Haha I have had the exact opposite reaction - I need that extra belly space right now! You should be thankful that you don't, lucky girl.
He he...well, I didn't mean it like that! I just mean that it is all one style it seems latley (and unfortunately for me its not flattering on me!)
I like the classic shift dress; I like classic styles you can use for years and years
I know! I've been to a lot of wedding this summer and it seems like that is totally the style on every guest there. I wore a slim fitting dress to the last wedding I went to and had multiple compliments on the dress saying that it was such a "different" style. Nice to show off the curves once in a while!
I totally understand where you are coming from. Except for me it's the empire waist... I'm a pretty thin girl, always have been, but for some reason pretty much anything with an empire waist makes me look preggers, and it's all I can seem to find nowadays! So yes, I am really disappointed in the latest styles.
I'm with you Erin. I still have no RD dress. It's making me crazy. Everything looks ridiculous on me. And I have the added problem that most things are too big to begin with, and when stuff does come in my size I swear there's like 2 in the entire country. I'm making one last ditch search effort this weekend. Otherwise I'm just wearing shorts (JK). No, but seriously, I've worn anything decent I ahve to some other wedding related event. I might have to rewear. I don't really want to, but what can you do?
Miss Snowflake -- I am totally with you on empire waist. Except, I am busty so it makes me look even more prego!
I feel ya but for me it's a different problem. I can't wear any dresses or shirts that have absolutely no seams to definite the waist. I have a very hour glass shape with boobs and hips and if a dress doesn' thave a defined waist, (be it hight or low), I look SO fat because the fabric hangs off my boobs, which are REALLY far out past the rest of me.
I have even tried on BM dresses as possible RD dresses - no luck. Hoping that fall styles are good...
UGh, I'm having the same problem. the bubble dessses make me look bad bad bad. And the wierd extra fabric in the front looks aweful on me too- makes me look a lot bigger than I am. I'm still on the hunt for the perfect RD dress, and yes, I can't wait until fall's fashions come out, hopefully they will be better!
I have bought and returned at least 10 dresses in the past two months. I hate the roomy waist styles. I am very thin but since my hips are >10-11" larger than my waist, extra room in the waist just makes me look fat. I have a very narrow waist, and I need to show it off to avoid looking much bigger than I am.
Have you seen this? http://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=26497&vid=1&pid=646657 It cinches around the waist and isn't super frou frou, but it is cute, especially for a rehearsal dinner. I have it, but it's a bit short on me so I'm not sure what to do with it.
chicagobride I love that dress! But Im with you Erin. Im not a fad girl, I like classic pieces that are timeless. I cant seem to find anything either. Bubble looks bad, FI hates empire (so do I) and layers on me are just no good. Oh and I dont enjoy prints (on me,) So Im SoL.
figure I wont start looking for a RD dress until a few weeks before. If I dont find anything, Ill wear something I already have
I totally agree with you, Erindesmar! I had a really hard time finding a RD dress. I'm 31 and I just felt like the bubble hem just looked too young on me. It didn't have the classic feel I was looking for. I ended up just wearing something that I had in my closet (but hadn't actually ever worn before). Have you tried the JCrew final sale?
@GaBGal- I hear ya! I'm a 34D chest, but size 5 pant! It's soooooo frustrating!
Yes, me!!! I like the fit and flare looks, not the 'let's pretend i'm pregnant'. If you have ANY boobs at all, you suddenly look like you're hiding something. It's such an awful look on me.
I went to Black White House Market for my RD. They have classic "adult" styles. Not meaning that negatively, but I equate trendy to younger.
I like dresses that *fit* people, hah- not baggy dresses, ill-fitting maxi dresses, really loose ensembles, trapeze dresses, etc. Unless you're a size 2, the generally don't look all that fantastic, and I see them EVERYWHERE!!! Wear something different! lol!
I think nicely fitting, really unique, vintage style sundresses don't get enough love, and same goes for shirtdresses. These are both generally attractive on most frames- I wish designers would go a bit more 20's-50's vintage as opposed to this constant recycling of 60's/70's/80's fashion, bleh! The older vintage looks are far better for showing off the female figure!
