So after alot of talking and alot of looking FH and I have decided that we want a small intimate wedding  and we wanted an outside wedding with just a few close family and a few close friends... we are only expecting max 40 people.

Well that put alot of venues out for us & some others we willing to accomadate us but the prices were well over 1,000 for just the use of the venue & i dunno i dont really want to pay that price to use a flat spot on someones land.

So we are debating on the idea of doing it on a piece of land that either he owns or his mom and dad own... which is very convient because both is right next to our house...

The only concern we have at this point in well we live in the mountains of TN and well flat land is hard to come by... My baby said that if the area was not flat enough he could grate it out. There is this little spot between 2 hills that levels off at the top infront of the woods that we think would be beautiful with only a little work but it is not perfectly flat all over. He loves the idea of having it pretty much at home & he is very much an outdoorsy person who loves to dig and plant and do all sorts of gardening and yard work and he thinks we can make it beautiful and have it just the way we want...

Do you think this is doable if the land is not perfectly flat?

The other option is to have it in his parents yard there is alot of flat area  and while there yard is really nice the neighbors land behind it is kinda trashy and i dunno how to mask this... His mother suggested building a gazeboo in her yard... she said she has always wanted one but this is one of those i can count on it until i see it happen things.

We always do cookouts & parties  and things on the driveway & it works out very well.... & this is where we plan to hold our reception... we do plan to rent a tent for the reception

but what about the ceremony area? I dont want to rent two tents..... but what are we to do if it does rain?

Anyone had similar experiences ? Anyone having a wedding similar to this? Been to a wedding similar to this?

What other things do you think i should be concerned with or plan for?

Congratulations! I was married in June in the backyard of my first home that I bought in October (he proposed there in December!).

It was a family event with only about 35 people there to celebrate our day. For our set up in the back yard, we have a sloped yard that ends in a pretty flat space. The flat space is small but worked out well for our ceremony space and dance area. We covered most of the yard with a tent and then used two halves of the tent--one part for the ceremony, one part for the round dining tables.

The slope of the yard wasn't really a factor. The tables were level because we rented round tables where the legs were able to be pushed into the ground to make them more level. The arbor we used to frame the ceremony was staked to the ground in a way to make it look level. Somehow, it all worked out.:) I also got some little gadgets for my ivory satin peeptoe heels that helped me not sink into the ground. My best advice would be to pick the place that you like best for the atmosphere. The rest of the details will come together!

Let me know if you have other questions--I'm happy to help!

I really loved our backyard wedding, though it was a bit bigger.  One thing is it wasn't a ton cheaper because we rented tents in case it rained and plates and silverware to have enough.  So with all the rentals, it was only a bit cheaper, though there are a lot more ways you can make it a unique wedding and cut costs by having a backyard wedding.  The other good thing was we got married at the church at 2, were back to the house by 3 and then didn't have any time we had to leave, like you do at a lot of receptions, so we drank and ate and danced and had a good time until midnight (when we finally got tired)

I actually want to do this (still not engaged yet) either at my grandmother's house or my BFF's. It would be intimate and only family and close friends folllowed by an adult only after party at a lounge later that night.

It seems like you have a lot of options that you can explore. If you were to do it at your FMIL's maybe you could mask the trashy neighboors area by having a tent or putting up large flags and hanging lights?

We are having our wedding at my parents' home but it won't be small - probably about 150 people. And I agree with those who said that at home weddings have a lot of expenses you have to think about that you don't have to worry about when going with a traditional venue. We are renting everything, from a tent to tables, chairs, plates, etc. and its going to be just as expensive if not more than going with a venue.

However, I totally get what you mean about preparing the area for your wedding and the meaning in that. My whole family has been working on the property to make it look great for the wedding and that is going to make it so special on that day, to know what everyone put into it. And to be able to take our kids there and say, "This is where we got married," - that will be so special and worth all the work.

For those of you who are planning an outdoor wedding at home or in an outdoor location I would love to see some pictures of your inspiration or of your wedding.

Well we weighed the cost and we live in a fairly small area and have weighed alot of the options from everthing of traditional wedding venues to local parks.

There was 2 parks that we considered but they are kinda far out of the way and are always so crowded and dont really have a set area out of the way for weddings.

We found alot of other venues that we thought were pretty but basically all you were getting was a pretty spot with restroom access and a dressing areas and a kitchen for catering and indoor reception areas for an additional cost  but all places required you to rent you own tables, chairs, linens, tents etc. So to me it just seems like for the kind of wedding  that we are wanting it really is going to be not only more convient but cheaper for us to do an at home wedding.

Perhaps I can take some pictures of the different areas we areconsidering and you guys can give me some insight.

My only fear at this point is the rain ... I really dont want to have to rent two tents and I dunno it just seems like that if we have to have a tent placed over our ceremony location that it will take away from the whole idea of having the wedding outside.

So dinner and dancing were in the back under tents with clear sides and we had cocktails in the front yard with no tents to enjoy the outdoors before it got dark.  Our wedding was at 2, back for cocktails around 3 and then starting to move to dinner around 5, then it got dark around 6 or so.
