Soon-to-be-FI and I are having a “planned elopement” to St. Augustine, Florida in May (and I say soon-to-be because he has my ring hidden somewhere in our apartment but I don’t have it yet!). We’re actually spending a week there at this charming inn where we are also having our wedding ceremony. I’ve been to St. Augustine once before and fell in love and the vibe is perfect for us. Plus, there’s a good mix of historic locations and outdoor activities that suit our style.
We’re both really excited about St. Augustine but as I read through these posts, part of me is feeling left out that we’re not going to some fancy exotic location or an all-inclusive resort. Not that we could afford it right now, but it does bum me out a little.
So fellow bees, I’m curious. If you didn’t go to a fancy or exotic location on your honeymoon, where did you go and what did you do?

- Wedding: January 2013 - Harbourfront Grand Hall
We’re going to the FL Keys (actually for another friends wedding so that makes it even less fancy!) My bff/moh and her husband went to the Rocky Mountains, they hiked and rode 4-wheelers and had an awesome cottage all to theirselves. Not your normal exotic honeymoon but it was so “them.”

We’re getting married in Scotland because that’s where FI’s parents live and they can’t travel. He grew up there and I’ve been there 3 times so we’ve both been there/done that. We just can’t justify the money on some grand trip when we’re spenign all that money on the wedding (and getting to the wedding)

We are getting married in July in his hometown, a small town in northern ohio. We will be spending our “honeymoon” most likely at our house. Which means wedding night here and if I am lucky FH might take a day off of work to relax a little.
Depending on life, money, and when we start TTC, I think we are planning a small long weekend getaway to Chicago sometime in the fall. But I seriously doubt it will happen because I know how our life goes and something always comes up.
However, I won’t let any of that get me down. I’m excited to marry my man and even if our wedding night and honeymoon is spent in town, I’ll be happy with that.

@iheartmarshall: you’re going to be SUPER jealous when you hear this! We are going to……wait for it…….STAY HOME AND REMODEL!!!! Yay!
We’re “eloping” in our own living room and having a dinner party. Once everyone leaves, and the grands take the kiddos for a few days, we’re just going to stay home ALONE! And keep working in all the remodels we’ve got going. Hopefully just the basement…cuz everything had best be DONE by wedding day Jan 19th I HOPE, please O please god!!!!
We are hoping for a Florida beach trip later in the year. We’ve got some family owned properties up the gulf coast and I’d really love to have some sand betwixt me toes sometime in 2013!!!

We considered just doing Key West or something but figured since it’s likely our last vacation alone for a while (planning to TTC right after the wedding) we better do it up!

We aren’t. We’re not even even taking a full honeymoon, just a mini moon for the weekend. We’re getting married too close to the holidays to try and travel more than we have to, since we already have to do that for family. We’re probably going to go to the beach for the weekend and then we’ll travel some next year. It still won’t be super exotic, but it’ll at least be fun.

We got married at a private estate near our home and we had a mini-moon in Seattle (4 days total).
That’s not to say that Seattle isn’t “fancy”, just that it’s not high on the list of most common honeymoon destinations. We had an amazing time exploring Seattle and the surrounding area, ate some truly awesome food, and enjoyed beautiful sunsets/views together. Do whatever makes you happy and don’t worry if it’s not the norm.

@mchitt329: Your friend’s Rocky Mountain honeymoon sounds fabulous!
We originally thought about Key West but after plane tickets, it got pricey fast. That’s another problem – our budget. We have about $2,500 to spend which is one reason why we decided to have a wedding/honeymoon in one and make the most of our budget. St. Augustine is still a 12-hour drive from where we live, but it’s not as tropical as the islands and places down south. We even thought about doing a staycation in our state but SO has never seen the ocean and really wants to, so that aided our decision as well.
Thank you to everyone who has replied, though! This has definitely given me a pick-me-up 🙂

We are going to Las Vegas. Most people wouldn’t find this fancy, but my FI and I have never been so it should be fun. And it is cheap! Another plus 🙂

Thats were my parents got married and honeymooned. They love it so much that we have to vacation there every summer :}

We might go to Montana, up the California coast to Washington state (we live in California, so this would not be a stretch), or maybe Colorado. We’re most likely staying in the contiguous Unites States.

We are going to the Shenandoah Valley for ours! We rented a cabin for a week and plan to ride horses through the National park, visit wineries, ride 4-wheelers, go zip-lining, go hiking, kayak, fish, etc. Pretty much enjoy the beautiful mountains since October is the best time of year there. And a bonus is that it’s only a 3 hour drive from our home 🙂

@IzzyBear: Jealous! We have plans to visit but it never crossed our minds to make it a honeymoon destination. That sounds great, though!

My parents went camping. They got married in August before they had to go back to university and then they just camped their way down to Wyoming from Canada. I don’t think they have any complaints! They go on tons of trips now so they have more than made up for it.
