We probably will. Our wedding is on the beach in FL so FI does not want anything tropical.
We really want to go to Orlando, but we go every year... lol. So it's not like it's anything new, BUT we enjoy it SO much and would spend more than usual to really enjoy ourselves.
PeachBride - yall will have an awesome time!! Between the theme parks, shopping, and restaurants - you can't go wrong!
Another thought is to go somewhere in CA. We've never been the west coast, so we're not quite sure what to expect. So we're deciding to either go with what we know (Orlando, but we love it!) or check out a new city together such as San Fran or San Diego....
Hmm.... decisions, decisions - I'd love to hear what other people are doing!!
We are having an elopement/mini-moon in Texas Hill Country- and plan to bike around to some wineries, have picnics, and hit up a dance hall or two two celebrate! Three nights at a B&B and then 2 nights in a secluded cabin.
We may plan for a proper honeymoon later, to follow our large reception in the fall :)
We'll probably do something in the US as well! I am not great with flying, so we're more limited on options. We'll definitely either end up somewhere in the states or on a cruise, not sure which yet!
oh yes! our mini-moon the day after the wedding will be at mohegan sun. then we're taking a delayed honeymoon to disney in august. we go to disney every year - so it won't be anything new - but we don't care, we're so excited :)
We are honeymooning in Disneyland for a week. Our wedding is kinda a honeymoon in itself, so when we get off the cruise in Long Beach we will just head over to Disney. We are annual passholders, but its really our favorite place to be :)
We rented a beautiful house outside of the Rocky Mountain National Park. It was soooo gorgeous and romantic! We had a private hot tub overlooking the mountains (house was built into the side of a mountain) and a goumet kitchen to cook together after hiking in the day. Oh, and lots of fireplaces to curl up in front of with some wine! It was so great - I can't believe what a steal renting a house is vs getting a hotel!
we're not having a full out honeymoon cuz of work..but we're doing a minimoon in san francisco after our wedding.
We're doing 6 days, 5 nights in San Francisco! Neither of us has been there before, so we're very excited! :)
Fiance and I are planning to honeymoon in Naples, FL
we did! We rented a cabin in Gatlinburg, TN for a week. We loved it. It was relaxing and laidback. We went to dinner shows, we went siteseeing and we were even able to meet up with friends of mine from college (Iwent to UTChatt) that could not attend the wedding due to financial reasons.
Staying state side was never a question for us we. We knew we would not be going abroad nor taking a cruise. it was anot a financial reason for us at all. BUT, what ever you decide to do, remember why you are there and love him for who he is.
We are spending a week at a resort in central Oregon. We are renting a private house with a hot tub. The resort has biking, swimming, rafting, hiking, nature centers, and a big city nearby for lots of shopping and restaurants. :)
We spent 9 days in Napa and San Francisco. Awesome trip! The whole thing was wonderful.
Our honeymoon is just at the end of beach value season. So we are renting a huge house in the Outer Banks, that has a jacuzzi, hot tub, private swimming pool and its on the water. Its actually going to be cheaper than staying in a hotel and we are super excited. During the summer the place usually rents for almost double our whole honeymoon budget. So we feel really lucky to be staying there, even if we are staying in the US. I'm just gald we don't have to go through the hassle & expense of getting passports! Some people have given us weird looks about not going to the Caribbean but oh well, we're happy and that's all that matters!
We are heading to AC for a week. Usually when we get to go it is for a concert so it is an overnight thing, we are using my mom's time share as her present to us...after the wedding the finances will be tight. I also have two kids and did not want to go too far just in case.
We are going to Disney World for our honeymoon! I have only been once, and my fiance has never been, so we are both super excited. We live and Mass. and are making the 24 hour drive to Florida! I am super excited about the whole thing! We are going to stay at a resort inside Disney and feel better about having the luxury of our own car, on top of neither one of us are huge fans of flying.
Wow! Such great responses ladies. Most of these places are all places that we considered as well. Sometimes you just feel like everyone is going abroad, so it's nice to know that we're not alone! We are both super excited about the trip though.
@flutterby: I went to UT-Knox! Small world, huh? FI and I had also thought about going to Gatlinburg, but being so close to it in Knoxville, we decided against it. Plus as I mentioned I haven't been to WDW in FOREVER! But the mountains in Gatlinburg are gorgoeus and you're right, it's so peaceful there.
@Future Couture: Have you guys mapped out what you might do at WDW, thus far? I heard there are passes of some sort for newlyweds that will grant you faster access to rides and attractions at WDW, and will get you some special treatment. I will come back here and post, if I find out anything.
@jaylii9: We also thought about San Fran! I hear it's beautiful and SO romantic there as well! I am sure you guys will love it there!!!
My uncle is loaning us his beach condo in FL. We were looking to go abroad too, but who can pass up a free beach condo??
@ms_nickie: Exactly, lol! Which is why are Florida bound after the wedding! Enjoy!!
@peachbride: We got married last September so we have already been on our honeymoon. Feel free to ask any questions if you are interested! We had a great time!
We're from Pittsburgh and we're honeymooning in Charleston, SC for a week. Anyone else feel like people kind of turn their noses up at a domestic honeymoon?
@jaylii9: I definitely will!! Thanks! I know FI and I talked about visiting SF in the near future. Although I used to live in LA, he has never been to California, so I would love to take him. Maybe as a surprise sometime once we get settled!
