Didn't they do all that for you at the car dealer? I leased back in March and they did all that for me....renewed my tag for me too.
I've leased a few cars back in my 20's (Honda Civics, too!!) and I never had to do any of this. I simply paid the 1st payment, plus tax and tags. The dealer should do everything for you. They do this all the time!
@Kanebaby: NOPE - that's just it...we didn't have to pay anything when we went in. Our first payment will be next month - but I didn't know about tax - which we'll probably have to pay at the bmv. grrr. i wish they were open today! i'm so impatient! lol
@JuneBride_26June2010: I've never heard of anything such as this. I've always simply dealt with a car dealer in both leases and purchases. And the fact that the dealer couldn't tell you exactly what to expect and what to do is very strange. I just bought my new car in June and didn't pay my first payment and taxes until July, but never had to deal with the DMV. I don't get it. Is it possible this is a different state law? Each state must be different.
I lease and the dealer takes care of everything. We don't pay the state, Honda does, and we pay Honda. Technically, they hold the title on the car.
i think it is a different state law...i just spoke with a friend here at work who just leased her 3rd car - and she said that when she went to register/transfer her old registration to the new car - yes, she had to pay taxes at the BMV as well as the transfer fee for the reg. from one car to another and paid around $350. She just did this like last month. she said it was the same situation where the dealer didn't include the taxes in the leasing information. apparantly it must be something that they don't do here in indiana.
I know that - for example - when you buy a used car and the taxes were NOT included that you have to pay them at time of registration because I remember one time a while back, when I was at the BMV a woman got a big shock of how much the taxes where that she had to pay on her car then and there when she was trying to register her car, as she said she hadn't paid the taxes when she bought the car from this other person. Gotta love gov't and how they will get your $$ any way they can!
Well, you may not have to pay anything to get the car but all that should be included in the lease. I didn't pay anything when i leased mine either but they transferred the tag and included it on the cost. They estimated it then sent me a refund for the overage.
yes, you havce to pay state sales tax on the value of the car, at least in MD you do in order to get is registered

ok - so we got rid of my husband's car the other night (traded it in) and leased an awesome 2010 Honda Civic (which i'm LOVING!)...question is - and I can't call the BMV today as they are closed on Mondays ... i know that it shouldn't be too expensive, if anything at all to transfer the registration from his old car into the new car - but is there a tax on leasing that one would have to pay to the state?
I'm sure it's also different from state to state - but just to give me an idea?...
they weren't too sure at the dealership - they said there'll probably be some sort of tax - but they weren't for sure - but I'm curious how many of you out there have done this before?
luckily we got a 0 due at signing and our first payment isn't due until the 15th next month - so we actually didn't have to pay his car payment this month (so i put that money straight into savings since it was already budgeted) - and obviously we can use that for the registration stuff...but it'd be nice if we can use that to pay something else off...but obviously i won't touch it (if we can) til after we go to the bmv...
