I recently got engaged and my fiance gave me his mother's engagement ring. He was close to his mother, who has since passed away. In any case, I had no idea how it looked like prior to the proposal, but I knew I wanted a vintage style ring. It turned out to be a lovely diamond solitaire ring in a very simple but classic design. Anyone else have a vintage or heirloom engagement ring that used to belong to a member of the family? Did you like it or not - and what would you change about it, if anything?
My ring features the diamond my grandmother gave my mom the day I was born. It was set in a plain solitaire setting, so after he proposed, Fi and I took it to get a new setting. I love my ring!
Great grandmothers ring... had to be resized with the stones getting taken out and reset. For ma wee finger!
You bees should know you can't post stuff like that and not post pics!!!
My mother has given my SO a family heirloom diamond ring for when he is ready to propose. Not only is it a beautiful ring, the fact that my family has given it to him is really special too.
I have a ring that my grandma inherited from her aunt, so it's my great-great-aunt's ring. It's amazing. Nothing I ever would have chosen for myself, but now that it's mine, I LOVE it.
I've kept the band that came with my ring, and I'll leave it off of mine so that I can pass it down later (I have size 3.25 fingers, so sizing it down would make it super hard to pass on and keep the look of it). We're getting a simple thin band made to solder to my solitaire, and also a wide band that matches Mr.ND's to wear when I can't rock the e-ring.
Mr.ND also has his grandfather's band to wear after the wedding. Pretty cool that we've got family things to pass down.

I have a yellow sapphire that has been in my fiance's family for 4 generations. The last setting was a little worse for wear, so we got it reset in a new ring that resembles the original (from what we can gather) setting.
I have his mother's engagement ring, but I had to have it refitted and polished. Now, it looks like new and gorgeous!
I have an heirloom stone--it's been in FI's family for over 100 years. His mother had it in her ring, but gave it to FI to propose with; I am very lucky!

The diamond on my solitaire belonged to his grandmother. It was the same ring his grandfather proposed with. It pretty much has tons of history. His grandpa was an american sailor and his grandma was set up on a blind date with him in australia. needless to say, she was swept off her feet and came to america. lol his grandmother will be 86. and she got married around 19.
My FI's mom gave him his late grandmother's diamond ring and he took the stone out of it (1 ct. diamond) and got it put into a new setting for me with side diamonds. It's amazing! I love having an heirloom/new ring.
Well, it sounds like the majority here are happy with their ring, and having an heirloom makes it even more special :) Just for fun, I'm posting a photo of Kate Middleton's engagement ring - the one given to her by Prince William before they got married and the same one given by his father to Princess Diana.

The ring itself is new but the diamond is a fmaily heirloom...

My grandmother and his grandmothers would never take them off. My other grandma upgraded hers (as did my grandpa) around their 40th anniversary and sold their original ones--we don't know what happened to the new ones!
My mom never had an engagement ring, and his mom and dad divorced, so the symbolism wouldn't be that great.
But he bought me an antique (Victorian) ring, and it is AWESOME.
All the rings posted are gorgeous. I love antiques.
That's great you found something you love and have something that is truly unique!
My ring was my husband's great grandma's. My MIL said that I could change the setting if I wanted, but I would never change it b/c it's beautiful and it means so much.
I can't ever get a good picture of it, but I'm wearing my great aunties first diamond ring as my engagement ring.
my mother gave my FI my great grandmothers ring as well as the loose diamond from her wedding ring that she lost, but found (after my dad had replaced it). FI is having a custom ring from those with a matching band. the design is a surprise, I won't see it until our wedding day!
My ring was FIs maternal grandmothers. It is in need of a new setting, as it's pretty thin and worn, but we won't do that until next year sometime I think - and I'll likely get one as close to the original as possible.
The only picture I have is with my wedding band... blurry and taken with a cell!
I love the stone - it has a few visible inclusions in it, which I love because I'll always know it's my stone :)
My ring was my husband's great-grandmother's, but it was not her engagement ring. Just a diamond cocktail ring she and her husband had made (we think in the late 40s). All I told my husband was that I wanted something old and flat - he did well!
I have my great grand mother's diamond re-set into a setting DH picked out and then got a custom wedding ring to match using the tiny accent stones from the origional ring. I like the significance and also that DH chose the style.
both of my rings are heirlooms, the stone is from his family, the band is from my great grandmother. the band has diamonds all the way around as well as some gorgeous engraving on both sides.

I've posted mine many times before, but here it is again!
mine was purchased at an antique jewelry store, but I would not recommend them (my rant on that particular store is here). we got a little ripped off :( oh well, I LOVE my ring any way!
so be careful if you want to go the vintage route!!

I have a similar ring! It isn't my engagement ring, but it was my Grandma's wedding set.

Mine is from FMIL. FI gave me a ring when he proposed (liked it) but I didnt know his mom and he got the diamond earrings FFIL gave her when FI was adopted, and got it made into a ring. She wore those earrings everyday since he came home, and wanted me to have them. She was worried about just two stone (since two is a little odd for some ppl) But I absolutly love it the way it is!!
Heres mine! (its much sparkly in person but my daughted stole my camera so this is phone camera...)
@weeonebride: Very cool! I've never seen a two-stone ring before; very unique!
My ring is my grandmother's that the Mr. received from my parents when he asked for thier blessing.
It's a round cut solitare that we had reset in a more modern platnium setting (the original tiffany setting was way to small and got caught on everything)
Like others, it has some inclusions-but I don't care. I think of my grandmother everytime I look down at my finger.
I really want to post a photo of mine. That might be a bit rude since its not technically mine yet!
mine was his maternal grandmother's ring. it's from the early 1930's. it's the most beautiful thing i've ever seen, and i couldn't be happier with it. plus, the fact that his mother thinks enough of me to pass it on means a lot.
God Heirloom/vintage rings are always so classy!! I love them all ladies.
The stone in mine is from FI's paternal grandmother. She inherited the stone from an Aunt of hers, if I remember correctly, so I am at least the third person to wear this stone...I'll have to find out if it had been passed down any further than that.
When FI first proposed, the ring looked like this...

This "grandma ring" as I call it wasn't my taste, so FI had it reset into this classic solitaire that I love!

I have no idea what the original setting looked like - I wish I knew - but I love having the honor of wearing this family heirloom and can't wait to pass it on some day.
@desireeanne - that looks a lot like mine, which was my great grandmothers from the 30's!
This is a great thread! I'm a lucky woman and have two family engagement rings. The one I wear most regularly has the center stone from my fiance's mother's engagement ring. And the other is from my side of the family and is about 100 years old (more ornate)! Sorry the pics are HUGE. I love them both!!
