haha! I totally do! My FH HATES going to walmart of target with me, I can spend hours debating things like knives and pots and pans. I start these little conversations with myself that are never ending!
Ha! I do to a point- when my SO and I moved in together- we slowly started buying stuff, so now we ALMOST have all the nice appliances we have ever wanted. However, I've made up ridiculous rules: we can't buy a coffee maker, we need to use a coffee-press. Nice knives-and a pizza stone out the window until he puts a ring on it. Like that is gonna help my situation.
haha, i really need a blender and i keep thinking "wellll maybe if i wait just a few more months i can get a nice one off a registry..." as if i even need a nice blender! but it beats the hell out of registering for some useless kitchen device i'll never use!
Um I'm pretty sure weekly I think of something that we could just register for. I always tell BF well if we got engaged we could register for a Kitchen Aid mixer or we could have nice place or what not. He rolls his eyes at me. I don't think I'm enticing him any quicker.
Yes, I do. It's even worse when buying a house and you need stuff, but then you say, hey, maybe one day he'll propose and I'll get new good, name brand stuff.LMAO (Yea, I say one day because I'm in a BAD mood!)
I just try to make it off what I have and plan to register for the fun stuff.
Here's what I recommend in the meantime! Skip the Paula Deen knives, go get yourself a GOOD chef's knife. You can do almost everything with a nice chef's knife, so you'll have a good knife while you wait; and then when you register you can fill in the rest of the set!
(My top recommendation is Shun. I have Wusthof knives myself, but the Wusthof knives I've seen in stores lately looks like they have started cutting corners on quality.)
Here's a good one. I'd recommend get at least the the 8". It's pricy, but I'd soooo much rather have a single good knife than a whole set of so-so quality knvies!

I accidentally told the SO what I was thinking. He'd been away all weekend and I was jabbering on excitedly about microwaes and pots and pans and I had to let him know about Paul Dean taunting me. (Which I'm sure was exactly what he wanted to hear about after a weekend of getting yelled at, running and being woken up at 2am to put on his formal uniform...) He confirmed that good knives were 'very important' and I told him my dreams of a registry and he laughed (not in a bad way, more like you're funny and that's not a bad idea).
Then I quickly changed the subject because I promised myself I wouldn't say anything about engagements this month while he's bogged down with army stuff. So I only made it a week, but who's keeping score?
@abbyful: ooooh, it's so pretty. I might have to consider that as one of my options. I'm just not so sure I can warrant spending $150 on one knife. It might be a gift to myself as a reward for something. Maybe once I run my first 5k...
You only need a couple of really stellar knives! I use the same two over and over again. As long as they're sharp and you hone them, you'll be fine!
@MsEucalyptus - Once you get a high-quality knife, you'll be sold on them! I completely understand where you're coming from, I always thought it was crazy to spend $100+ on a knife and that people that bought such things were just throwing their money around... until my mom gave me a nice (Wusthof) chef's knife one year for Christmas. The difference is absolutely amazing, I couldn't beleive it!
Well it looks like I know what I'm asking for as a birthday present from my parents. My mom was just asking me the other day.
This is great!! My SO loves to cook and about once a week he will be yelling about how we don't have enough pots, or how the one pan we own is all banged up or our cheapo knives are dull.. I could go on forever. Everytime he does this I say, you know, my mom is waiting to throw me a fantastic wedding shower and YOU can pick out any kind of cookware you want! And you'll never have to complain about crappy knives or banged up pans ever again! He usually doesn't have anything to say after that.
LOL, YES! When I moved in with SO, he had more kitchen supplies than probably the average bachelor, but still was pretty lacking in that department. I've only bought a few small things since, because I can't help but think it won't be TOO much longer til we are getting married and being gifted such things!!
*sigh...* Of course, here I am over a year later continuing to use poor-to-mediocre quality steak knives to cut everything from pineapples to prosciutto... ugh! Haha!
I want a new Kitchen Aid stand mixer. In a different color. (I know...I'm a bit spoiled) But I have to keep telling myself to put it off until I can register for it.
I've always been obsessed with dishes and silverware, no idea why. In my 10 years of living on my own I've had like 5 sets because I fall in love with something and HAVE to buy it. Anyway, the dishes and silverware set I have now I've had for like 4 years. That's a LONG time for me and I'm dying to replace them all. They still serve there purpose but they have seen better days. I keep eying a set a Macy's I really want and then talk myself out of it by reminding myself I will be able to add it to the registry.
hehehe I know what you mean! I do that occasionally... I think "I wonder if I could register for that..." then I remember that we likely arent even going to register for gifts (Just for honeymoon) as we already have everything we need! But I definately think that about my kitchenaid mixer... "maybe I can register for the ice cream maker attachment..."
