I get them frequently and after the first year, I have no longer gotten symptoms until the kidney pain.

Same history for me! I used to get frequent UTIs with burning urination, one time got a kidney infection… eventually, the burning symptom stopped showing up even when I definitely had a UTI (abdomen/flank pain; urgent, frequent urination; dark, smelly and cloudy urine; usually confirmed by urine test).

I literally just went through this 2 weeks ago. I have had a UTI before and know the symptoms. I was having somewhat severe on and off abdominal pain and ended up going to the ER. I thought it could be appendicitis, although I started getting slight pains on my left side, too. It was primarily my right side and spread from lower abdomen to my back/rib area. They ran tests and a CT, ended up being a severe UTI, I had zero of the regular symptoms.

Just ended my antibiotics on Friday. I haven’t had anymore side/abdominal pain, but around day 5 of antibiotics I started having normal UTI symptoms. Went away again around day 7. It completely freaked me out, but it does happen. You are not alone! Thank goodness they figured it out, the last thing you want is a full blown kidney infection.

Yes. I had several UTIs over the course of 14 months and the only way I ever knew was when my kidney started to hurt. It turned out the strain of bacteria causing my UTIs was resistant to Cipro so if you continue to have symptoms ask for further testing because you might need a different antiobiotic. Rest up and feel better! It’s the woooorrst.

I had kidney infections all throughout my childhood and so I no longer feel ANY symptoms of a UTI until it hits my kidneys. It’s really common.

What I did was get the culture sticks online and test myself often when I feel a little “off”.

I just went through those same symptoms almost a year ago. Back pain and frequent urination but I didn’t have it treated nearly soon enough like you did. I wound up with regular visits to a urologist and a new diagnosis of IC after wiping out the infection. Any kind of issues down there are always worth checking out pronto. For some reason the typical symptoms don’t always show up. Glad you had it taken care of!

JackiBean:  Where do you find the culture sticks online? I never realized you could buy them and test yourself!

Try that site. My mom usually buys them and sends them to me since she’s way more concerned than I am (yes, I am an adult).

The only problem is that I have no idea how to read if I have an infection or not. Usually if there is an abnormal amount of protein or other colors that are outside the range of normal, I go in to see the doctor. If all the colors are normal, I don’t bother.

So far, I’ve caught two infections and one false alarm in 3 years this way, so I’m pretty confident in my ghetto system.

I usually only feel the back pain and urge to go.  I’ve suffered with them for years and I will tell my urologist and 99.9% I’m right.  I actually just got done with a cycle of antibiotics on Monday.  Hope you feel better soon!
