Me and the hubby have decided to start trying for a baby this fall. I'm starting to take steps to prepare for it (see doc, stop BC, start charting, start vitamins, etc.) and am getting really excited. The only problem is, we aren't telling any of our friends or family. And, I don't want to talk his ear off about it! So, anyone else in the same boat that can share in my excitement?
I am at exactly the same stage! I keep bringing it up to the DH and he's getting more and more annoyed haha. I will probably go off BC in May and then just see what happens. If nothing by fall, then we will try a bit harder.
That's so exciting...May is REALLY soon! :) I'm already totally consumed by everything baby, I can't imagine how I'll be when its only two months away! What are you doing to prepare or keep busy until then? Anything you guys want to accomplish before pregnancy or baby?
We have to wait until fall because I'm in a pretty intense school program. So, we'll try for a few months (that would line up with a summer baby) and if it doesn't work out, I guess we'll wait until the following year! So, unfortunately we won't fall into the "we'll see what happens camp", at least this time around! That sounds like a much more relaxed and enjoyable way to go about TTC.
We'll actually be trying right after the wedding in just 4 short weeks!!
I've actually been considering it too.... We have some vacations which will include lots of drinking this summer; so fall seems about right.
Anyone worried about feeling blah about their appearance?? maybe that's just me being self conscious.....
@MissBeans: I know it's very exciting! Well i'm actually a BM in a wedding in October so I don't want to be too big for it. I'm not even sure what our dresses are like yet so i'm not sure if I'll even have any room, so I guess I will have to see. I figure I might be able to get a way with being 3 months for it.
As far as preparing, i'm taking pre-natals and trying to eat even healthier. Also exercising a LOT. I like the whole idea of just seeing what happens because I think stressing about it makes it harder. We went on our honeymoon to Australia in January so we got that long travel bug out of our system. Now we are just trying to get our house prepared.
It will be so good when your done your intense school program because you will have eliminated a LOT of stress and can worry only about you and baby ;)
@MissBeans: We're trying in the fall. I'm going off BC in late June/early July. I have a few more appointments to do, but we're definitely trying around our second anniversary.
YAY! I think we're going to start trying in August or September. We were going to sooner but I got a post-doc felllowship that starts in September and I don't want to be obviously pregnant going into it. It's going to be bad enough to have to take some time off to have a baby in May or beyond (depending how long it takes) because it only goes from Sept 1-Aug 31 and I imagine I'll have to then extend it but it is what it is. I don't really want to keep putting our lives on hold for my career, which we've already done by waiting this long. We can't wait!
Also, we're going to try not to tell people even though I feel like I've already told a lot of people (without being too specific) what our general time frame is. Also, I had to tell my mom what we're thinking because she's willing to come live with us for a few months so that I can go back to finish out the postdoc asap without worrying about putting an infant into daycare. She swore not to tell anyone though :)
PS I just wanted to add that I went off BC last June, and it took me a FULL 3 months to get my period, and I'd say another 3-4 months for my cycle to regulate after that. Obviously I'm not a doctor or anything but I'd recommend going off sooner than later and using condoms, because that was stressful (and I don't have any medical issues that contributed to it, my doctor said it happens sometimes). The whole time I kept thinking "gosh, what if we'd wanted to start trying right away?!"
I'm working on getting healthy too :) Glad to know there are others with the same "timeline." I have opted not to talk about ttc with friends/family also, because I find once a few people know it's all they want to talk about and I hate the pressure!! I'm content with keeping things private right now..
@monalisa670, I'm glad to know that someone else's cycle was not completely normal after stopping bc. This is my first month off of bc and it's been a little off to say the least!! I have heard it can take up to a year to have a regular cycle... which is why we starting the process a little earlier..just in case it takes my body a while to adjust.
@greeneyes_320, I can relate to your fears about body image..it's the unknown that gets me a little on the anxious side more than anything else!!
What kind of BC are you ladies on? Did you have normal cycles before you ever went on BC??
Yay! I'm so glad there are so many others with a similar time frame! And those a little ahead of us too...hopefully you'll be experts by the time our turns come around! :)
@greeneyes_320 - I'm excited about the preggo "bump", I think they are adorable! But after the fact, I hope it'll be easier to deal with body changes since you have something to show for them (an adorable babe)!
