- Wedding: January 2015
I just got engaged and instead of being excited I’m super overwhelmed. I’ll be married in Istanbul so I am planning a wedding in a foreign country. The grooms family pays for the wedding here but I’m so worried about my fiances family wanting to invite hundreds of people that I barely know. Not because he wants it but because it’s the way theydo it.
Although we already live together, we’ve been subletting an apt so we have to find and buy an apt as well as furnish the entire thing. Typically in Turkey, the brides parents pay for all bedroom, bathroom and kitchen items while the grooms pays for all dining and living room and large appliance items. It never crossed my mind how much money would be involved in just furnishing a home when you are starting from scratch. Istanbul is not a cheap city to live in!
As my family lives in US, only my immediate family will attend the wedding but that is still a few thousand dollars just for flights not to mention I wanted them to come at least once before the wedding. My family does well for themselves but for round trip flights for 3 two times is 6000$. thats 1/4 what my cousin spent on her wedding and it includes only the flight to get here! I’m still planing on holding a “reception” for our friends and family in US after we return but that idea is getting smaller and smaller.
Ill look for anod buy a wedding dress in US with my mom and sister but I’m really stressed because there are only 10 mths until the wedding and I won’t make it back to US for another 3 months to start looking.
is anyone planning a wedding outside their home country? Tell me everything will settle and I’ll relax a bit after the initial shock of everything wears off. It just seems like money will be pouring out of us and we haven’t looked at the first venue.
Id love to hear other peoples experiences.
