I don't have a baby nor am I TTC, but I thought I"d post it here rather than in the Intimacy boards because I want to know whether any of you got pregnant while on the pill, and whether it was because you missed a day?
DH and I definitely don't want a baby now, and I've been on the pill (and haven't missed a day for 3 months!). We don't use condoms so I just want comforting that I won't get pregnant!!!
Yup. I was almost 19, on the pill for 3 complete bc packs and I got pregnant. Took those pills like clockwork. Don't ask me what went wrong. I wasn't on any meds that would interfere with it. My Dr. said sex after a month was fine and we decided to wait a little longer to be safe. So much for that. I'm sure that I'm pretty much the exception to the rule.
But, we have a beautiful daughter and then had 3 more handsome boys and we're so thrilled.
Ah... sorry to do this to you... but I've gotten pregnant on the pill twice. >_< The first one ended up as a miscarriage. I'm so anal too, so I never miss a day! We're using the pill and condoms now, b'cuz we really can't afford another child just yet.
Oh no :( :(
What can I do, then???? We don't like condoms, (TMI, don't read ahead!!! .......... i get quite sore if DH wears them) but I dont want to get pregnant :( :( :(
I've been on the pill for over seven years and have never come close to being pregnant. :) We don't use any other type of protection either.
It's very rare, so says my gyno! I think you'll find that many many more women do NOT get pregnant while religiously taking the pill. My high school best friend is allergic to latex and all the pills she tried messed up her body, so they use the "pull-out" method. They haven't gotten pregnant yet, and it's been 6 years.
@mrsBtoBee: I've been on the pill for almost 7 years and sexually active with my now FI the whole time.
I am pretty good about taking it, but have definitely missed a day and taken 2 the next day or been on antibiotics while taking it etc. We have never used an additional form or protection with the pill. I also get sore & irritated with condoms.
I have never gotten pregnant and my period has never been late.
I've switched brands a few times and have never had any issues.
The pill is 99.9% effective that means there is a 0.1% chance that you will get pregnant on it. Meaning 1/1000 women will get pregnant on the pill.
By asking your question the way you did, you are asking people who DID get pregnant while on the pill to respond (rather than those who didn't).
the pill is 99% effective if you take it correctly.
@yoori:twice!? wow...you should play the lotto! haha
@yoori: I have a friend who got pregnant on the pill and she had been taking it for over a year!! my mother got preg. with me when she had an IUD. I have been on the pill on and off for years and have never gotten preggers.
@KatNYC2011: You are right - my question made it easier for those 0.1% cases to raise their hands :)
But as in everything in life, I like to play it safe!!! But I think I'll carry on with the pill then, and just pray that a baby will come when a baby needs to come :P
@mrsBtoBee: Definitely play it safe. I have gotten MUCH better about taking the pill religiously and not having sex while on antibiotics until after my period and starting my next pack of pills, but in college I was very lax with the pill taking.
I'd take them every day, but often at different times of day (usually in the evening) or first thing the next morning.
I still don't have a specific time of day I take it, I just take my pill every night right before bed.
Now that I'm basically 8 months out from my wedding I'm being SUPER careful, because now is DEFINITELY not the time for a baby.
There's quite a variety of birth control options- talk to your gyno! There's a patch, a shot, the nuvaring, that little t shaped things (I forget what it's called but the gyno places it up by your cervix- it's a long term thing).
A lot of the other options are just as effective or nearly just as effective. But, with anything... there's always the outliers who will get pregnant, even with perfect use. If you've very concerned it's best to do a hormonal birth control and a barrier method (maybe you could get fitted for a diaphram?)
I got pregant while on the pill, but it ended up in miscarriage. But, I was taking antibiotics at the time, so I know what went wrong.
I switched to Nuvaring for 3 reasons:
@KatNYC2011: fingers crossed you'll make it through the wedding looking slim and with a tiny waist ;)!
@franks.katie: hmmm interesting! i'll do some research on that :)
My brother always tells his kids that the ONLY 100% sure fire form of birth control iis abstinence. Lol!
If you're really afraid of getting pregnant while on the pill and you don't like condoms, you can always ask your Dr. for a diaphragm or you can use spermicidals.
Adding that I love the Nuvaring! I'm on it now and so far, so good (knock wood).
I've been using the pill for over 6 years now and have not gotten pregnant. I take it absolutely religiously, same time every day and have never missed a day.
