I just bought the newest The Knot Ultimate Wedding Guide Ohio Edition and I was reading one article where they suggest that brides hire an experienced lighting coordinator for their wedding. They say this is a must and that you should not just try to do this on your own. Then they say that if you're not going to splurge just go for the "inexpensive" basics which are "only" two or three THOUSAND dollars! Are you kidding me???
@callirome: I read the knot when I feel like giving up on wedding planning. I read it and I instantly think, "you know what? I can do that. For waaaaay less than that too. I'll show them". But to actually get advice from there...oh, no, no, no. lol
@sdrury89: Right! I can barely read their magazine through the blur of adveritisments, but it does have some good ideas, I just immediatly get on Wedding Bee and see how the Bees can do it better and for cheaper, lol.
@callirome: haha yeah! I really only look at it for the pictures/inspiration. I hate reading those articles, because honestly, they have a 2-3 month supply of articles, then they reword a couple things and print the saaame thing again. I will say, they have a pretty awesome checklist online. That's the only good thing I have to say about theknot though. lol
Sorry in advance to anyone who legitimately bought this dress, but The Knot lost me when they put this issue out with this look being on the cover of "The Fashion Issue". I lost all faith in The Knot, and almost with humanity in general. This dress/hair/look is the antithesis of what my wedding is about so why would I take their advice? Yow.

@sdrury89: Right, I have a Knot account specifically so I can use their checklist, and not really much else. Everytime I get on there I'm like, Holy Crap I will never be able to pay for a wedding! And then I get on here and go, Okay, this will be okay.
: O
I think my FH would just walk out of the church if I showed up wearing that. No words necessary. "You are too stupid for me to marry."
@KristenGotMarried: I actually thought the same thing! That dress is just... well, it's that dress! lol.
@KristenGotMarried: FI saw that and got this serious look of terror on his face and said (and I quote), "please, tell me your dress doesn't look like this. At all. The only similarity better be that it's white" lol
@callirome: haha exactly. I just printed the checklist so now I really don't ever get on there.
Omg I sae that and was just like really??? The knot is rediculous I used to get the mags and go to the site and stopped... Its not helpful it just tells you that you need things you really dont.. I get so frustrated.. I just use it for the checklist and count down now.. I love that the bees are sane!! :)
I sent a picture of it to two of my future bridesmaids, and my fiance... obviously as a joke. One of my bridesmaids actually believed I was wearing it and said "congrats!" ? She later then admitted she was perplexed but trying to be supportive. The others laughed hysterically.
The Knot ought to be ashamed of themselves for putting this cover out. It's ridiculous to the tenth degree and it burns my retinas.
@organizedbride11: I feel bad for brides who find that site and not this one. The ladies here are so warm and supportive where as there it's just like, "No! You can't possibly do THAT! What are you thinking?!"
I've been a wedding planner/coordinator for years... the site is awesome for photos - they have so many more than any other site out there, but the boards there are very catty. The magazine is best left to those looking for broad inspiration.
@thewheelsonthebus: I agree, the pictures are amazing, but sometimes they're totally unattainable unless you have a crazy high budget.
I was just on theknot.com trying to help a friend find a venue for 300+ people in Napa, and I gave up. The website is so horrible. What am I supposed to assume that $$$ means?
I forgot about how frustrating wedding planning is when you're trying to do it the 'normal' way!
@thewheelsonthebus: I'm glad someone who works in the wedding business feels this way. It's encouraging to see that The Knot's way is NOT the only way.
I've never even attempted to navigate the boards there because that whole website is just so unintuitive to me.
@napabridekelsey: Haha, I couldn't agree more, I tried to narrow dress searches to see something more along the styles I have been looking for and gave up half way through. Even things I thought would be in my budget were outrageously over priced! It was insane.
@callirome: not to mention their 'Hot New Color Schemes' are all the same. Get some creativity!
I'm not a Knot fan, but they do have an excellent point about not trying to DIY lighting. It's a really bad idea. Hot bulbs plus lots of extension cords plus overloading your venues electrical capacity = disaster. That's pretty much the only thing I would absolutely recommend not DIY.
But, obviously, lighting isn't necessary, and you shouldn't need to spend $2000-3000 unless you're getting custom gobos and going nuts. I got married at a contemporary art museum and had extensive uplighting and it only cost about $1000.
@napabridekelsey: Right! I'm so tired of seeing the same peach/pink/red color blur. I LOVE interesting colors (still debating mine, but the SO isn't so into the idea of chaning what he likes, lol) and I'm SO tired of seeing the same exact colors.