@MsEucalyptus: slow-clapping the line "Paula Dean, that bitch"
bahahah
@Melissabegins: I was totally just going to comment on the same thing. It's so true, though. Her and her sticks of butter. And knives, apparently. ;)
I am like that, too, though it more often goes something like "But, Amaryllis, if you get the expensive Coach bag that you can barely afford, you'll never buy another black tote again!" I haven't gotten into house stuff yet, as we're still academic nomads, but I can't wait for the day!
Congrats on moving out of your mom's house. It's such an exciting, big step!
@amaryllis Thanks!! I had kind of considered staying wtih my parents a bit longer thinking....if we get engaged... you know? But then I realized even if we did get engaged I still wouldn't want to move into his house, it's two hours from work and it's too far from my family. I decided I'd rather not put my life on hold while waiting. So glad I did!
Also I don't really know what it is about Paula Dean, it's just like I roam around the Wal*Mart cooking section and her face screams at me telling me she's got a french rolling pin I should try out. I get so tempted and then I realize that it would be much better to buy the Wilton pastry rolling pin that's sitting right next to it being quiet and unassuming, demanding nothing of me.
I go through this, too! I would wander through Target and look for kitchen plates and appliances that I wanted. When I was visiting my SO last month, we spent an hour going through different department stores, picking out our future silverware and plates. I decided that it wasn't a bad thing, since he was the one that initiated it! :-) We've talked about registering, and I joked with him that since he hates shopping so much, I could take care of this one. He laughed and said, "Yeah, right."
i think like that, especially when it comes down to my cooking utensils. FI and I didnt register so we had to pick out everything ourselves. I fell in love with this hard anodized cooking set that was like $1000 and had to have it, FI went out and bought some store brand red themes pots and pans. Theyre nice, but how am I supposed to make all my good recipes on cheap utensils? I didnt let him but knives though, I spent a pretty penny on them at Bed, Bath and Beyond and it was the best decision, ever.
HAHAHA it's nice to see I'm not the only one obsessing about registries and swooning over kitchenaid mixers, lol. My FMIL and FI and I went to Target the other night, and she and I were SO excited....FI just shook his head as we went down the aisles.....LMBO.
I decided I'd rather not put my life on hold while waiting. So glad I did!
Great way to think!
I have found myself thinking this way lately. I don’t need to buy too nice of things because I can register for the really good stuff.
Too funny! I really enjoyed reading your post!
Yesterday, I was in Barnes and Noble and having a similar convo in my head about paying $10 for a bridal hair magazine. In the end, I captured the picture of the style I wanted with my phone:-) That ended that convo!
Yes, totally! I refused to buy my own kitchen aid stand mixer for many years. Finally got it at my shower!
I think this all the time! Everytime I need to buy something for the kitchen I think how I could get a nicer version at a shower or as a wedding gift. It has kept me from buying things too.
My BF wants to get married in vegas and I'm not sure what kind of reception if any we would have after so maybe no registry for my anyways...so I guess I might have to buy it myself with the money we save from paying for a wedding. I told him I might do a vegas wedding but won't make any decisions till after we are engaged.
LOL so funny you should mention this. We have tableware that we absolutely hate and SO was complaining about it the other night. I told him that it wasn't at the top of our list to replace but we could ask for new ones as gifts when we got married. He thought it was a brilliant idea

So I moved out of my parents this weekend!
I was at WalMart picking up some last minute stuff (ice tea pitcher=high priority) and out of no where Paula Dean, that bitch, she cried out to me. 'Hey! Ms Ecualyptus!! You need knives, you don't have any and I know how thrilled you are about my copper bottom pots that your mom bought you. You totally need a good set of knives since you love to cook and check out my nice red handled mid range knives that would look lovely on your counter. '
Now I know that they're not very expensive or that great but they're looking a heck of a lot nicer than the farberware knives. Of course twice as much. I'm having serious debates with myself in the middle of Wal*Mart and I can't help but think. 'I do LOVE to cook and good knives make everything so nice. BUT If I get cheap farberware knives now, next year I can just register for knives that are so much nicer than Paula Deans knives. You know? The kind of knives that last as long as a marriage if we get engaged...and save myself $50"
I left Paula Dean and her "hey ya'll's" and promises of tradition and legacy in the form of mid range cookery products in the Wal*Mart aisle and decided to sit on it for a few more weeks before deciding.
But anyway, does anyone else have these thoughts?
