Haha!! I agree about the affordable housing, but there are genuine people in this town. You just have to find them and hold on for dear life.
haha, true. there are good ones, they're just hard to find. :) we should have an LA bee meetup sometime!
I've been tired of LA since I got here (what...11 years ago now ...sigh)! I'm still stuck for a couple more years until my husband finishes grad school. Meeting up could be fun...particularly with other people tired of LA! :)
I dont live in LA but I do live in Long Beach and I know I would never move outside of Southern California. There are places that seem nice to move to but all our family is here and I cant stand being in cold weather or EXTREMELY hot weather.
Ha ha! I have only lived here for 1.5 years. I love some things about it (weather), but I do find the housing situation extremely depressing. I also hate being away from my friends and family. Looks like I'll be here for at least another 4 years though...
I LOVE LA! Where else can you find such a melting pot of cultures and life-styles? We've got everything under the sun! ;)
True, housing CAN be crazy in certain areas, but affordable nooks exist! Genuine people are out there and all over the place... I know it can be hard - but nice folks are out there!
same here!! i love the weather, but the cost of living is crazy...
hubby and I actually had a talk about moving home once we were ready to start a family.
I grew up in Pasadena. Moved to Oregon when I was 19. I really miss my friends and family, and the fact that there is always something to do. But how people manage to love on their own down there I'll never know. My Dad, sister (23 yrs) and brother (20 yrs) still live down there. There's no way my bro and sis could live on their own. Here I can lived on my own and not worry about it. Oh, and we don't have sales tax. TeeHee!
I live in StL and there are things I miss about LA!
I miss how much diversity there is. In StL, people are not open minded. At all. It's quite sad
'Scuse me, but who said there were no genuine people in Los Angeles? :) Just because we're outnumbered? ;)
I would love an LA meet-up. I've been wondering why there haven't seemed to be any!
And I'd have to say I'm not with the majority... I used to love the weather here, but it's just too damn HOT! After living this summer without air conditioning I am SO over it! Not that I would ever leave, though... except for the traffic, I love everything else. ;)
And thank goodness for that! ;) I just hope the mudslides aren't too bad this year. :(
I'd L-O-V-E to get out of this town. I moved here intending to stay for 5 years (that was 10 years ago) and now I'm married to a local boy, so we've agreed to stick it out until our first born starts school. We can barely afford to rent a nice place to live, let alone pay for private school. There was an LA meetup awhile back, but I couldn't attend. Let's do it again!
yeah, I grew up here so I think it's just time for a change. Once the economy turns around a bit, we might start looking at places in CO. We'll see. For now though, I do appreciate all the good parts of LA - melting pot and beaches galore! And rain today - finally!
I love Los Angeles, but my fiancee can't stand it. We both moved here for college (me from rural Ohio and him from San Diego) and talk about leaving but all our friends are here. We know it'll be tough to ever afford a house, especially since he's been laid off since April, but I love my job and don't want to leave.
I think I got a big of a reprieve when he started back in school to get a second bachelor's degree. Maybe when he gets a job, things will start to look up.
Sometimes LA definitely drives me crazy! And yes, it's very hard to find genuine people in LA, but they're out there. I think what makes LA hard sometimes is that you have to really look for what you want - it's just not as easy to find it as in other cities. But I agree with ejs4y8 - so much more diversity...in people, in food, etc. Where else can you find great sushi and great great tacos within blocks from each other! : )
I love living here!!! I moved here when I was 9 and then moved to Orange County for college. I also lived in DC, the Netherlands, Russia and Daytona Beach for periods of time and I have to say I can't imagine living anywhere else, (well, except the netherlands). yes housing is expensive but the way I look at it is you're not just paying for the house, you're paying for the location. Sure you can get a house 3 times as big for the same amount of money in Oklahoma, (no offense to anyfrom from Oklahoma), but then at the end of the day you're in Oklahoma.
I love the diversity LA offers. My college BF was from a large city in Texas and told me that until he came to CA he had never met a Jewish person before. And I love that we have access to whatever we want here. And of course I love the weather, (except today....i hope it stops raining soon). I love that wearing a scarf and hat is a fashion choice and not a necessity. :-)
And there are tons of genuine, wonderful people here, (and most of them are not in the industry).
@MissE -I've been living on my own in LA since I was 21. It's possible.
With FH from SF & me from Hawaii, we're SOOOOO tired of LA - and we've been here for 10 years! (for the record, we are die-hard ND Irish & SF Giants & 49er fans, so living in such close proximity to Raider Nation, Dodger "bums", & Trojans grates on my nerves) But, like betagrl said, "you gotta hold onto [the genuine people] for dear life"...our friends are the only thing that make this place enjoyable (well, I guess his job in the industry & my students are a part of it, too)!
I'd totally be into a LA bee meeting! The more genuine people you get to know in LA, the better!
Seems like the people who dislike LA the most are the people who aren't originally from here... which I will interpret as being just an act! Because you have less holding you here than us natives do, but you're still here! ;) Embrace it! You'll like LA more when you don't pretend not to. ;) hahaa... sorry, long day! :)
I love LA too! There is so much to do, so many things to try, awesome food everywhere for every budget! Yes, the housing prices suck and the traffic is horrendous, but you get what you pay for! Of course you can go to BFE and get a nice house for $150K, but the area would not have near the amount of culture, fun, and diversity that LA offers.
I can empathize on both sides here, I'm from Northern Cal and am living in LA (the valley.. oh yeah). There are things I love about LA - the warmth, the food, how any and every store is within 20 minutes, the museums, the movies, the beaches.. But then again, I hate the traffic, the smog, the race wars, the price of rent, police helicopters hovering above my neighborhood.. so on and so forth!! I try and think of the good when I'm irritated by the bad, for instance, two of my plans last weekend got ruined by being stuck on the 101 for over an hour!! Sigh!!
Anyways, I am SO down for an LA bee meet up!! I was just complaining to my mom last night that I wish had a friend or two planning a wedding, it would be really fun to pal around with some gals, go to bridal shows, etc. Most of my gal friends are up North so even though the Fi is great, I miss female interaction!!
i'm moving to LA soon (in the next month) and would be new in town, so a meet-up would definitely be cool!
I love LA. I moved away for two and a half years to go to school and I couldn't stand not being at home. The culture and diversity here is a rare find unless you live in say NY or Chicago.
Technically I live just outside of true "LA" (Torrance, Southbay) but I could never imagine living anywhere else. I'm 5 minutes from the beach, don't have to deal with the smog or much traffic, and am 20 minutes away from downtown.. The only other place I could actually imagine living is San Diego which isn't really all that different :p
So if we did a meet up where would be convenient?? Any valley girls? Downtown LA? Hollywood? South bay?
I'd vote for downtown since it's pretty central to most people who are "in"/near LA. Also the easiest place for most people to get to by public transit. :)
I'm in Pasadena so I would definitely meet in SGV, downtown, or the Valley. ;)
Hey I just set up a poll in another post so that might help us figure out where to meet. ;) http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/la-meet-up
I grew up in LA and LOVE LA! I hate the traffic and ridiculous housing, but you can't beat the diversity (people, food, things to do -- bars, restaurants, beaches, mountains, deserts!), and the weather! I don't think I could ever live anywhere else -- except maybe San Diego/La Jolla (FI and I fantasize about moving there all the time). Totally different and so beautiful. I've lived in Boston, San Francisco, and San Diego and I keep coming back to LA!
