If you aren't happy, its only going to get worse. Start making calls. NYC is a big place and I'm sure you can find someone that will be able to cater your wedding. Good luck!
you're right of course TexasM. I just found the contract and we'd lose $3,000 if we let our caterer go now. that's a big chunk o' change, probably what we're fuming over in all the overages.... then again, how much is peace of mind worth? I dunno tho'. that's a lotta cash to lose right now; any time, you know?
Do you have good friends that can get all the rental stuff he is now charging you extra to bring?
Thats tough....$3000 is a lot to lose. But you might be spending more than that on all his extras and forgotten charges that you might as well take it elsewhere. If you're from NY and he's from NY, just tell him that this is crap and you won't put it with it. Go to him, where ever he is, and go through each thing and set him straight. This is NY and we don;t take this kind of bull**!! From one NYer to another! And if you feel funny about saying all this, tell your man to do so or a friend or a cousin, but don;t allow for it.
texas meredith said, we do have a lot of caterers, you can take your business elsewhere worse case scenerio.

I wrote about my caterer last night, but I feel worse tonight, so here goes. Here's the thing -- we want to fire our caterers but don't know how much of the deposit we'll get back OR if we'll find another one. Has anyone ever done this?
He's overcharging us on everything... and admitting it, telling us straight out that it's how he makes a living, but it's beyond belief. He'll take a $12 rental tablecloth and charge us $35 for each and a 70 cent glass or fork (can't remember now) and put that at $1.15. You ladies know how that adds up when you've got 85 people to seat and feed. The bar bill was the last straw tonight for FI. Caterer was at $1400 but we thought we cut back with a signature cocktail and red and white sangrias and a few mid-shelf alcoholic beverages, one imported beer-one American light, very reasonable red and white wines and a sparkling white for champagne...and the usual soft drinks, juices and mixers and garnishes. and the NEW AND IMPROVED bill came in at $1450! It went up, after I followed all the magazine guides on budget bars!
But the last straw (no pun intended) for me was the wedding cake. I agreed to a dummie cake to keep the cost down -- only the top layer is real, but the outside of the whole thing is real and gorgeous and very decorated... and there's a yummy sheet cake in the back that they'll cut from. If that isn't bad enough, I just noticed how tiny his three layers are -- 12 inches for the bottom, 9 for the middle and 6 for the top. Is that small or is it just me? And for that, and cardboard for the two bottom layers !!! they want $405. Am I going crazy?
I don't know what to do.
