I actually picked up my appraisal last week… I have a moissy center with diamond sidestones.  The entire set was appraised for more than 3x of what I paid for it.  I know they’re inflated, but I was happy!

I did for a couple of reasons, but the main one is that my bands (e-ring and 2 wedding) all have diamond sidestones.  So if something were to happen, I wouldn’t be too thrilled to dish out the same amount of money to replace my original set.  I hope to get it insured this week!

Just an FYI: the appraisal price shouldn’t be a guide for how much you’d get if you sold it, but rather the amount you’d get back if you had it insured then lost it.

Everyone loves to think the jewellery they have is valuable, maybe even more valuable than they dared believe. The only glitch to having an inflated appraisal is the fact that you’ll pay more for the insurance because of it.

The number on an appraisal, regardless of whether the ring is a diamond or other gemstone, has virtually no relation to the resale value. In almost all cases, a person would never be able to sell their ring for anywhere near the amount they paid.

The value on an appraisal is the amount it would take to replace your ring if you lost or damaged it. That amount includes the normally ridiculous profit margins most jewelers charge, thus most rings are appraised for MUCH higher than what one paid. The appraisal is the amount that should be used for insurance purposes, and even then, most insurance companies will no longer cut someone a check in the case of loss; they normally now pay for the replacement directly to the jeweler instead.

All that said, however, it is a good idea to get appraised and insure anything which you could not easily afford to replace, so most engagement rings should be appraised and insured no matter what stone they hold.
