I live in NJ and I am a teacher so I always have a snow day. FI works for a national company that has branches around the country and world (dont want to say what it is). His office NEVER CLOSES. EVER. During Hurricane Sandy, he got to leave at 2 pm the day it hit, and was back in the office at 8 am. They had no power. And he still had to work for almost a week with no power in the office.
So he is currently at work in this snow storm (where we are getting 14 inches) and he works 45 minutes away. This morning it took him 2 hours to get there, and he texted me to tell me it was the worst driving conditions he has ever driven in. Did I mention he has to stay there til 6 pm tonight, even though he has NO customers and isn’t doing anything? Did I mention all other bosses in the area closed their office? OR told them to go to a branch closer to their homes (there is one 10 minutes from here)? But no – let’s make FI drive 45 minutes to work for no reason in the ice/snow/blizzard conditions? Cool!
This is ridiculous. I am so stressed out I can’t even enjoy my snow day. I am just sitting here getting cranky texts from FI & worrying about how on earth he is going to get home later. Anyone with me?

Yes! We’re near Raleigh, NC. DH is an EMT, and he has been working since yesterday morning and he’s working until 8 tonight. He’s probably just going to stay at work tonight since he has to go back in the morning. I’d rather him have to drive less, even though if miss him and really want him home.
I worry because the roads are so slick and icy, and their ambulances don’t have chains or anything like that. I hate that he has to go out in this weather 🙁

@weatherbug: FUCK YES! Does your husband stay in one location once he’s there? I hope so. Mine is an HVAC technician so he’s on the road all day driving from one house to another in this blizzard. I’m scared to death.

We are both working from home today, but I am pregnant and due in 10 days so baby better stay put for now!

I’m in Southern NJ and my office is an hour away in PA on a clear day. They are open today!!! I told them there’s no chance and I had previously driven in the other snow storms and the ice storm we had a week ago. This was my line.
FI went to work (electrician) and his drive right now is usually 30 minutes. After an hour and a half, he still wasnt there. The drive home is scaring me worse now though with the ice coming down 🙁

My SO drives all day and some times has to drive through rural mountain areas to get to isolated towns. I’m always afraid he’s going to get suck or crash! He keeps extra clothes, food, and water with him though so that makes me feel a little better.

@Aquaria: Yes, he is the branch manager so he stays in one location. Its so silly because it is attached to their corporate offices, and that is even closed! They just never close the branch. He called all his employees other than assistant manager to stay home, but he doesn’t get to make the call about the actual office (his boss has to). Every other region in this area (other than Jersey) are closed. It’s so silly.
@ElbieKay: AHH, thats my worse nightmare! I will make sure to plan for a summer baby, lol!
@Cory_loves_this_girl: At least he is out there doing an important job that is needed! That would make me feel better if FI could stay somewhere. I told FI to get a hotel down there and expense it to the company, lol!

@ceemarie7: Same here honey, I understand. DH’s customers are all out in the middle of nowhere also. He got stuck twice last week.

YUP! me and my SO drove from Westchester to Manhattan to get to work metro north has 1-2hour delays and we weren’t about to deal with those problems … the roads are horrible we couldn’t see 20 feet ahead and the roads even in Manhattan are bad, it took us 2hrs to get to work .. I DO NOT plan on staying the entire day … just ridiculous! be safe everyone

@weatherbug: That is crazy. My job in the city never closes and is psycho about people coming in during the worst conditions. They were actually open the week of Sandy despite everyone being without power – madness, I tell you. However, even they let me work from home today (I also live in NJ with a horrible commute on a normal good weather day so today would be an even bigger joke).
However, DH’s company ALWAYS closes due to weather, so I was shocked that they were open today, but will be closing early at 2 pm. Thankfully he relies on public transit to get to and from work so I don’t have to worry about him driving. I would still rather he be home though!
Your FI’s work sounds nuts though. I don’t think I could work for a company like that! :/

@weatherbug: my job let us out at 10am. DH is at work until 430. they may let him out at 330. gee how nice of them! im also in NJ and the roads, including highways, are awful. im not THAT worried bc hes driving a huge pickup truck, but still, i would feel more at ease with him home. his company is ridiculous for being open. but they too were open during hurricane sandy, minus 1 day when they lost power.

@weatherbug: Yeah, that helps, but not when it’s for stupid calls where people just need a bandaid or something. Ugh!
Luckily, they aren’t letting them go lights and sirens right now. Basically, they get to you when they get to you.

Sorry to threadjack, but on a related note:
Does anyone know if NYC schools will be getting out early today? I was surprised that they were open!

I’m worried about getting home and my DH getting home! My stupid boss told me I couldnt work from home and if I didn’t come in I would have to use a vacation day. I can do my job 100% from home. I am so annoyed. I feel like I should fight this.

FI is on a triple (36 hours) at work, he went in yesterday morning and gets out tonight. He’s a fire fighter paramedic. I’m not so concerned with him in the fire truck, but he’s the paramedic this week, so he will have to get into an ambulance with another crew, and I’m always concerned with how safely people are driving the ambulance. Some people are idiots.
And like @Cory_loves_this_girl mentioned, it pisses me off to no end when people call 911 in this weather when they REALLY don’t need a hospital let alone an ambulance! I’m a medic myself and it’s astounding the reasons people call for an ambulance in weather like this.
