Hey Bees, just wondering if anyone else is hoping for/ expecting a non diamond centerstone Engagement Ring. If i know SO as well as I think I do I’ll probably be sporting a Ruby or Sapphire Engagement Ring (some time in the next decade haha).

Yep, we picked a diamond simulant (Diamond Nexus). I love colored stones, too. Diamonds aren’t for me.

I wanted a diamond in the rough for the longest time, but SO talked me out of it… which is a diamond but doesn’t look like one.
Then we talked about getting an aquamarine since its both our birthday stone, but in the end we went with a diamond stimulant for money reasons, which Im happy about, and the wedding band I picked out has aquamarines instead!

Yes I’m in love with the most amazing blue sapphire 🙂

I do not want a diamond technically. I would have loved a princess cut amethyst with two smaller diamonds on the side of it (my birthstone is amethyst and his is diamond), but I think I ruined that last christmas.
SO is horrible about buying gifts, since we have been together he has not bought any really. The first christmas we were together he bought me a “promise ring” which made me cry at 32 years old you don’t want a promise ring. The part that really upset me was that it was yellow gold, which I hate! I’m a silver/white gold gal! Which we had talked about and he still got what he liked. 🙁 I wear it but don’t love it.
Anyway, last Christmas I bought my own gift from him. A really pretty antique looking band with an Amethyst stone and now I think I want something more traditional. Which will work for him, he is waaaaaay more traditional then I am and wouldn’t have it in him to buy me a none diamond E-ring! Luckily I have been browsing and am starting to like the simple round solitaire. As long as it isn’t yellow gold I’ll love it (hopefully)

Oh yea, Im absolutely dying to get a morganite in white or rose gold. something like this: http://www.zales.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12018366′ defer=’defer
Or for him to suddenly become psychic and get me this piece of art instead:http://www.etsy.com/listing/112103103/parched-earth-no6-14k-gold-and-diamond
Pretty much the only thing I’ve said outright though is “no” on (classic) diamonds.

We picked out an Asha stone.
I have moral objections to diamonds among other reasons. I told him from the very beginning that I absolutely do not want a natural diamond stone.
That, and diamonds are like cars… they aren’t worth nearly as much as soon as you drive them off the lot/ put them on your finger. They’re over priced.
Beautiful though. And believe me I don’t judge anyone else. My friend just got the most beautiful heirloom diamond and it’s gorgeous! It’s just not for me.

i have a white sapphire ring and i love it …..i never want to be like everyone else

I like gemstones and he’s talked about black diamonds, so I’d like one, but will probably get a colored diamond.

i am getting a diamond. i love gemstone rings, but if i am getting a white stone i would want an actual diamond, a vintage cut. when we looked at rings we never really discussed anything else, i am not sure why.
i like rubies a lot for engagement rings. i personally like emeralds but apparently they are too soft. sapphires seem to make good engagement rings but i dont like blue, just a personal thing. some of the pale pink ones are nice, esp when set in yellow or rose gold.
did anyone see the ring emily blunt had in “the 5 year engagement”? really nice. vintage ruby or garnet.
i like that historically, it was not a diamond that was traditionally an engagement ring, it was all sorts of stones. but since it has sort of become a tradition, i do like the basic diamond solitaire because it is so recognizeable as a symbol of engagement, for the last century almost.

I wanted a ruby or garnet center stone boarded by smaller diamonds but got a diamond solitare instead, which I hardly ever wear!

I would LOVE a blue sapphire with diamonds, but SO isn’t so keen on the idea. After our first round of shopping, it’s clear he’s into a more traditional look. (He’s worried if it’s not a diamond, people won’t think it’s an engagement ring. Booooo to that.) I even tried going the eternity band only route, but he’s not crazy about that either.
In the end, I’d marry him with a garbage bag twist tie around my finger, so whatever he chooses will be fine, but I was hoping for something a bit non-traditional.

Well I’ve been telling every board that will listen (or not!) that I would love a green amethyst ring… SO is aware and compliant. Ha! So now I wait… 🙂
The CAD image doesn’t quite do the stone justice, but ‘Etsy’ it and you’ll see why I love it!

@Waitingtoexhale: Have you checked out green sapphires? SO originally wanted to get me an emerald because he thought it was more me, but after finding out about the durability issues we ended up getting a green sapphire and it’s gorgeous.

@Eckle: we are past the choosing phase, it is underway! but i would love to see a pic of your ring!
