My fiance has promised me a dog for my birthday as soon as we move in together. I am looking at mini schnauzers right now and I think theyre absolutely adorable. From what I’ve read they will be a great dog for us living in an apartment. For those of you who own one, what are their personalities like? Are they easy to train? Do they bark a lot? Thanks for the input in advance everyone!!

Mr. Hedgie absolutely loves them. I think they look like sad old man dogs when they get older. lol. They are very hyper and very smart at the same time. They can bark a lot but you can also make sure to train them not to. They aren’t like chiuauas (sp?) that don’t know how to shut up. All in all they are great dogs… I just wish they looked cuter when they got older!

@Emmanem: My aunt/uncle/cousins’ family has a Giant Schnauzer and a Mini Schnauzer…. they thought it was a cute combo. The GS is amazing – a sweet, quiet, gentle, calm and well-trained lover boy. The MS is the devil. Quite literally. She barks (at everything!!!), growls, won’t listen and is oddly skittish around people (for no reason at all – they got her as a very young pup, socialize her continually, etc.). She’s very intelligent, but she’s evil. They love the MS to death, but they’re definitely sticking to the GS in the future. That being said, she is one dog and you can’t judge a whole breed based on the one story. Good luck 🙂 hehe

We have two mini schnauzers.. we loved our first one so much that we had to get another. They have two completely opposite personalities. One is energentic and loves to run and play and get into EVERYTHING.. and our other one is as laid back as it gets. They bark when someone knocks at the door or if another dog walks by but otherwise they are pretty quiet. Except that they snore haha. Both of them are trained.. they sit, lay down and one will roll over. They walk well on their leashes and get along very well with other dogs.
One thing to consider is the grooming.. we take them in to be groomed at least once every 8 weeks. It costs about 40$ per dog down here so it adds up. We also invested in a fancy shaver so we can keep them clean in between grooms so we don’t have to go as often. Unfortunatly, though we have tried, we can’t give them a total haircut ourselves w/o them looking like they got into a fight with a chainsaw =(
I love my mini schanuzers, they are my babies. They are loving and cuddly but also independent when they want to be. People are always complimenting them as well, whenever we are in public. Just like any dog, they take training and patience but they are well worth it:) good luck with your decision!

I know this thread is a bit old, but I cant help but show off my Furry Boy!
I have a Schnoodle! (Or at least its our vets best guess, we adopted him)
=) His name is Mr. Watson! Best furry thing to happen to us! xo
He is insanely smart, so far great on training, great listener, loves to sniff! He’s my “Nosey Nose” and my “Lazy Bug”… he’s either “Discovering or Napping”. Not a get in your face type. Loving, snuggles, but also loves his space! I fell in love with Schnauzers after watching Pets 101 with them on it! We started watching that show when discussing getting our first dog!
