@CorgiTales:Oh yea. I've been through it. I've yo-yo'd for so long. I've been chunky pretty much all my life. I was on WW's before and lost a bit of weight but I just went back to eating whatever the hell I wanted. I love not-good-for-me-food, chinese is probably my BIGGEST weakness. I LOVE IT. I could honestly eat it everyday. Although I never have, I have only eaten it twice in a row.
Within the past couple months I've started buying more fresh produce and making sure to get plenty of protein (this is what curbs your appetite) I can tell on the days I don't get enough, I'm starving!
I have a good 100lbs to lose and would like to eventually do it. Recently Iv'e started making smoothies for breakfast. I throw in about 5 strawberries, 1 medium banana, and a handful of blueberries, 3/4 cup of milk, a little bit of agave nectar and thats it :-D It's so good, and so refreshing. I usually have this with a hard-boiled egg (much cheaper than buying protein powder).
Last week I tried a Beginner's session to bellydancing and WHOA was it a workout!!!!!I get it through OnDemand with Comcast for free. I think I may try it this weekend.
@JamieinMN: oo you just reminded me, i think i've been told netflix has workout dvds on instant streaming! i'll have to check those out. I'm *just* starting again (today!) so it'll take me a while to hit a groove. I really like the pilates dvds I have though. They're the cheesy infomercial windsor pilates ones but they really work! Every time I want to lose weight I lose them and I really do always feel like they make me stronger. It's a little frustrating bc I know exactly what to do to lose weight and when I do it, it works... but I always just stop. lol.
I don't have that much to lose (I'm aiming for around 35 pounds total) but definitely more than 10. I have tried a few times to just get serious about a workout schedule and eating healthier foods but it was hard for me to come up with things I liked that were healthy and I didn't get quick results so I would give up and quit. I started at about a size 10 and was not overweight to the point that I was unhealthy or that my doctor was worried so it was easy for me to just say forget it! But now that we are talking about trying to conceive I really wanted to get as healthy and in shape as possible before I put my body through a pregnancy.
So, long story short, I decided to try Nutrisystem. It sucks that you have to spend money upfront but honestly it averages out to something like $3 a meal so it's really not expensive and it WORKS. The food is good (for the most part) and I have had a ton of success. I've been doing it since June 25th and as of this morning I'm down 15 pounds. I am working out a lot too so that's an important part of the picture. But I expect to hit my goal weight within 3 months which I'm really psyched about.
ETA: Nutrisystem is really about portion control more than it is about eating super healthy food so I think it sets you up to succeed even once you stop the program. Already on days that I cheat and eat off the program I notice that I'm full after eating a much smaller portion than what I used to eat before I started the program. Your body learns to only eat as much as you need, not as much as you want.
I started using myfitnesspal 3.5 weeks ago for the same reasons you listed above. I'm pushing 30 and watching my mom deal with diabetes has been a scary eye opener.
Tracking with the website REALLY helps me keep focus. I just wish the weight would come off a bit faster! I honestly have more than 90 to lose I just haven't decided where I want to fall / will have to guage my ultimate goal a bit later. It gets overwhelming sometimes but when I really stop to think how fast time moves (OMG I've been married for 10 months!) it is kind of refreshing. I can be significantly lighter before I know it!
Hopefully we can all stick with it.
@CorgiTales:Oooo on Netflix?!?!?!?! Dayyyuuummm! I will have to check when I get home! Wooo!!!!!
I would like to lose about 50-60 pounds. My real goal though, is to be able to walk into any store and have to worry either that they carry an XL, or that their XL is big enough to go over my chest :(. I have a wide back and DD-DDD boobs. My FI loves the way I look but I get really discouraged sometimes when I look at photos of myself, or when I try to buy clothes.
He also makes it difficult sometimes because he's super skinny and eats all the time. Add to that I just hurt my back and can't really exercise. *sigh* 9.5 months to go, hopefully I get my butt in gear.