@lindsay05 - Sounds like we're pretty similar on prep stuff. I really need a kick in the pants to start exercising regularly though...I know just how important it is! The house stuff will have to wait until summer for us, with school and everything. Oh, and I have the Mirena IUD, which I've heard some horror stories about!
@monalisa670 - I'm glad that I'm not the only one crazy enough to have a kid while finishing education stuff up. It's slightly different for me, since I'll still have one more year of classes. But, I agree, I'm not putting my life on hold any longer! And thanks for the info about BC. I got the earliest appt with my midwife's office. I go in two weeks from now. Hopefully that will be enough time to regulate before fall.
@Lindsay05: I'm on Yasmin. Before BC (8 years ago), I had regular cycles, so I have no clue how it'll be off the pill.
Yeah I have heard stories about the IUD as well. I am on the EVRA patch. I had normal cycles before I went on it and hope they continue when I go off of it. But hearing @monalisa670 say that it took a few months to have a cycle again scares me a little! Makes me want to stop the BC right now.
I went of the NuvaRing 1 1/2 months ago, and still no period. Luckily we are not planning to start trying before this summer, though, but I am still a bit worried.
I stopped taking BCP about the end of January, we intended to use condoms for a few months, but that seems to have gone to the wayside, we are just having sex, I am not charting, we just want to see what happens if we do things naturally and not put so much emphisis on getting preg
Add me to the Fall TTC list! My husband and I are planning on starting TTC at the end of August/beginning of September. I am a teacher and we would love to have our baby about 3-4 weeks after school ends next year. We already chart and I do not take BC. Because we chart, if we are at a fertile time in my cycle we use condoms. Charting has kept us pregnancy free for 15 months, and we will continue charting throughout the first few months of pregnancy too.
Good luck ladies!!!!!
We are going to start trying early next year! So, no, not this fall, but I thought I would chime in anyway!
Unfortunately we don't fall into the see what happens camp either :-( DH works out of state from March-September, so ideally we would conceive in March, and have our baby in December-ish. Can't mess with that schedule too much, otherwise we risk him missing the birth, etc.
@Lindsay05: I was on Loestrin24fe and before that I was on Alesse, on and off since i was 18 (i'm 28). and yes, my cycles were completely normal before.
I'm not saying that about my period to scare anyone, I just think for those preparing to TTC in the near future (yay for fall being near future!!!) you may want to think about going off bc sooner than later. my doc told me not to worry about it but i'm glad i went off when i did, personally. of course your period could come right away and that's great too!
@MissBeans: thanks for starting this thread, it makes it even more exciting to realize we are getting close! i'm glad we have each other! let us know how your appt goes in 2 weeks. I am actually going in for my 'pre-conception' visit on wednesday!
I'm loving all the tips and reminders here! And you're right, monalisa670, this thread is really making it feel so real!
My appt in 2 weeks is for IUD removal and pre-conception. You'll have to post to let us know how your visit went too. If anyone has any good ideas on what should be covered/asked at this type of appt, I'm all ears! If this will be my provider during my pregnancy/labor, is it okay to ask questions related to their policies? Or is it too soon for that?
@Lindsay12.13.2010 - what all are you doing to try and "time" your pregnancy/birth to fit with your DH's schedule? We're in the same boat and will be charting, as well as using OPKs. We only have a 3 month window, although I'd much prefer to get preggo early (like late Aug/early Sept) in order to have more time off w/ the babe before fall semester.
Yay for all of us fall TTC'ers! :) It's going to be here before we know it!
Side note - can anyone help me learn to "tag" a username? I tried to search for instructions, but apparently don't know how! Thanks! :)

Me! I came off the Pill in mid-February and April is going to be our first month TTC. My first "natural" AF has arrived after a 35 day cycle and it's such a relief that my body is so far still functioning as it should. I might add though that before AF arrived yesterday I was slightly worried that I was already knocked up...
I've been taking a multi-vitamin and folic acid since December and I do pretty regular exercise so I think we're good to go on that front. At this stage the plan is to just see what happens for the next three or so months and then maybe around June I'll have a go at charting if nothing's happened.