You can get pregnant with even perfect pill usage, but it's very rare. There's nothing out there that is foolproof; even tubal ligations and vasectomies have been known to fail.
I got pregnant while on the pill, but I missed a few. Actually, I think I probably missed five in a row. Even then, my ob-gyn was shocked that I was pregnant because of my age (37) and the fact that had been on the pill a while. She said it normally takes most people a few cycles to get pregnant after long-term pill usage.
But before that, I'd been on the pill a very long time and never had an unplanned pregnancy. The two times I did have totally unprotected sex, I did get pregnant the first month, so it's not that I have trouble getting pregnant. I guess I am just very fortunate that the birth control pill works very very well for me.
I got pregnant on the pill. I took it religiously and wasn't on any other medications, so not sure how it worked. That was a few years ago and I miscarried at 5 weeks. I switched birth controls after that and haven't had any issues since. It was a very traumatic experience, but that's a whole other post.
I haven't gotten pregnant on BC. I was on different pills for about 7 years, and I was horrible about taking them. I would never take them at the same time (usually within 4ish hours though, but one or two times a month I would take 2 pills in one day) and I didn't use any backup BC. It was pretty dumb, but I was in high school and college and just didn't think anything bad could ever happen to me. I wasn't having sex very regularly during that time, so I'm sure that helped. I stopped the pill for about a year when I was single, and now I use the Nuvaring, which I LOVE. It is soooo convenient, and unlike the pill, I've had no side effects. I can't praise the nuvaring enough, but you don't really know how it'll be for you until you try it. And like every other type of BC, it is possible to get pregant on it.
I got pregnant while taking the pill perfectly.
At least 1 in 100 women taking the pill perfectly will get pregnant every year. A 1% failure rate is not as small as it seems. Obviously the failure rate goes up a lot more if you are missing pills or not taking them at the same time every day.
Now, we use a spermicidal gel along with a different pill to make sure we are covered!
i was on the pill for almost 9 years and never used a backup method and never got pregnant...
Both my mom and my sister have gotten pregnant while using birth control. My mom was taking the pill (keep in mind this was thirty years ago), and my sister was on the depo shot. I have no idea how accurate either of them were in maintaining their BC schedule, though.
Because of this history, I have always been super paranoid about this. I take the pill, and we use condoms most of the time. Sometimes not, but probably like 85% of the time, we do use a condom.
My FI is also really funny about helping me make sure I remember to take my pill. I have an alarm set on my phone to remind me every morning, and if I am out of the room when the alarm goes off, he will fish the pill pack out my purse and either give it to me or put it somewhere where I won't miss it, like on the stairs that I will have to come down. Team effort!
Yes, and so did my mom with my younger brother, who is now 6! My mom and sister and I all developed ovarian cysts from BC too. Something about our makeup just does not take well to birth control. I can't speak for my mom and how regularly she took hers, but I'd been on mine for 6 years and took it regularly, but when I moved to Texas from Georgia, I drove from Maryland to Georgia, then Georgia to Texas in 2 days. It was like 36 hours of driving in 44 hours or something crazy like that. Anyway, somewhere in there I think I forgot to take my pill. And about a month later, I felt really bad and had weird symptoms and sure enough, I was pregnant.
I was conceived on the pill, a friend conceived on the patch, and my girlfriend conceived on the IUD. I was always nervous when I took the pill so I would be careful if I were you, it can happen with just about any form of birth control.
Yeah, I'm currently preganat and was on the pill for 7 years. Granted I think I got mixed up while traveling one weekend and didn't realize it, so I didn't follow up on the missed dose insturctions.
Not while ON the pill, but the very first month I was off of it. I went off for one month (just because we had been out of town and I missed the window to start it, didn't get to the pharmacy before we left town) and we decided to be careful. One time we weren't careful and BAM! Preggo! :)
Do not believe those stories that the pill "stays in your system" for up to 6 months after stopping it. NOT TRUE WHATSOEVER! And I was on it for 9 years...
I know some, and according to the Guttchmacher Institutes latest stats, 54% of women* seeking abortion became pregnant while using Contraceptives.
Condoms are more risky (higher failure rate) than HBC (which isn't the healthiest thing for you). I did not want to use HBC (hormonal Birth Control) as the World Health Organization has classified them as a Group 1 Carcinogen.
