I’d check with the parents before assuming they’ll let a stranger watch their child.  I would not.

@FallNYC:  I considered the same for my wedding but my coordinator and my mother both said, in their experience, people won’t let a stranger watch their kids.

I think it is perfectly acceptable to only allow this couple to bring their child.  We are doing the same thing.  The only children who will be attending the wedding are either in the wedding or will be travelling from out of state with their parents.  Just explain the situation to your friends.  They should understand.

I hired a babysitter… we couldn’t find any services in our city that were available on our date, so we hired a montessori teacher. It worked out well!

I used http://www.sittercity.com/ to find babysitters for my wedding. It worked out perfectly because there was a separate room at our venue for the kids to hang out at.

@FallNYC:  Well ours was somewhat different than yours, since the kids area was in a corner of the upstairs bar at the venue, and the parents could bring the kids down to the main reception or back up to the sitter as they pleased. But kids were invited to our wedding, we just had like 18 of them so they needed their own little kids area. I imagine that if we’d had a sitter offsite, no one would have utilized the service – BUT that would be because the kids were at the wedding. I don’t know how it would have been if we were having a no-kids wedding.

@FallNYC: – Since ours was also onsite no one really had an issue with it. If it was offsite we would probably had less people use the babysitting services but I know a couple of families were delighted to have an evening to themselves at the reception.

I emailed all of the families about a week before the wedding to let them know about the details of the babysitting services – where it was at, what time it was available from, and who the babysitter was (added any credentials they sent me) to get a feel for how many would use the service. I also provided board games, snacks, crayons in the room. And also created a sign in sheet for the babysitters to use so they can contact the parents if necessary.

I would suggest asking the couple if they would be interested in you finding a sitter so they they can travel with their kid or if they can make arrangments themselves. Mention that the venue isn’t really suited for children, and voila.

well I am not married yet, but when I was in high school I was the babysitter for quite a few weddings. I loved it because i got paid more than normal because each childs parents paid me. usually it was in a seperte room at the church or venue, but once it was at a hotel.

@FallNYC:  Sounds like you do.  He needs to take one for the team too and understand it works both ways.  Good luck to you.