I've only told a couple of people that we're TTC (my MOH and a newylwed friend from work) but I definitely don't want to broadcast our plans to all and sundry. As it is the girls at work are already taking bets on when we're going to conceive!
Good luck to you ladies and hope everything goes well!

EDIT - April is Fall for me cos I'm in New Zealand!
@maisymay - you've got a very similar timeline as well. Glad to hear you've had success w/ charting to avoid pregnancy. That's what I'll be starting in a few weeks here. Let's hope that we can use it to our advantage this fall and that the timing works out for both of us! :)
@MissBeans: All you have to do is find the person you want to tag, and hit reply (under their post!)
I've been charting to avoid too and so far so good. We mostly just abstain when I'm ovulating but also use the good old pull and pray (I know, I know, not the best, but works for us). As far as the preconception visits go, I have already asked my PCP, who made sure my immunizations were up to date, and my old obgyn, who asked a few questions about my heritage/family history and said we are good to go. But, for pregnancy and childbirth I am switching doctors to one my friend LOVED, and she said that this doctor actually does some bloodwork at your preconception visit to screen you for genetic disorders or something. So, it should be different and hopefully more detailed. I'll let you know how it goes for sure! Oh and I might actually ask her about some of her policies since I pretty much know I'll be using her for my pregnancy.
I was SOO happy when I saw this thread last night! I was on the IPAD though and couldn't post.
Put us as part of that group! We're planning on trying come late October during our 1 year anniversary trip to Disney. I always joke with my DH that Disney is where dreams come true right?!
Right now I'm working on taking weight off as I'm a fuller figured woman who wants to be more fit before attempting pregnancy. I'm not on any pre-natals or anything just yet (should I be?) and right now am basically just chomping at the bit and annoying my husband with my constant chatter about all things babies.
I'm absolutely obsessed and can't handle it!
Count me in!
Fall is so far away but I feel like I am already consumed with every aspect of it. I went for my pre-conception appointment, had my genetic testing, got my shots, and started taking pre-natals. I also started working back otu again because I need to lose 10 pounds to be right at my healthy wait. I like it because it gives me something to look forward to and I can't stop talking about it with DH. I did tell my mom and my best friend got kind of suspicious when I had so many doctors appointments in one week.
@roxy821: I can tell that my husband's getting ready for babies when we were at dinner with friends. Across from our table was a table with a toddler. My husband's face lit up at the sight of the kid. Just by that look, I can tell that he's getting excited for it!!
Also, with the appointments, my DH is doing them as well. I doesn't look super suspicious that he's finally getting a dental exam and physical 11 years after waiting so long. We're chalking it up to getting healthy, not flat out saying that we're close to TTC.
Roxy, we are twins based on your response in my other thread!!
Waiting is absolutely the hardest part!! Imagine when we ARE pregnant and having to wait 10 months to meet that special little person?
GAWD I AM SO IMPATIENT!!!
@nkillet- I just feel like it takes me so much time to warm up to an idea and then when I make a decision I am 100% for it and just want it to happen!
Roxy,
I hear that! I can be a bit impulsive. My husband is the type that won't commit to something and then list every single reason why it isn't a good idea! I'm trying to work on him getting out of this habit cause he does it with EVERYTHING and its the pits when he's miserable in something.
I know we have a trip planned to Disney but I want a baby NOW! :oP
Ughh every day I'm like "maybe we should just start now?" haha. i can hardly wait for august/september. Maybe we'll try in July and just assume it won't happen right away, haha. Also- I'm trying to lose weight too! I gained 15 lbs when we got married because it coincided with me quitting smoking. I've been trying to lose it for almost 2 years now and nothing. Well I finally am doing weight watchers and I don't know if its their new plan as opposed to the old one, or the fact that I am motivated by baby but it's finally working! How much are you guys trying to lose? Is it to be thinner than your normal or to get back to your normal? I would love to get thinner than my normal so gaining pregnancy weight isn't as scary!
I'm actually trying to take off quite a bit. I'm definitely plus sized right now with tons of sass!! Hubby and I have been eating really healthy and using a new app call Lose It! Great program which tracks calories for you and everything.
I'd like to lose maybe 50lbs if I can by October. I keep saying that should be my focus and it is but I'm still driving myself mad!
