I've been having a lot of problems with breakthrough bleeding the last few months. I've been on Ortho-TriCyclin Lo since April or March and have been pretty good about always taking the pills exactly on time. I had talked to my gyno and she said that I should go on Yaz since it's a regular dosage of hormones rather than different levels each day. However, I've heard there was a lawsuit agains Yaz. So what should I do? Has anyone here used Yaz?
I was on it and HATED it! It messed with my emotions too much! Can you try just taking regular ortho-cyclin? That also gives you one level of horomones.
HATED IT. When I started taking it I had my period for almost a month straight, and then after that I spotted on and off for another 3 months until I finally called my doc and said F this give me the Ortho back!
ETA: I meant regular Ortho not the Lo. I have been taking bc for 10 years now (wow) and I've tried Ortho regular, yaz, and the patch. I will never take another pill other than Ortho now.
I used it and it was fine for me for a few years. I went off it because my doctor wanted to stop me having a monthly period.
I used it and I just went to the doctor last week and switched my prescription. I didn't like the emotions and the reduced sex drive it gave me. She suggested that I go on Desogen (which I start next week) if that helps at all.
So then what do I say to her? I mean I was too nervous to say anything when she first told me because I didn't know what the lawsuit was about and she already called the prescription in.
@SweetRose2011: call her back and say after doing some research you don't want yaz, what are your other options.
I think that you should at least try it for a few months. If you don't like it, go to something else after that time. Everyone reacts to BC differently.
I wouldn't worry about the lawsuits, they are mostly to make lawyers money.
But if you are that worried about it, ask to try another type of BC pill that has a single dose of hormones.
I had to chime in on this one. . . I LOVE Yaz! have been on it for about 2-3 years and it totally regulates my emotions and my cycle. . love the 3-4 day periods as opposed to my previous 7-8 day ones! anyway, just had to say that some people think this med is great. . .and as of this year it comes in generic!
I used to throw up almost daily because Yaz upset my stomach so much. I know everyone is different, but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone. Just tell her you're concerned about it because so many people have had problems.
and by the way. . .I am a doctor and I don't think there's any reason to rule out trying Yaz just because there's a lawsuit.
DO NOT USE YAZ! I used depo and it stunted my bone growth the doc told me I had to get off. Put me on YAZ and their is a lawsuit I quickly got off of it. Its all over the tv. My family used a med called acutain (cant spell) and It causes chrons. Even if you take a med for a short period of time it still can be harmful. My dad took that med for 2 months and It caused my sister and him to have chrons. My fiance also took it and he has similar problems but not as bad. If there are too many risk involved find another that hasnt been put out there as harmful.!
I was on Yaz but am now off of it. I'm guessing it didn't work for me. I am on BC number 4, so I really can't remember what each one did for me. I'm sure it caused me to be a little angry, and didn't stop the anger/emotional girly stuff it said it would. I'm on Loestrin 24 now, and it works well enough. I went on an anti-depressant as well, so that hs curbed the severe mood swings.
Personally, I love Yaz. I've been on at least 5 different birth controls over the past 10 years (including pills, the ring, the patch...)
Yaz has no adverse side effects for me. I never feel nauseous, it clears up my acne, and it even keeps my IBS under control (don't ask me how, but I went off of the pill for a few months, and my IBS was acting up terrible when I was off it.)
I've been taking it for about 2.5 years. I'm now taking the generic form, Giavani (sp?). And I can't tell a difference between the two.
oh yeah, and I actually lost weight on it. about 10 lbs.
i hated it! i gained 60lbs in 3 months of taking it. & like others have said, my emotions were all over the place!
I'm using it. I don't love it, I don't hate it. It's just okay I guess... LO's don't work on me so I switched to Yaz and my cramps are terrible when I get my period. But It's better than bleeding all the time I suppose.
I want to switch to something new after we have another baby =)
I use the generic of yasmin, Ocella, which is the same idea as Yaz. I'm fine with it. And the lawsuit isn't a big deal at all. It's no more dangerous than any other birth control. It was started because people got blood clots and such, but you run that risk with any birth control. If you're on b.c. and you fly or go on a long trip, get up and walk every now and then and you're fine. If you don't want to take it, don't take it, but don't base your opinion on that bogus lawsuit.
I was on Yaz and loved it! I'm not on it anymore, due to health insurance problems, and there is a definite difference on my periods, emotions, skin and strangely my hair. While on it my skin was great, my periods were super short and it kept my emotions in check. When I went off of it my body went nuts! My emotions were all over the place, my skin is terrible and for some odd reason my hair has thinned out a lot. If I could afford to go back on it I would in a heart beat.
Hi SweetRose. I'm finally finishing med school soon, so hopefully I can help you out a little bit. The reason why you had break through bleeding on Ortho tricyclin lo is because in the 3rd week (prob when you had spotting) the estrogen dips to a lower level. It is supposed to mimic your natural cycle. Yaz has one level of hormone straight through and does not dip down in the 3rd week. However, Yaz is a low dose of estrogen and you may continue to have break through bleeding. Yaz does have a different chemical compound of hormones compared to Ortho and it s important to make sure your kidneys are working well when on Yaz. All oral contraceptives put you at risk of developing blood clots, especially if you smoke cigarettes and if you are older than 30. If you continue to have break through bleeding on Yaz, I would recommend Ortho Cyclin for you. Its a similar formulation of what you were taking before and it is just one steady level of hormone.