Glad some other Bees are outraged at the crazy advice and ridiculous amounts of money other places are saying brides have to pay!
I have posted a few things on the local boards on the knot...but other than that, I steer clear. It is really catty! I've never read the knot's wedding advice and I'll definitely steer clear now. :)
p.s. not to threadjack...but what IS uplighting? I keep seeing the word and am still dumbfounded! *hangs head in shame*
Aw, it's okay FMMcD! Uplighting is when lighting is installed in a venue to change the color. It's usually from the ground and shining up, therefore 'uplighting' the space. Its usually used on walls/columns/fancy ceiling installations, but can also be used on tables (like cake table) or even in centerpieces.
Example:

@KristenGotMarried: swwoooonnn...
I hate the Knot. i quit their boards and came here. Too mean & nasty over there for my blood!
My ENTIRE wedding costs $3000. My lighting is about 50 boxes of the large bulbs Christmas lights that I bought for 70% off the day after Christmas. I'm going to string them from the trees to create a roof of twinkling lights. All for about $100. So there, evil knot! :)
(I have a thing against them... that's actually what drove me here. The girls on the Knot were so mean to me when they found out I was 20 that they completely attacked me and I ran away to the nice bees.)
@KristenGotMarried: Wow. That dress is something else. Thanks for giving me my first laugh of the day.
Wow the knot Pennsylvania / Delaware said the exact same thing about lighting! I almost started crying cause that's over half our budget... We just can't afford lighting... I hope it really doesn't make or break the reception hall.
I have that spring season guide too... thought it would be helpful since it was soooo thick... nope just lots of ads... Good for cutting up and making collages when I'm sick of wedding planning though.
I agree with PPs I use theknot.com for the countdown and checklist... I prefer the bee.
I also find the knot's site VERY non-user friendly- totally counter-intuitive, as one bee said above.
The only thing I use the knot for is picture inspiration!
I dislike the Knot for a few different reasons. I actually think there are about 5 people who work for them and their entire job is to take whatever articles that they put out last month, and change a few things. They act like everyone is a mulit-millionaire, and frankly a lot of the things they promote are downright hideous (please see above for magazine cover featuring "the dress".) I have never posted on the boards but it seems like they are always missing something. When you first get engaged you're so excited to register for the knot.com and you're sure this will be your bible. But it's more like an empty box covered in really pretty wrapping paper.
I can't hate on the Knot, because they featured my wedding in the Texas magazine earlier this year and it was the coolest thing evarrr to me! I was so surprised. I avoid the knot message boards though, lots of rude people that hated things like the terrible etiquette of people BRINGING gifts to weddings. Who knew that was bad etiquette? Not me! I love the wedding bee because y'all are so supportive.
I do have to say that I wished I had spent more $ on lighting. It was pretty, but the room was darker than I'd hoped for our morning wedding, despite the lighting we had and votive candles. And the venue did advise me to have more lighting--I just didn't want to pay for it. I think i could have saved in another area, perhaps, and the lighting would have been really cool.
In the end I got married just fine, but professional lighting is a good idea if you can afford it! NOT sure you need an additional lighting coordinator, but if your venue doesnt have any kind of experienced people, I could see that.
I don't think that The Knot really has a brides best interest at heart. They are about their vendors and whatever they need to do to make money. I came across getmarried.com recently, and really like that site and I ordered their magazine and I love that too! Much better. I also like Martha Stewarts wedding site and magazine. I like all the DIY ideas on their and it just seems to be easier to navigate. of course my favorite of the wedding sites, other than wedding bee, is offbeatbride.com and brokeassbride.com those both seem to fit me perfectly.
@SandyThePoet: I also like the martha stewart site and magazine AND inside weddings had the most beautiful inspiration pics from real weddings i had ever seen! those pictures really helped me help my florists understand what i was looking for.
I like the inspiration photos and guides on the website. I haven't experienced the boards long enough to call anyone catty (and I've run across catty people everywhere on the internet, including here), but they're a pain in the ass to navigate so I don't go often anyway.
So I'm new here, but came from TheKnot. I was really interested in learning from other girls, whether our ideas were similar or not. After a fews months of being on there, I had such a bad experience because my wedding is not traditional at all. There were [and always will be] those that are supportive of non-traditional ideas, but I'm pretty sure I gave some girls a heart attack when mentioning anything about a farm wedding, reception in a barn and possibly using hay bales as seating. That was the end of it for me. But I do still visit for their photos and inspiration boards. They have some great resources when it comes to that!
Hoping to have a better experience here...So far so good :)
@callirome: You don't actually get INTO it, the dress itself grows on your like a fungus and when it's completely out of control, you get married in it.