@MyFavouriteChords:Everyone's been talking about this Fitness Pal.......I'm joining right now!
@CorgiTales: Me! To be in a healthy range I need to lose about 55lbs. My weight has gone up and down so much, its embarassing. But since meeting my FI I have packed on about 40lbs. Most of it in the last 18 months.
I had great success with weight watchers in the past, and lost about 50lbs (before I met FI), but I cant seem to get back on track. I do great for a couple weeks, and then just fall off. And of course, I always have an excuse.
We actually started a Biggest Loser competition at work today and I am hoping that will give me a kick in the pants that I need. the weight gain is really starting to effect my self esteem. I was always the "fat kid" growing up, and when I lost weight the first time around I never felt better. But now, I am to the point where I am embarassed. Im seeing some old friends this weekend and even though I am excited, in the back of my mind I am mortified that theyll see me at this weight. I also havent gone clothes shopping in forever because its not enjoyable.
Im just waiting for that moment that it will finally stick. My Fi is an amazing support, and always tells me I am beautiful. I just really need to do this for myself.
Good luck!
I highly recommend Weight Watchers (Points Plus). You can eat anything you want as long as you stay within your points. I lost 40lbs since March, and seriously it is a very sustanable diet. It's a diet I can live with easily. I found it much less stressful than other diets I have tried because I didn't have to worry much about fat, carbs, ect. You just use the points calculator and budget it into your day! I also feel like I have better control of my eating habits now and that I've learned so much. I would recommend it to anyone!
I don't even pay for the meetings or online thing, I have an app for Android that cost me a one-time fee of $4.50 that I use to calculate and track points.
I've been taking 30-45 minute walks at least every second day and I think that's sped up my weight loss too and has made me feel overall more healthy and happy. I also have trouble modivating myself to exercise (although now that I've completed my weight loss goal, I'm thinking of starting a fitness one) but I found just walking was easier to do. Once you start, it's easy to keep going and it's enjoyable too!
When i started WW, I also felt like 40lbs was basically impossible. It seemed like it would take foreveerr and there were weeks where I only lost .2 of a pound or even gained weight!! But let me tell you, every .2 of a pound adds up and before you know it, you're speeding along to success. :)
I've been using Weight Watchers since July 2010 and have gone down from 216 to 171 so far....I'm aiming for 145 by my wedding next June.
It's been really, really great when I'm dedicated. I'm slacking as of late, but even my slacking now is far better than my best before weight watchers. I would really recommend trying it for a couple of months, you can always stop attending meetings, or cancel your subscription, but I feel like it's worth it. I feel like a better, more confident person when I'm making the right decisions, and the community support through their online program has really, really helped.
@Moose1209: thats great that you've found something that works for you! I've thought about doing something like that but I don't think it'd work for me bc my husband does not need to lose any weight and so we'd be having separate meals all the time.
@MyFavouriteChords: yea. one thing i try to remind myself (and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't) is that time is going to pass just the same regardless. In one year from now I can be 20 pounds heavier, the same, or 50 pounds lighter. I wish it was realistic to think I could lose all this weight in 6 mo or 1 year but its not and that sucks.... but dealing with reality, where do I want to be in 1 year? 50lbs lighter is better than 0 lbs lighter or +20!
@Future MrsB: I know how you feel! I'm to the point now where I really have a hard time shopping in normal stores like ann taylor or banana republic. I don't think they even have 18s. I can buy their shirts, SOMETIMES. And that's it.
@Bostongrl25: Agree about the old friends part. I'm less concerned about how I look with people who see me all the time.. but I ran into a guy I knew in hs a few weeks ago and he was going to a wedding for some other people who knew in hs that next weekend. All I could think was "He is probably going to tell everyone how he ran into me and omg she got fat." Not fun.
@pui.puni: Yea I've done ww before and the Lose It app is very similar. I love having it on my phone bc its so easy to put stuff in!
