I’d ask if the buyer is willing to list it buy it now on ebay for you, then pay with paypal.  that is the safest way.  (you can offer to pay listing fees)

@Tootsietails:  Definitely ask if they are comfortable. I used Gumtree when I lived in Australia, and I currently use Kijiji which is the Canadian equivalent. I would never sell something on Kijiji that wasn’t picked up or purchased in person. +1 to the Bee who recommended asking them to list on eBay.

To not sound cheesy.. just explain your situation. You are a bride and they have the perfect dress, basically what you wrote here. Ask if they are comfortable selling and shipping and what the additional cost would be for shipping (obviously they would expect you to cover that). Maybe consider asking them to communicate via phone so they know you are a real person. You can also have the list it on eBay while you are on the phone so you can snap it up immediately.

Anyone that would know anyting about buying-selling online whould know that you’re doing the opposite of scamming.

I’d be honest and say:

I love that dress and want to buy it.  However, I live in the US and cannot pick it up.  I’m wondering if you’re willing to put it on e-bay for me with buy it now.  I’ll pay for the listing fees, you can add them to the price.  I would feel better about the transaction going through ebay.

Don’t know about Gumtree, but I’m glad you found the right dress!