@Twizzler: That really helps me to better understand why the Ortho Lo wasn't working. But I've been struggling I guess to understand the difference between spotting and full on period. Because yes, it is during the last week that I'm getting the spotting and it's actually pretty heavy at times (tmi i'm sure) and then I get my period. If that lasts a week because of the last week of pills I've had almost a week and half of bleeding and that's a long time.
i've been on yaz for about a year and i like it well enough. gave me migraines more often than i was used to, but those went away after about 2-3 months..i also didn't gain any weight on it, and with other BC's, i gained 5-7 lbs (which is a lot for my frame)...
Also, one more thing I forgot to ask. So many people say that Yaz has helped to clear up their acne but I already have dry skin will that make my dry skin worse?
I liked Yaz a lot but I did get migraines if I had caffeine while on it. It was the best out of the birth controls I've tried (like 5 or 6).... no periods, no acne or weight gain either and I never had to deal with nasty pms symptoms. Maybe try Yasmin instead to stop the break through bleeding since it is a higher dose of the same hormones. Good luck!
I am on Yaz and it's fine. Everytime a new bc pill comes out, all these lawsuits come up. The FDA released a statement saying there is no conclusive proof that Yaz/Yasmin causes any of these problems. If your doctor suggested it, then you should at least try it. Just because it works or doesn't work for one person doesn't mean it will or won't for you.
I was on it for a little while, mainly because I get really bad cramps on my period. Yaz did NOTHING for me, and I still had really painful periods, so I switched over to Loestrin. Which is awesome.
I was on Yaz for a little while but I needed a full week for my period so I went back to Yasmin (similar but different than Yaz). I have used Yasmin for almost 10 years.
I was on Yaz for about 7 months. I gained a few pounds and had mood swings, but it wasn't horrible. I went off of it because of the increased risk of clotting. I had never had a problem with my period, I was just trying to not get pregnant, and that health risk wasn't worth it to me. I switched to Loestrin and I had a bad reaction to it. I was a basket case on it. Since then, I've been too scared to try any others, especially since I don't really need to be on them.
Personally, I wouldn't want to mess with risking blood clots and strokes just for shorter periods.
All estrogen-containing forms of birth control (so many - not all - of the hormonal birth control options) lead to an increased risk of blood clots (which can lead to deep vein thrombosis, heart attacks, and strokes). There are risks and benefits to every medication - whether it's tylenol, chemotherapy or something in between. Your doctor will be able to assess if a medication will be more likely to cause benefit or harm for you (obviously they won't prescribe a medication with the intent of harming you).
For example, the medication Yaz has a black box warning (many products have this type of warning) saying:cigarette smoking incr. risk of serious cardiovascular side effects from combination OCPs; incr. risk w/ age (particularly for women >35 yo) and w/ number of cigarettes smoked (especially if >15 cigarettes/day); strongly advise women to not smoke; contraindicated in smokers >35 yo If you have concerns, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
What you will find online is usually anecdotal stories - a health care professional should be able to talk to you about the research that has been done on thousands of people who took the medication (vs. placebo or another medication that's already on the market). It's important to note that after a medication receives approval by the FDA, post-marketing surveillance is required, and if new information becomes available, it is included in the medication monographs - so that health care providers and patients have access to up-to-date information.
Don't take it! I thought I was just stressed out (looking for a new job, finishing up grad school and wedding planning) but I realized Yaz was making me so depressed and I would just cry for no reason at all!! Much happier now that I'm off it! :)
I've been on Yaz for just over a year now. When my Dr first prescribed it, I found all of the horror stories online and got a little nervous about it. I decided to give it a try and haven't had any problems thus far. No weight gain, no out of control emotions, nothing to complain about. The best thing about it is that I only have 3-day periods and they are super light :)
If you're really apprehensive about taking it, though, call you doctor and have her put you on another prescription.
I was on it for two or three years and loved it. My periods were short and painless, my emotions balanced, etc. I went onto Yaz from ortho-tri-cyclin, which I HATED because it made me gain a ton of weight (read: 60 pounds). I was able to lose it all once I got on Yaz.
BC works differently for different women. What works best for one woman may not be the right choice for another.
YAZ is the only BC that works consistently for me because of its different hormone composition, as Twizzler said. I have PCOS, and my cycles were still highly irregular when I tried any other BC. YAZ was the only one (tried 5) in 10 yrs that kept my cycles to 28-30 days.
I used it and hated it. I would randomly start crying and felt like an emotional wreck. But everyone is different!!!
@ADBJSM: Do you mean "Acutane"? That is an acne medication, not birth control.
I use it and have no problems with it at all. I think it's different for each person- I say just try it out and see how it effects you.
I HATED it! It really messed with my emotions in a huge way. My husband and I would both tell a difference in my mood as soon as I went off of it.
I have been on Yaz for 4 months now and I actually like it. It doesn't mess with my sex drive the way every previous pill has, my boobs don't constantly hurt when I'm on it like they did before, and I can't really detect any other side effects. I was also on Ortho-Cyclen for many years, and while I liked it it did basically kill my libido. But they all can do that. Every pill, also, really does affect everyone differently. That's no joke.
I think you would be fine to try Yaz, it's a very popular pill, and there's a reason why doctors are still prescribing it. But if you are too worried about it definitely tell your doctor you want to try something else.