@monalisa670- I am trying to lose weight as well. I gained 17 pounds over the past 7 months. I was the same weight since I graduated college so I def see that as my healthy weight. So my goal is too lose all of the extra weight by the fall. I will be a high risk pregnancy so the best way I can ensure that I can stay healthy and off od bed rest would be to be at my ideal weight. I hate working out, but it's good to have a motivation like that.
My fh and I will start ttc in October when he will be on leave for three weeks from a deployment in Afghanistan. We are planning on meeting up somewhere, (Rio is in our thoughts right now) so for 3 weeks we will go like rabbits. Then if it doesn't happen then we will continue once he is back in Canada in January.
I am 40 so I will be nearly 41 by the time we start. I have had fertility tests (all good!) and am not much of a drinker to start. I do smoke but was a one ciggie a day girl before meeting my S.O so it will be easy to go cold turkey once he is gone for his work. I am already starting to do extra strength excercies now and actually had my iud (non hormonal) removed last week.
I am hopeful I will conceive but am not delusional either and know that I may need some assistance if it doesn't go well.
Good luck to all you ladies :)
We are thinking about TTC sometime after the wedding (I am also currently on the patch). My main concerns are that I'm already 35 and about 20lbs overweight. He's 28 and wishes we could wait a year or 2 but understands that may limit our ability to concieve. Although I can tell that he's emotionally ready, I know that he just wants to be a little more financially stable which will be in a year or two. Somedays I'm excited about TTC so soon and others I'm scared to death.
@Lindsay12.31.2010: Thanks! :)
@carrieknitscake: That is so cute about your husband! My husband actually convinced me to start trying this fall. I was planning on waiting until the following year.
@Oneeleven: We've got a short window of opportunity too, not quite as short as you do though. Here's to hoping we're both very lucky and it works the first time around! :) Also, how was the IUD removal experience? I've got an appt to have mine removed soon, and I'm hoping it's relatively simple and pain free. I was very fortunate that placement did not hurt a bit, so I'm hoping removal will be a similar experience. Thanks!
@DalmatiaRN: Being more financially stable in a year or two might work out just fine. Aside from prenatal care and delivery, and a few other expenses, babies can cost as little or as much as you want them to. I've heard from so many people that got lots of "extras" that they were either used very little.
I hear you ladies about being impatient! Due to school I have to "time" the pregnancy/delivery (as much as one can time something like that). That has been hugely beneficial in not being tempted to start until fall. Perhaps you could come up with a similar goal/time frame that might make it easier?
I'm trying to get into better shape too. I've heard if you're active and in good shape before and during pregnancy that labor is easier. That should be some good motivation to exercise! :)
@monalisa670: I totally agree! I had gone off the pill last June, and it took 84 days for me to get my first period. After that, my periods have been an average of 40 days each.
It's really exciting that you're going to start trying, but try not to get disappointed if you don't get pregnant within the first month or two. I'm on cycle 7 already, and it's started to get a little troubling to us, but we're not going to give up! Hopefully it will happen more quickly for you!
We are also going to start trying this fall, so add me to the list! :) I seriously can't wait--Im so excited about it! I'm planning on going off BC after the summer, so in September, and then we'll start trying in October. DH wants to start trying earlier but we have two weddings to go to in TX next spring (april and may), and I don't think I'd be able to fly there if I'm like 7 or 8 months pregnant. Does anyone know the restrictions on flying while preggers?
@hilsy85- My doctors has advised me to only fly during my 2nd trimester. I'm not pregnant but DH wants to plan a trip and I asked when I went for my last appointment when it is ok to fly. During the first trimester they worry about you flying because if you do have a miscarriage you will be away from home and away from your doctor. And during the last trimester, what would you do if you went into labor early. And if the baby was born early and needed to stay in the hospital it would be the hospital where you were at the time of delivery and will be a while before you could get a baby home.
@roxy821: Yeah that's what I thought...especially because I've heard that high altitudes can lead to early labor/contractions. I didn't know about the 1st trimester not being recommended though! Well hopefully we'll get preggers quickly (fingers crossed!) and I'll be 4-6 months pregnant when we go to TX. And yikes that sounds soo weird to say--and to imagine!
