I could see that happening-- people have a certain style they like, and they know it works for them!
I'm glad my wedding dress did not look like my prom dress-- my prom was in 1994, an it was totally goth! LOL. I don't have any photos or else I'd share :)
Wow! You have specific preferences, I wish I was so decisive.
This was so long ago...

Not quite to dress shopping yet, but I can see myself (in the pink, 4th from left) in a sheath of some sort.
Something like this:

The girl in the red on her wedding day:

And the girl in the teal (first from left) bought this dress:
Prom was nearly 10 years ago for us, though, and big poofy dresses and A line dresses were all the rage.
You know, until I saw this post, I hadn't though about it...but its so true!!!!
Junior Prom:
Junior Homecoming:
Senior Year:
Wedding Dress:

I suppose it makes sense, since people usually have their own style and look good in it. I haven't picked a dress yet but I've been looking at styles that are pretty similar to my prom and homecoming dresses :)
This is a great thread! I don't think I'll end up contributing though: Both of my prom dresses were sheaths (and one was tea length), and I am really liking A line shapes for my wedding gown.
I guess some would say my senior year prom dress could be a wedding dress. My dresses really are not that similar except they are both ballgown style and white lol. Prom and my wedding are the only days I can pull off the ball gown. I will throw in a pic of my junior prom too just for fun.
here is my junior year prom dress. (I am the girl in the pink dress 2nd from the left. My Fi is the guy with the hot pink tie on the right end. We were best friends and almost went together but went with different friends instead.)

Here is my senior year prom dress.....im the one in white :) thats my lil sis and MOH with me.

and here is my wedding dress :)

I totally have to dig out a prom photo burried away, the 2 dresses definitely have similar elements.
I'm glad to say its NOT similar to my prom dresses, because I wore those awful two piece dresses both years! Ha! Not sure what I was thinking... nothing about showing your bellybutton screams 'formal'. But I have stuck with a sweetheart neckline for each dress including my wedding dress!
When I went dress shopping my mom would pull out dresses for me to see they were pretty but reminded me of my prom dress so I usually didn't try them on. My wedding dress is an A-line with pickups and my prom was more a sheath dress.
My dress is nothing like any of my high school formal dresses. I normally went for column dresses or A-lines, but my wedding dress is a massive ballgown. I think, however, that the only reason the styles aren't similar is that I couldn't find any massive ballgowns I really liked that were anywhere near my budget back in high school.
THis is so funny because original thats what i thought i would end up buying because my senior prom dress was like my dream dress. But i did end up with something totally different. Got to say the love the progression of photos from everyones junior to senior to wedding. Its sorta a cool flashback through time!
I'd have to dig a little to find mine but there are definitely some similar elements -- all have straps (I never ever went for the strapless style), and all have a fit and flair style rather than being poofy...and all have some sort of a back detail!! Crazy!
@Grizz: LoL!! Mine was a 2-piece dress too! I'm glad my wedding dress is nothing like it.
mine aren't similar and I'm sooo glad! I think got better taste in 8 years (speaking for me personally)
Haha, not at all. Here's what I can remember:
Junior prom: Slinky, red, low-cut
Senior prom: Off-white, poofy cupcake skirt with some pickups.
Wedding: Short green form-fitting dress with a high collar.
I am actually terrified that I will look just like i did at my prom! I sought to find a dress nothing like mine, but got one similar. Both are a-line, beaded at the top, and straight across. However my prom dress had straps and far less details, and my wedding dress does havve more poof to it. I'll just have to be sure not to wear my hair too similar...
Mine is nothing alike, thank goodness! HS prom was ... *gasp* almost 15 years ago! Mine was a high square necked shapeless drape of ugly velvety-like black blob. I was pretty insecure with wearing anything tight and totally clueless. Wedding dress: fitted slim A line, sweet heart. I'm a bit more comfortable in my skin now than in HS.
@gogogiraffes: Thank you!!!!! I seem to be drawn to that style. lol
Awesome thread! I laughed aloud and my FI asked, "What's so funny?" and I said, "I'm sorry, I can't say yet!" as he might be able to guess details of my dress now. A couple months ago I marveled at some of the similarities between my prom and wedding dress. I'll have to explore a little to find my prom pics but yes, so true! Can't wait to see more posts! :)
mines kind of similar, but kind of not, kind of sooo much better!