We are not ready for a kid and based on the above as well as our own personal convictions, chose to go with NFP. It's the same thing as Fertility Awareness Method... only we don't use a barrier during fertile times... we use abstinence which is truly the only way to prevent a child. If a method of BC does fail, it can only fail during ovulation... i.e. when you're fertile. By abstaining from sex when fertile... we also abstain from potential babies. We typically are a bit "safer" than we need to be and we find a LOT of benefits from NFP. Especially the benefit of a monthly honeymoon once we hit Stage 3 of my cycle! We work to find other ways to bond and be intimate during the times we can't and studies show NFP couples divorce rate is only at 2%. NFP based Sympto-Thermal Method of Fertility Awareness (i.e. with abstinence) is 99.9+% effective... so the same or higher than HBC. FAM (where a barrier is used) the success rate is that of the barrier used as again, if it fails... you're using it when you know that if it fails pregnancy may happen.
Might be worth a look into. We love it and have used it VERY successfully :) (as have MANY others here!)
*American Statistic - just noticed you're in the UK.
I didn't and took BC for 10 years! (And like you and the PP said- the wording of this question will cause it to be answered by more people who DID get pregnant on the pill, even though they are in the minority.)
Two things, one (sorry, but you asked!) I would recommend him pulling out even if you are on the pill. Not the "neatest" thing but definitely better than the sperm being inside of you. YOu will be less likely to get pregnant if there is less sperm inside of you. (Yes, I know that it is not guaranteed, but to me, it made more sense to also pull out when I was on birth control.)
And two, definitely consider lube with condoms. SOME condoms say you can put it on the inside and outside of the condom to help both parties (lol), but DEFINITELY try it on the outside, for you. Latex can be very drying.
A friend of mine did, but she had missed a few. My aunt actually has 3 kids, all of which were conceived while she was on the pill.
Long story short: Yes it can happen, you want to be careful.
I got pregnant while taking the pill....I was on it for about 6 years and I am very OCD about taking it and not sure what happened, but I got pregnant and I have a beautiful girl to show for it and thinking back I wouldn't change a thing I love her so much....funny how I am now off the pill and TTC and nothing yet.
I've never gotten pregnant on the pill (or any other form of birth control), and don't know anyone who has. I have heard stories of friends of friends who have, though.
NUVARING. As long as you put the reminders to switch it out into your calendar, you never have to worry about missing a pill. 95% of my friends with boyfriends/husbands are on the pill or some kind of HBC, and no one's gotten pregnant yet.
I've never gotten pregnant, but I did want to agree with @LoveHappy: about using condoms and lube. The lubricant will really make all the difference as latex condoms can be very drying. Also, it could be that you have some sort of minor allergy to latex, which can be remedied by utilizing condoms made of other materials. I'm just too much of a nervous nelly to not have two defenders guarding the goal :-)
Just wanted to echo KLP to say that I am SO so so SOOO on board with fertility awareness and will NEVER use a hormonal form of birth control again. I highly second the reccomendation!
I also wanted to point out that it was explained to me once by an RN that the 99% efficacy of BCPs is a little misleading. What that's really saying is that 1% of women are simply incompatible with BC -- it doesn't work for them. It's not saying that 1 out of every 100 times you're looking at a potential pregnancy, it could happen. So if you are someone who has gotten pregnant while taking the pill correctly, then the pill does not and never will work for you. Your chances of getting pregnant are going to be equal what they would be off the pill. Conversely, if you have been using BCPs for years and years with no backup method and have never gotten pregnant, you won't suddenly get pregnant based on that off-chance of 1%, if you continue to take the pills correctly.
Again, that's just how it was explained to me by one nurse... so I can't say with total certainty that it's the absolute truth. Bottom line is BCPs can and will fail some women and there are better ways to prevent pregnancy, if you ask me!! :D
I have been on hormonal BC for the entire relationship with my husband except for 6 months and I have never had a scare with it. I think that some people's bodies do not work as well with it as others. I have heard that being overweight can decrease the effectiveness.
1st child born when I was using NFP-I had a double "peak" for temperature-thought I was safe after the 1st peak.
2nd child born -got pregnant with an IUD with Progesterone. Only 2 babies born with that IUD in OB's career-mine was #2
It was tough -but things worked out, and I wouldn't change them for the world!!! :D