@leavingthecity: congrats, you're over half way there!
@Moose1209: I worried about that too but my husband has been really supportive. We still go shopping together (I supplement the NutriSystems meals with fresh fruits and veggies) and I help him plan out his meals and buy what he needs. He just cooks his own stuff and then we eat together. It really hasn't been that hard for us to coordinate. Just something to consider : )
@Moose1209:when i got sick a few mo ago i was on my ass on the couch for a week and my husband did his own grocery shopping. he came home with a slab of ribs and a ginromous pork ass. And thats what he ate. lol. Also, he doesn't know how to make grilled cheese. All of this to say... if I wasn't cooking his meals and forcing him to eat moderately healthfully he would eat nothing but meat (mostly pork and beef) and would prob have a heart attack by 40. lol
@CorgiTales: I have about 40lbs to left to lose. I'm the same way as you. I have had times in my life where I have been thin. I am a yo you dieter for sure. It's always when I hit a size 16 that I start to realize I've let it go too far. I've decided this time to make a life change, rather then just a crazy diet and excercise change. I lost 8lbs last month and have stuck to my gym schedule. My biggest issue is sweets and honestly I can't give them up, so I haven't been taking it away from myself. I just eat skinny cow ice creams or make fruit cobblers at home for myself so I know what's in them.
I tried work out videos but they didn't work for me. I stopped doing it after 2 weeks or so. I'm a frugal person so paying for the gym and not using it would just make me mad LOL. I wish you luck!
I have lost 28 pounds and have another 14 to go for my goal weight. I hadn't always been overweight and I lost weight previously from diets but then 'couldn't afford' the fresh or right foods, my dad died and I was comfort eating or I excercised so I could eat more. IMO everything is an excuse, if anyone wants to lose weight they will (unless for medical reasons). I feel like my lifestyle has changed and not just a crash diet to lose weight quickly. IF you are unhappy with yourself about your weight I'm sure your husband will support you by making his own food or You could feed him the same food but diffeent portion sizes or make two different meals.
If you're interested in being healthy as well as losing weight, I would suggest getting into "whole foods" eating--staying away from processed foods, eating stuff that's in season and as fresh as possible, etc. Not only will you really diversify your diet if you're eating lots of fruit and veggies, it's pretty crazy what's actually in a lot of the stuff that we do eat without even thinking about it. I would recommend Michael Pollan's book, In Defense of Food.
In terms of keeping yourself motivated, maybe set a goal for yourself? Like when I get down to such and such weight, I'll plan a trip to go somewhere with DH where I can rock a bikini. Or signing up for a 5k with a friend.

Long story short, I have been overweight most of my life. Right before high school I dropped a bunch of weight (through crazy working out and eating 800 calories/day) and was pretty thin through high school, and then in college I started packing it back on. Went from my lowest of a 4/6 when I was 16 up over the last 10 or so years to an 18 (and let's be honest... they're getting a little tight). I've yo'yo'd, I've committed and failed... you know the story.
Last night, randomly, I decided to commit again. Really for my health more than anything. My husband is awesome and never makes me feel badly about my weight but I feel badly about it. I feel like I'm getting too old to think that being overweight isn't going to affect me long term.
I really hate working out but I can force myself to do it. The bigger problem is food. I'm a suuuuper picky eater and I love terrible-for-me food.
My plan for right now is to go to the gym 3 days/week and do my 20 minute pilates video on off-days. As for eating, I'm going to focus first on eating more produce and watching portion sizes. Once I get used to that I'll try to explore more food options but I don't want to make too many changes all at once that I won't be able to stick with. Also, I'm tracking everything on my Lose It app on my phone.
So... that's me. Anyone else? I know there are some other fitness threads but it seems like most people who participate have like 10-20 pounds to lose and honestly that kind of depresses me. I'm looking at losing more like 90... and it seems FOREVER far away.