I love this post! It is really funny because my wedding dress is made by the same company that made my senoir prom dress. While they are not completely similar, they do have some of the same features. I love the ruffles of both and the bit of sparkle they each have. On my wedding dress, I am having the shoulder strap removed so it will be strapless with the sweetheart neckline.
Prom circa 2004:

oon me:

I so wish I could post my wedding dress on here! Boo to FI for trying to find pics of it. :/ :/
But there are a few similar elements between the three dresses, for sure. Particularly to my Junior prom dress, which was my favorite dress ever before the wedding dress.
I wish I had been allowed to go to prom...I've been with my FI since high school, so we would've went together 3 years! (He was a junior when I was a sophomore, and he went to college locally during my senior year). But my parents were super-conservative, so they said no. Booo. I feel like I missed a rite of passage!
the fact that oth are long and strapeless is all mine have going for them... otherwise nothing in comon.
I wore an A line for my junior prom and a (kinda) fit and flare that wasnt altered right so it was too loose. But i want a ballgown or a bigger aline....I HATED my senior prom dress i settled on it because we had been dress shopping for like 5 hours and it was the only thing that had enough pouf and wasnt hideous that zipped all the way.
oh my gosh... i'm looking, but i don't see any similarities except that they are dresses.

Don't have one from senior prom (which was totally different anway- red still, but off the shoulder, tea length, very 1940's). But junior prom, circa 2001:

Red, gold glitter in a paisley pattern
And wedding:

Senior Prom

THE dress! its mori lee 4524 (random google pic), dont have any of me yet, waiting on alterations, and its very similar! but im so glad someone posted about this! my senior prom dress is a mori lee too! it just randomly happened that way.. I was looking for BMs dresses (having already purchased my dress) and saw this one on display and REALLY liked it, so just for kicks and giggles I tried it on.. and didn't want to take it off.. ended up ordering it, my mom made it easy by suggesting it (she later confessed that she didnt like my first dress!)
sorry the pics are so big they wouldnt resize, even after i tried to edit it..
What a great post! Yes, my dress is by the same designer I also purchased my prom dresses and black tie/gala event dresses from. Her designs fit my body, taste and signature style :)
I never actually got to wear my prom dress :(. It still has the tags on it and is in my closet! My prom gown was ivory satin with black lace covering the entire thing, a-line and strapless. My wedding dress is completely different - no lace, has beading, white, with straps.
Haha what a great post! I've never thought about it, but my prom dress and my wedding gown do have similar qualities! I only have like 4 prom pictures because when my hihg school sweetheart and I broke up way back when, I deleted all of the photos of us from my photobucket haha! But here they are!

My prom dress. You can't see it, but the hem line was just below my knee.

And this is my lovely gown.
this post is soooo awesome! i think my tastes have definitely changed a lot since my prom! I wore a long column dress with beading and bling all over it, and my wedding dress was wayyy simpler, only some beading/flower details on the side of the dress, and was only fittle through the high hip (slim a-line, but not quite a mermaid). amazing to see though that some people love what they love & know what they look and feel good in! you gals are gorgeous, then & now!
I never went to prom (or homecoming, or any other dance requiring a date!)
not really. my junior prom gown was my mother's junior prom gown 30 years earlier...yellow with white lacy pattern woven in and a green sash, sheath-style with a bateau neckline. (no pix of that one, sorry.) i suppose my senior prom gown had SOME things in common with my wedding gown...it was an A-line with a low-volume crinoline built in for just a little pouf, and had a very open (~4in from side to side) decorative corset for the top three inches or so of the back, and it was blue. well, it was close to the same shade of blue my dress is now, but had a sheer black overlay so it looked navy blue, and the overlay had little black velvet stars sprinkled down it (more of them at the bottom). it also had straps and was cut straight across. (yes, i'm wearing sneakers in that picture, lol. i was about to drive to my friend's house and didn't want to do it in my heels.)

holy CRAP i used to be skinny. anyway, while my wedding gown is technically "A-line", it's fitted through the hips, so it looks more like a fuller fit-and-flare. and while it's also blue (the sample in the pic is silver), it's a much, much lighter blue. and there's no overlay, no straps, and while it technically also has a straight-across cut, there's a slight sweetheart "dip" in it that's accentuated by the drape of the fabric, so it's not so harsh. as for the corset...yes it's decorative but it's also 100% functional, and it has a modesty panel. and i'm having the crinny removed and the skirt slimmed a bit, so it's not so full. i do plan on cleaning and restringing the same crystal necklace to wear though.

so maybe it's a little similar in cut, but not really beyond that. prom was 10 years ago for me, so that's not surprising. my dress at my first wedding is completely unlike both prom dresses AND this gown.

Wow, I JUST realized as I sold my old prom gown today that my wedding dress is so so similar to both of the prom dresses I wore! Case in point:
Junior prom: sweetheart neckline, straps, sheath, beaded
Senior prom: sweetheart neckline, beaded, sheath
My bridal gown: Sweetheart neckline, straps, beaded, sheath(ish)
I guess my style has been pretty consistent with what I like! Anyone else's wedding gowns end up to be eerily similar to your prom gown? Or was it way opposite? Post pictures please :)