@JillBill: I DEFINITELY feel that way sometimes, which is part of the reason why I asked what other ladies were taking domestic honeymoons. I know the usual thing is to take a honeymoon in some balmy, beach destination abroad. It was really cool to see all the domestic honeymooners reply to this post! It was also great to see that people can most certainly enjoy themselves within the contiential US for the honeymoon. :-)
We're honeymooning in Hot Springs, Arkansas and are really excited! We found a really nice B&B with awesome honeymoon packages. It's going to be really fun and within our budget.
Like JillBill said, it does seem like people don't seem to think a honeymoon is a "real" honeymoon unless it involves a passport, but I think that's a new thing. I don't think people in my parents' generation felt that way. A honeymoon is a time to spend with your new spouse and it can be as simple as staying in the next town down the interstate or going half-way across the globe. It's up to you to make it special wherever it is. You have to work with your budget and there's nothing wrong with enjoying the US. It's a big country after all! I do think that by reading wedding blogs, there's an additional sense of everyone going on grand honeymoons abroad, but when I look at people I actually know, there's a lot more variety. Sorry--didn't mean to get on a soapbox! It's just a topic I've thought about a lot lately.
@peachbride: You'll have a wonderful honeymoon in Disney. FI and I discussed going there b/c it is one of our favorite vacation spots. However, we have opted to try Hawaii. I'd like to suggest checking out www.allears.net and www.disboards.com. They have wonderful ideas for honeymoon activities and can help narrow down your restaurant selection. I'd like to recommend the California Grill in the Contemporary Resort for dinner. And try and get reservations for later in th evening so you can watch the fireworks from there. Also, enjoy a breakfast at the Knoa Cafe. The Tonga Toast is out of this world. Enjoy your honeymoon!!!!!
We have not done that yet! We are not going to be going until June of next year, but we have narrowed down a few of the places that we liked and hope to stay when we go. I defintely want to get the mouse bride and groom ears though. And everyone has said to mention you are going to be on your honeymoon anytime you do something. Book the vacation, make reservations for dinner, ect
@cafegirl: I totally agree. My parents went to a little beach in Florida and stayed at a cruddy motel, which was considered totally normal for a honeymoon back then. Part of me gets a liiiiittle bit jealous when I hear other brides talk about their honeymoons to ridiculous locations or Caribbean islands. But, I keep reminding myself that since we're just starting out, blowing 1/4 of our bank account on one trip is probably not fiscally responsible. If a domestic honeymoon helps us buy a house more quickly or enables us to take more trips in the future, then it's money well-saved!
We went to Las Vegas and had a blast. He doesn't drink and I rarely drink and gambling is kinda- meh-. So we didn't go there for the usual Vegas reasons. It's more about who you are with and what kind of fun you can find no matter where you are!
@cafegirl: and @JillBill: I totally agree ladies! We also had a friend tell us that the honeymoon was more about spending time together than spending money on a ritzy destination. Now, of course, if you have the money to do it, then so be it. But we don't. FI and I are also just starting out in our careers, and so spending a bundle on a honeymoon, when we know we will be able to take those more fancy trips later on, just wasn't doable for us, and didn't make much sense. We know we are going to have a great time in Orlando!
@mmsva:I actually used to live in Las Vegas for a year, and FI and I visited Vegas a couple summers ago, and had a blast. He doesn't drink either, I only do so occassionally, and neither of us gamble, but we checked out some of the great shows, walked The Strip, and did a lot of eating! If we hadn't already gone, that would've also been one of our options.
@mshoagie: Thanks so much for the tips, websites, and suggestions. I told FI about them, and I we are definitely going to check out at least some of them. If you think of any other "must-do" activities, please let me know! Orlando almost seems overwhelming at times because there is so much to do there, lol!
@destiny1120: Fort Myers Beach is nice.
We plan to go on a big trip in 2012 but I would like to go on a pre- mini moon since we can't go after our wedding because of work. We are getting married in NY. Any ideas on places that are not a far drive from there to go?
@MsYellowJacket: Go to san diego!!! its amazing! I've been a few times. There's plenty of places to stay. We actually rented a house in Pacific Beach. The weather is amazing and there's so much to do. Coronado Island, the SD zoo, museums, just walking the gas lamp district, or relaxing on the beach. You can also rent a car and drive up the coast. Conversely, I've been to San Fran too and loved that as well, but the weather is SD is nice year-round. SF can get cool and foggy. But from SF you can also rent a car and check out wine country, or head south toward Montery Bay, Santa Cruz, Big SUr..

Hey Ladies!
My FI and I initially wanted to go abroad for our honeymoon, but due to finances, we ended up deciding to spend our honeymoon in the good ole U.S. of A! At first we looked into Hawaii, but even that was crazy expensive!! What helped to narrow our decision was when my aunt's S.O. agreed to let us use his timeshare property in Orlando, FL as a wedding present from him! Since our wedding will be in Georgia (our homestate), we will be able to drive and save additional money on airfare! In all, we spent $200 for 4 nights/5 days in a beautiful suite at the Westgate Resorts in Orlando---DisneyWorld, here we come!! I haven't been since I was 2 years old, so of course I don't remember a thing and am excited, not to mention the good shopping and eating there. At first, I didn't think I would be so excited about a domestic honeymoon, but as the days fly by I am getting more and more amped.
So....are there any other bees honeymooning domestically? I would love to hear your destinations, and even some things you might be doing on your trip! I look forward to hearing from you all!!
