We desperately want pets but can't start adopting furbabies until we buy a place of our own.
We're currently renting in a pet-free building, but even if we rented somewhere that allows them, I would still wait. I don't want to be caught in a situation where we have to move out and then can't find a pet-friendly place again.
I haven't had any pets my whole life... until I moved in with my husband. My dad is allergic so we've never gotten to have pets, I would always dog sit whenever I could b/c I love dogs! Now I'm very happy to have my very own furbaby finally.
I'm still at home, where we have a cat and a dog, but I won't be able to have a pet with FI for quite some time. I work four days a week for 10 hours, plus a one hour commute each way, and he's going to be going back to school. It's sad, but we're going to have to put animals off for awhile.
I know my take on this is unpopular but i do not like animals. Especially dogs. And cats. And birds. I don't like any of them. I don't like them sniffing me or rubbing me. I'm a terrible person!
@Mollytov: same here! I have always hated animals and we will never ever have a pet!
@krobbie: high five! I mean, i don't want to kick them or anything but i don't want them in my house. ;-P
I didn't have a pet until I was 28, then I got a dog. My parents were always VERY against animals in the house when I was growing up (my mom understandably likes to keep things very clean, and hates the idea of shedding or other animal-oopsies), then I either moved around too much or didn't have the time or money to keep one. But now I really couldn't imagine what life was like beforehand! I completely agree that pets aren't for everyone though!
We don't have pets but hope to one day. I am allergic to cats, although I love them! So we hope to get a dog but at the moment with both of us working long hours full time we don't feel its the right time.
Plus we are thinking of moving overseas for a year next year so if we do decide to go we won't be getting a pet until we return.
I have a lizard at the moment and plan to adopt a shelter cat soon. I was never too fond of furry pets, but I have definitely realized there are some cool cats out there.
I do have to say though, when you tell people "I don't really like dogs or cats" you kind of get treated like a leper!
I'm a professional animal handler/carer and my whole days is spent with animals. I need balance in my life, so I don't own any pets myself. (Unless you count fish)
Both FI and I grew up in pet loving households, and we fully intend to get a dog in the future. At the moment, though, we are very lazy people, and enjoy sleeping in on the weekends, taking off for trips at a moment's notice and just worrying about ourselves. We've decided to wait awhile to have pets, when we're not so selfish.
We dont have any pets now, but we've been planning to get a dog. I'm hesitant though, I never had a pet growing up, but he did.
FI has a snake (and is seriously in love with it, it's cute and a little creepy) but I've always wanted a kitten. We can't afford it at the moment but i'm hoping by next year we'll have a furbaby of our own :)
I like dogs and always had one growing up, but I really don't feel any strong desire to have a pet. DH and I like our freedom to go wherever, whenever way too much to cramp that style with a pet. Don't get me wrong, we think animals are lovely but they're not for us, at least not now. Maybe someday when we have kids and our days of impromptu holidays or weekends away are over, we'll consider getting a dog, but definitely not before then.
I think I'm just in a selfish phase of my life. We don't have any pets right now, because we love to be able to travel without notice or worrying about pet care.
My FI loves animals he would die for them. He has a german shepherd for 13 years now and we're thinking to adopt a kitten very soon (I don't know if this is a good idea, but his dog is really old and doesn't see and hear and just lies down the whole day). I myself am not a dog person, I'm a cat lover!
No pets. Just a 2.5 year old, which is about the same as having pets some days in our house. :)
OP- I just wanted to say thank you for being so responsible!! I get so angry when people get pets and then get rid of them because they *GASP* cost money!
@mrs_pugetsound: Same here. I think the extent of pets growing up was a short lived gold fish.
I wasn't a dog person (and barely a cat person) for the longest time. I discovered small dogs and it all changed. I fully respect people that don't have or want pets, the same as I do for those with or without children (as long as they respect me having pets).
We have two pomeranians now and I can't even imagine life without them. Pretty crazy how quickly things can change. :)
We have 2 cats and 2 dogs and I love it. I grew up with animals and so did DH and I can't imagine not having fur babies. It's a pain sometimes, more so the dogs than the cats, for them we can fill a feeder and waterer and they can fend for themselves. The dogs are a little more complicated when we want to take off but we handle it. Usually we take them with or drop them with family/friends.
I had pets growing up: 2 dogs, 2 rabbits, 3 lovebirds, a pair of firebelly newts and a fish or two. As an adult, I realized that it'll be a long time before I can give the proper attention and care needed for fur babies so in college I went for the cold blooded variety: I had a scorpion and a vivarium of mantids.
Although I love animals, we choose not to have any pets. They're a ton of work and we can't even keep up with all the cleaning, house maintenace, and gardening. The best case scenario would be a friend that has a dog so I can go and visit once in awhile.
One day, when we have kiddies and their old enough, we might get a rabbit (my fave pet) but that may take awhile. For now all your cute pics is enough
Finances, time, rental restrictions, other (dirty), and I don't really want them.
Maybe if I lived out in the country and had a barn then I'd have an outside dog or cat, but it seems like a ton of money, time, hassle, cleanup when the only purpose they serve is to be fun.
No becasue we keep planing on moving we were only gonal live here a year now we are here over 2 and looking to stay longer so I totally should have got a degu 2 years ago, I want one so bad. I love going to the shop where they sell them to look at them. I'm sad.
I always had dogs growing up with a few other animals mixed in. My FI never had pets because his mother is very anal about having a clean house. They're AA and she can't stand my blonde hair all over the house! lol. I finally got my FI to like small dogs but our apartment does not allow any animals. We just play with my family's animals for right now.

Beekeeper
I love animals and would love a pet, but the finances just aren't there right now, or the time for the attention a pet would deserve.
I love looking at the pets board though, living vicariously through everyone else's cuties. :)
Anyone else not have fur babies?
