One of our friends recently had a security system installed in their townhouse. We would like to do the same, but we were wondering what our options are as far as wireless systems (since we obviously can’t use a hardwired system) and whether or not your landlord was okay with it. We would have to give them the code, because they come in to perform routine maintenance (changing smoke detector batteries, heating filters, etc.)

@MrsEdamame: why couldn’t you use a hardwired system? Talk to your landlord. I bet if it was installed well, it would be a rental asset.

Even before asking your landlord, I’d check to see what your lease says. Your landlord will likely say yes – after all, it will be attractive to future tenants. But, the lease may state that any improvements made can not be taken with you when you leave. So, if you do install, be prepared to leave it behind if the lease says something like that. Your landlord will likely say yes knowing that that you can’t take it with you.

@MrsEdamame: Our last apartment actually had a security system installed for every unit. We only really used it when we were out of town for multiple days. Otherwise, we just locked up.

@Krises: Good point. I’ll consult the lease before I contact the office!

Our apartment came with a security system. But I would check with your landlord to see what they are ok with you installing.
