in Allure so I didn't even attempt to put it on. I called every bridal store within a 5 hour drive time to see if anyone had it in a size large enough for me to try on and NOBODY had this dress. I emailed Allure asking if they could tell me if any stores had what I was looking for but no such luck. I ended up just ordering it at a bridal salon (not the one I saw it at because they quoted me at a higher price). I paid the rush fee and it is supposed to be here by the end of Feb. The one thing that eased my mind is I was able to try on a very simular Allure dress. The one thing that still worries me is the 60% non-refundable deposit I had to put down, and the fact that once it does arrive if I hate it or it doesn't fit I won't have time to find something else before my wedding in April. Let me know how yours turns out!

Here are the pictures of my dress Allure P890 (i'm gonna take off the fugly floral strap tho)

Yep, ordered a replica from China online and I LOVE the pics they sent me last night...I didn't vote in the poll because I haven't gotten the dress to see for real what it looks like on but I am loving what I see at this point. I forgot to say how I LOVE your dress, but you know that from the other post. I am glad you found her!!!

I did!  I ordered a short wedding dress from Dolly Couture.  They have a showroom in the LA area, but I ordered without seeing the dress in person or trying it on.  I talked with them about how I wanted the dress modified, gave them all of my measurements, and a couple of months later my dress arrived.  It was perfect.  Exactly what I wanted, and couldn't find elsewhere.  It was definitely a big leap ordering without trying on, but I'm so glad I did.  I couldn't imagine having a different dress, and there's no way I could have found something similiar that I could have tried on first.

@Collcoll: So glad it worked out for you! I'd love to see pictures!

@sienna76: That's strange about the different fit. Bummer! I suppose after an experience like that I'd be inclined to try things on first as well. You'll find something you love :)

@futureMrsMason:  I kind of winged it too! I saw it one night and really liked it, and there was a *fantastic* sale on so I ordered it that night. Unfortunately the company (Couture Candy) then e-mailed me a week later to tell me it was actually out of stock, but I couldn't stop thinking about it and custom-ordered it from Unique Vintage. Glad you're happy with your purchase!

@texmax: I hated that no stores had the dresses I was interested in when I was at the start of my search. I hope it works out for you, considering the 60% non-refundable thing - good thing you've at least tried on a similar dress! The one you chose is beautiful.

@BodyByViGirl: That's great that they sent you pictures you love! I'm excited for it to arrive for you! Thank you for the super nice compliments on my dress!

@simplifiedbride:  I've come across Dolly Couture in my search - their shop and dresses look super cute! Your dress was perfect for you - you look beautiful! I find short dresses make brides look cute as a button and you're no exception to that! :)

I think I'll add another option to the survey - Bees who have ordered but are still waiting for their dress to arrive. If you're one of those bees but have already posted, feel free to also contribute to the survey so others can check out the stats!

I did and it worked out great!  I knew exactly what I wanted, but the dress was from Mori Lee's spring line--nothing available to try on yet.  I tried on dresses that had similar characteristics from the same line so that I could at least get an idea of the size, etc.  It fits perfectly except for the length and will need to take in the bolero jacket a bit.  I LOVE IT!

I never would because the dresses I thought I liked didn't look good on me when I tried them on. I think it's too risky.

@goldendreams: Thank you! Yes ma'am - their customer service was amazing (both e-mail and phone), and I appreciated the video on their website that showed who many of them working there are and what their facilities look like. It's also a funny spoof of Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" and I liked how equity-minded they were so I felt good about buying from them.

@QBbride: I appreciate your honesty. I felt the same way and was actually quite surprised by my choice to buy online!

@Mrs. LB:  I'm excited to see how it turns out!

If you're wanting to buy a gown online, another good place you can try is www.dream-wedding-dresses.com.  They specialize in custom made dresses. I've reommended a few people to them and each gown has turned out amazing. So, if you don't find what you want on the website your looking at, just find a pic of the dress you want and send it to them. They'll give you a quote and even make any changes you need. they only use high quality fabrics so you don't need to worry about getting a cheap looking dress.

@roxygirl: Thanks for the suggestion :) I wish custom sites like these had more photos of the replica dresses they make rather than just copying and pasting pictures from designer websites.- I'd find it more trustworthy if they showed me their actual work on their sites.

    Did you order from them?
