Yeah I think switcing your name = a new card  :/  I just sent off my info and I’m pretty sure it didn’t get processed before the shutdown.

Actually, you officially change your name when you sign your marriage license (which is a local government function-so should be unaffected!). Then, you have to chase a bunch of state (RMV/DMV), federal (Social Security) and private (banks, ins companies, etc) entities to let them know that you’ve changed your name.

I’m not even going to bother with it until after the shutdown ceases.

@mspuppylove:  Are you sure that doesn’t depend on your state? In Missouri I was told I could decide to change anytime after I was married, it had nothing to do with when we sent in the license.

@mspuppylove:  that’s not true.

It depends on your state. In Wisconsin you have to sign your maiden name and then change your name after you receive your license.

@CloverQueen:  it depend what state you are in. Did you sign the license with your maiden name or married name? I had to sign with my maiden name in my state so my name wasn’t changed until I went and applied for a new SS card.

Uhhh… your name doesn’t legally change until you go change it at the Social Security office. You can go by whatever name you choose but legally, you’ll have your maiden name until you get it changed. First step is the SS office and then they tell you to go to the DMV.

Just don’t worry about it right now. I didn’t get my name changed until two months after my wedding. My credit cards don’t even have my married name on it yet.

@MRSsrm85:  LOL. This is correct. Your name is NOT officially changed just by getting married. I would just wait until after the shutdown is over.

I Thought I could mail my marriage cert along with a copy of my drivers license to the SS office in order to get my new card and they sent it back to me saying I had to provide them with the original drivers license. So I went last week (thank goodness!) just got my card in the mail yesterday. the DMV needs your marriage license in order to change your name.

@CloverQueen:  In VA, I was able to change my name at the bank after our wedding but before I got my new SS card.  This was necessary because so many of our wedding checks were made out to me with my married name.  I also changed my name with the utilities to match my bank account.  At work, I was able to change my name with HR and IT so that my email address was different as well.  When I got my SS card, I could change it with the DMV.

@CloverQueen:

Seems like it might depend on your State on what officiially changes your name. However, the SS office (at least where I live) uses your marriage license as evidence that you’ve changed your name. Therefore, it follows that your name is already officially changed and you are just updating the Social Security Administration (and then using the SS card to update most everyone else).

I too was able to use my marriage license to change many things such as my bank account, insurance companies, etc. If your license displays your new name, you could try changing some of those things while you wait for the Congress to stop being ridiculous!

We’re marrying in the Bahamas in two months – hoping this mess is sorted out by then. :-/
