I just found what I think might be the dress (Augusta Jones Jocelyn) at Macy’s this past weekend. One of my concerns buying it there though is that most reviews of their alterations people seem pretty awful, but the reviews are also from before 2010. Has anyone purchased their dress and gotten it altered there recently? I suppose my other option would be to hope A L’amour in Lake Zurich (the only other place I can find with Augusta Jones) has this dress, but their reviews are almost as bad!

I have not gotten my dress altered at Macys but I just had an awesome experience with Grace Bridal in Lakeview/Wrigelyville. I HIGHLY recommend her. And her prices are very reasonable.

I am getting mine altered through Crafty Broads. They are great and affordable. I think all the “authorities” say to not get the dress altered at the purchase place to save money.

The consultant at Macy’s quoted me $150 for the hem (lace dress with intricate pattern on the bottom) and $100 for the bustle. That seemed high to me but I’m worried about getting this particular style hemmed by just anyone since the lace at the bottom is so special. At Macy’s they suggested ordering the dress with the hem not even attached – is that something outside seamstresses can deal with?

I don’t have personal experience, but I had two friends purchase their dress and have it altered at Macy’s on State last summer. Both had good experiences, no complaints. At least previously (when I shopped there and for both of these gals), there was a flat fee of $250 for alterations. Evidently that’s changed.
Re: the hem, I think the lace hem is pretty standard these days. The manufacturers make the dresses so that the hem can be adjusted by readjusting the lace underneath. If you look closely on the bottom of the dress, you can see where the lace is sewn in for the hem; this has to be undone and re-sewn to length (a step that would be eliminated if you ordered it un-attached). My seamstress (Mary Catomy in the northern burbs) handled this on my dress just fine. She knew immediately what to do.
Hope this helps. Good luck!