Anthropologie is infuriating me lately- they used to have gorgeous skirts and dresses and lately it's all crap! I can buy the same stuff everywhere else- I shopped at Anthro for unique pieces :/ I'm resorting to ebay to find older Anthro skirts and dresses just to get some lovely new pieces- at least the old ones are unique!
I hate the current styles! They are soooo unflattering. And to those tho think the empire waist and poof from their hides your tummy - WRONG! They look like maternity shirts and anyone wearing them looks liek they are needing the room to grow. Unless you are a twig, avoid! (Btw - I am not a twig I've got curves in some great places... and curves in some not so great places. I am just telling you from seeing all my not-so-stick-like friends wear "the style" that it looks bad on us all!)
Yeah, I had an awful time finding a RD dress. My waist is my most narrow part, so all these empire waist dresses just made me look like I was wearing a potato sack and emphasized my hips. Bleh. I ended up going with some cotton Calvin Klein sundresses.
Went shopping the other day with a friend of mine and she was looking for a dress to wear to a wedding. Something shiny and simple .. all we found were the ruffles, EVERYWHERE!! It was quite overwhelming that they didn't have any thing classic. Styles are great but we need variety. :)
I'm just sick of EVERYTHING looking the same. Wedding dresses and regular dresses!
Only way I wear a bubble dress is if I put a nice belt high on my waist to show my waist. I cant stand that style especially on girls with big boobs - it looks horrible. Women dont be ashamed of your curves!!!!!!!! Im hoping people dont wear those to my wedding since it's semi-formal a few might sneak in - I love fitted dresses!
I just love that dresses are so in right now in general. I love them and wear them for e.v.e.r.y.thing. However, I'm really sick of tent dresses. not flattering on anyone.
I live vintage-style party dress shapes with a defined waist and full skirt, however. Love love love.
I have had this exact conversation before. One of my friends calls these dresses "ladysacks." I am wearing a ladysack right now. I feel very ambivalent about it. It's got a beautiful design in terms of pattern and neckline, but the preggo-waist is very...sack-y.
I am in good shape, and I am also short (5'2). I am very conscious of the fact that I am wearing this because it is in fashion, and not because it is right for me. :(
Could not have said it better - I am guilty of owning these styles b/c nothing is out there....but are they for me? NOPE!
I can't stand the new styles that give women no shape! I have big boobs, if something doesn't show my curves I look uber fat :(
It would be nice if designers took into account that most women are NOT built like runway models. I have the same issue as frenchbulldog ... my bust is bigger than my hips. Empire waists usually look like heck on me. I must have my waist defined or I just look fat - which I'm not! And bubbles and ruffles and stuff ... not working for me! I think I'm going to have to take up sewing again to get what I need.
Ugh! I am with you for the most part. I love a good bubble dress and well-placed ruffles but enough already! I bought a cute top yesterday and didn't bother to try it on (major mistake, and I do it all the time). Well I put it on when I got home and it was cute but it just had too much fabric going on--empire waist, a little tie in the back, low cut w/spaghetti straps, and a ruffle at the bottom (which happened to hit at my hips--bad idea. Ruffles do not belong on the widest part of your body). I looked pregnant. And don't get me wrong. There are plenty of times when I am relieved to be in lose clothing but not all the time.
@LovestheBear - wow - shopping without trying on. Leap of faith! My FI does this too. All the time. He also buys clothes on the internet, which is sometimes hit and miss. I HAVE to try everything on, I guess because there have been so many times when I've loved a piece of clothing, but have been unpleasantly surprised when I put it on.
I'm so glad somebody said it! It's even worse if you're plus size... everything is empire waist. I just look pregnant when I wear those. I'd kill for a nice dropped waist dress!
I agree! I think the dresses are cute on other people but they make me feel bloated/fat/chunky. My FI thinks some are cute but when I ask if it makes me look preggers he just laughs and nods. So WTH? He thinks it's cute that it makes me look preggers. Ooookay. Just going with that one.
My other rant is the crappy fit and icky looking clothes that are all of a sudden coming out at J Crew. Their fit has gone down A LOT in the last few years.

Am I the only one who is sick of the bubble dress/ruffle dress/poofy dress look with lots of layers? Not wedding dresses, regular dresses.
I cannot seem to find anything lately that fits me well or is flattering. Have been searching for a RD dress and am not impressed with what is out there.
Since when did a lot of space in the belly area become so popular! Am I missing something?
