We had new siding put on our small house this spring- it was $6000. Did you get several estimates?

RedHeadKel:  Unfortunately, I feel like lots of stuff costs $30K these days. New kitchen? $30K (and we have a small kitchen). New driveway, landscaping, stacked stone walls? $30K. Oh Lord. I’m just trying not to scratch the cupboards and kill the plants. Freaking crazy!

Yup, we got an estimate to paint the exterior of our house and it ranged from 7-9k.  This is why we’ve lost almost every weekend to working on the house.  Our blood sweat and tears plus 1k max in material for repair and paint vs 7-9k.  Never mind just building the enclosed back porch we want which was 40k estimate.  Luckily most the windows are new, but 2 did need replacing and to do the work ourselves and just buy the window is still about 500 a piece.

RedHeadKel:  I’m with you! We are doing most all of our labor ourselves but even the costs for materials alone is sooo much. I should just sign my paycheck over to Home Depot 🙂

Also, thank God for YouTube. You can probably learn how to install your own siding on there haha.

RedHeadKel:  I know our house window’s alone are going to run us in the $5K to 10K range.   We tend to do our house projects in smaller blocks so we can manage them a bit better.

We just redid the siding soon our house. Just finished late last night. We did it ourselves and it cost us about $1500. We got quotes of ten grand for our tiny place so DH took some time off and we did it because it had to be done. I would like to replace a few Windows but the cost of window is ridiculous, so next year hopefully.

RedHeadKel:  It totally sucks being a home owner sometimes!!!  Some maybe already thought about advice is as follows:  the initial estimate CAN be changed/lowered/bartered on…promise.  We had full window replacement in our home, and spent WEEKS meeting with a ton of reputable window companies.  We had it narrowed down to 2, and shamelessly (or intelligently) pinned them against one another.  IF they wanted OUR business, we needed it to be a price we were comfortable spending (within reason for the service).  The company we chose went from 12K on the first quote down to 6K for 10 (including a large picture window) replacements!

Still a lot of money, yes!  But, I am glad we did not settle, and I never will again.

Changing things on or in a house will cost you, but it does not need to break you either!!!  Keep loooking 🙂

definately get more than 1 estimate.  he might be upcharging since he is already on site and you will pay him more for convenience.  i got 3 estimates recently for powerwashing my house and deck, staining and sealing the deck, and washing all windows.  first estimate was $900, next 2 were in $400 range.  the second guy, i thought could have been low, but when the 3rd guy said same price, i knew 1st guy was very high.

RedHeadKel:  you never know, I may be coming to MN to pick up my kitchen cabinets. (considering idea cabinets) We’ll just swing by and knock out that siding while we are there 😉
