Just wondering if there are any other Calgary brides on weddingbee! It would be nice to hear some local prespective on Calgary wedding planning!
I was born in Calgary and most of my family still lives there! I love it there, but I'm NO help for wedding planning. Sorry!
@ablet: I put this in the Canada section for you! I think you'll have more hits from other Canadian brides!
@Emshaw - Where in BC are you? I have lots of family across the province :-)
Well...I didn't even know there was a Canada board! That is great! So much to learn about weddingbee!
@ Sunshine: I work in Victoria but I actually live about 30 minutes up Vancouver Island in Shawnigan Lake.
@ablet - when are you getting married? And where?
@Emshaw - I love Victoria. FI and I were there in July for a week. FI has family there and he lived there for about 6 months in 2003. We stayed with his aunt and did all the touristy stuff.
One of the days we drove up the island to Port Alberni (sp?) to check out the big trees lol.
@ sunshine: That's awesome! Victoria is definitely a lovely place to be. FYI You nailed the spelling of Port Alberni.
@sunshine23- no date set yet. We want to get married at a restaurant or something similar. You?
Ohh glad I got the spelling right!!
@ablet - We're getting married at the Best Western on McKnight Blvd. We're doing the ceremony and reception there. Out of town guests can stay there. There's a restaurant, pub, coffee shop, pool with water slides, hair stylist, gift shop, and a car rental booth.
Have you looked into the Art hotel downtown? It's apparently really neat and you can do everything around or pool or something like that.
@ sunshine 23- I have heard the pool side weddings there are awesome! I want a winter wedding though so that is not on my list! Thinking something like Teatro. Although, I would like to find somewhere in the NW. Or something closer to the hotels by where you are having your ceremony! I have a feeling our out of town guests won't want to be staying downtown at the $400 a night hotels. So, still not sure what our plan is. Right now I'm trying to find good venues to look at. Seems like there are a lot of great places in the south, but we want to stay in the N...with downtown being the furthest south we will go.
That's why we didn't want to go downtown. Actually we live about 15 minutes north of Calgary (I won't say the name on here :-) so we wanted to stay in the north as well.
I'm trying to think of ideas for you but all I can think of are hotels (that was our main focus for venues). We also checked out the Quality Inn on Mcknight. It was really nice but we choose the Best Western because it had more for guests who were staying at the hotel.
What about renting a room at one of the golf courses in the north?
I'm around and a Calgary bride..well..soon to be Calgary (I live in Airdrie currently).
My ceremony will be at my parents church in Beddington and then the reception will be at the Calgary Aerospace Museum... which is nice because it's close to the airport and all the airport hotels..and many of them are really nice and reasonably priced (my hotel block is at the Best Western Port O'Call).
I've always had a hard time finding decent hotels for decent prices in the NW.
my grandma told me you can rent out the restaurant on princess island in the middle of the river. Also there is the zoo! That would be a cool calgary spot!
@wulfin - I'm in Airdrie too... I wasn't going to say it on here but why not!
Our wedding is at the Best West Port O' Call Inn :-)
Yeah there are pretty much no hotels in NW Calgary. Tons out by the airport in the NE though! Annoying!
I am going to google the aerospace museum! Sounds cool!
Sidenote, I live so far north in Calgary I'm almost in Airdrie! haha
Since there's 3 of us in or near Airdrie, I'll pass on some info.
There's a gift store on the east side between Pizza 73 and the Chinese restaurant. It's called Where Memories are Made. They have TONS of wedding stuff for sale and the owner can order anything off www.weddingstar.com cheaper than we could order it.
YAY to the Airdrie-ites!!!!
The zoo is pretty neat and I've been to a wedding there, it was cool!! Plus they do the catering and decorating, etc.
The Aerospace Museum will definitely be fun and different than the hotel thing (I was trying to avoid a complete duplicate of my brother's wedding which I had a choice of the Museum or the same hotel they had the reception at). The only thing with the Museum is that you have to worry about caterers, renting linens, etc., limited decorating time... it's turning out to be a LOT more work than a hotel reception let me tell you!!!
Yay! I love hearing about places that I wouldn't find in my every day travels!
I bought my jewelry from there. Earrings and necklace for $35. I'm also thinking of getting her to order a pink and brown garter from Wedding Star for me.
hello! I'm also in Airdrie! We are having our wedding at the Sirocco Golf Club near Spruce Meadows.
Has anyone checked out that Tafetta and Tulle wedding gown place in Airdrie? Apparently they have dresses for $499 - $699 I keep seeing her ads on Kijiji.
Thanks for that info about the wedding store on the east side! I'll have to head over and see what it's all about!
Hello fellow Calgarians!
We are getting married at Anderson Ranch (about 5 minutes south of Spruce Meadows). Having previously lived in Ontario (I grew up in Toronto), I had a VERY hard time with venues. There is very little choice outside of hotels or golf courses. I was lucky enough to stumble across GreatEvents, and am now planning a beautiful tent wedding!
Happy planning everyone!
@ Carrotcake... that venue sounds amazing.
Just thought I'd check in with all my local bees.
I'm sure you've been enjoying the rain as much as I have been...... :-\
I am from Saskatchewan! Welcome to the bee.
If anyone is looking for a photographer in Calgary I have 2 fellow Saskatchewanians that have moved to Calgary & are doing photography. I HIGHLY reccomend them. They are great & only wish that they lived closer to take pictures of my wedding.
They are Nathan Elson Photography & Chelsey Roberts Photography. Great people & great photographers! Check them out!
Good info. I already have my photographer (only a month till the wedding) but it may be helpful for others
I am also living in Saskatchewan! I grew up in Ontario though! Man, there is a lot of people from Airdrie! I have a friend that grew up in Irricana. Small world.
I'm from Calgary too!! Not much action going on here, there must be more of us!
I am originally from Calgary - but now live in Medicine Hat (which was supposed to be the sunniest city in Canada - but it has been raining non stop all month!)
@Ms Mini - Are you guys flooding down there? I've heard anywhere south is getting rain really bad, and some places are flooding.
We aren't flooding in the city, but a lot of the surrounding areas are! It is good timing for crazy rain, our 1 year builder warranty on our house is just ending next month - and now we know for sure that our foundation is solid and leak-less LOL!
I am actually really glad that we got our yard drainage finished (we are a brand new build, and had to adjust grading and we put corrugated drainage tubing from our downspouts to the edge of our property) ... before our front yard was like a swamp whenever it rained!
