I have very fair skin, so tanning is out. Then I just heard an interview on Fresh Air (NPR) this afternoon discussing SPF and the affects of sunburn.... which pretty much makes me want to hide out in the shade for the rest of my life. :) Seriously though, I try to wear sunscreen on a daily basis and do my best wear protective clothing if I know I'll be in direct sun exposure. Anyone else avoiding the sun and tanning salons?
I didn't tan at all for my wedding and my photographer said that I'm one of his favorite brides because I don't tan! Pale girls unite!
I listened to NPR today too! 1 in 6 people get skin cancer?!??!? OMG!
Have you tried Mystic? My SIL is a regular and she always looks great!
I'm just concerned about being even! I tan very easily and already have a "driving arm", add to that my dress has a low back I pretty much want to wear long sleeve shirts all the time now! le sigh.
i used to love getting a summer tan, but i think i look better paler so i'm all about the sunblock and hats now. ![]()
also i have spent a ton of time in the sun in my youth sans sunblock, so i try to be vigilant with my skin inspections.
I have very, very fair skin but I haven't yet ruled out tanning prior to the wedding. As long as I can get started early enough (months and months before the wedding), I may be okay. I don't really want to get dark, I just don't want to look overly pasty.
I'm not tanning! I am afraid of the sun, too! No skin cancer or premature wrinkles for me, thanks! I haven't decided if I'm gonna be going "pale" or if I'm gonna do a very SUBTLE amount of sunless tanning lotion.
NO WAY! I have never ever been tanning and I never intend to go. I'm very fair skinned and my mom has had to have several problem spots burned off her face repeatedly -- fortunately, none have ever been cancerous.
I also heard that Chile has a huge ozone depletion problem on that NPR show and I thought of Miss Bear Cub :( Sunblock, BCs!!!
Within a couple of months of moving to LA, I got hyperpigmentation on my face from the sun. Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done to get rid of it, thank god for makeup! Anyway, since then, I avoid the sun, so I would never go tanning. I was considering doing spray tanning before the wedding because my dress is backless. But then I thought, "we need to bring pale back!" (kind of like bringing sexyback...) I think it's a shame that when someone has a tan, they are considered healthy looking! So, I'm going to be pale and proud! (sorry for my rant...I just think everyone should know that aside from cancer, the sun can leave its mark in other ways).
I definitely won't be tanning - I am extremely pale and my dad is a skin cancer survivor, so I try not to take chances. I have the "pink" fair type of skin, so I don't think Mystic will work for me - I will be pale on the day (maybe a little freckled depending on the weather)!
I think there's a difference between going to the tanning bed and laying out in the sun every once in awhile. I have fair skin too, but I really enjoy being out in the sun and going to the lake, beach and pool. I wear SPF 30 on my body (the spray sunscreens are great because you can really cover everywhere) and SPF 55 on my face and I wear a large hat to cover my face. Using that system, I never burn and I have a nice, natural looking tan.
I know that skin cancer is scary, but you CAN have fun in the sun and avoid trouble if you're careful! My bachelorette party is this weekend in Charleston, and I know that laying out will be a big activity. In honor of that, I bought a new, wide brimmed straw hat tonight at JCrew (on sale for $13!!). :)
I'm so pale, i'm always pale, I'm so not gonna fake and bake just for my wedding, it's not me, I never have a tan, I barely get one in the summer. I would feel like it wasn't me when I get the pictures back.
I absolutely avoid tanning--I'm pretty fair and burn easily. Also, I have a grandma who is 91 with practically NO wrinkles. She told me years ago that the best thing I could do for myself is wear sunscreen and a hat whenever I'm out in the sun. I try my best to follow her advice, not only do I not want to get skin cancer, but I want to look as fab as she does at her age.
I do use self-tanner (currently Olay Touch of Sun) and did that the week before the wedding. I didn't feel so pale and it's not bad for your skin.
No tanning for me. I go Irish Tropic at the beach... you know, spf 75, huge floppy hat, sunglasses, and a coverup of some sort.
I'm not normally tan, so why would I tan on my wedding day? I don't understand that. So I'll look like Casper in my photos... which will be accurate, I <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic">am Casper.
Plus, mom and grandma have both had skin cancer, and FH's father died of melanoma a few years ago. No one in this family tans on purpose for those three reasons.
haha, pengy! :) Yes, I regularly wear sunblock!
The sun is definitely WAY more intense in south america. I ALWAYS wear sunblock, and usually 50+. If I want to "tan" I wear spf 30!
I'm beginning to like the whole "pale skin" thing, though. Why should I try to change who I am? besides, I'd hate to have tan lines with my dress! so tacky :p
I'm not tanning! No way! I love my skin the way it was meant to be-- pale. I don't see the point in damaging my skin, just to look darker. What's the point? :) "Love the skin you're in" and all that...
I am snowy, ivory, alabaster white, and I have no intention of getting tan for my wedding day. I don't like the way I look when I've had some sun--super freckly, uneven, and burned, usually. I don't plan on doing spray tan, either. I've never been tan in my life......my family and friends would not recognize the bronze girl coming down the aisle!
I have never been tanning, and don't plan to
I'm snow white, stark, blinding white (no exagerrations, lol!). I have been wearing SPF 30-55 every day since end of middle school, and two layers of it on my face- I like the heavy contrast (black hair, white skin, blue eye). I have two mortal fears, and one of them is being even the slightest bit tan- the thought horrifies me!!! I don't even swim because I don't want to be in the sun- if I go the beach, I'm in 8 layers of sunscreen, pants, long sleeves, and the biggest hat I can find, with an umbrella. I'm not paranoid about skin cancer or anything, it's just vanity
My once pale sister is the utter opposite though and so is my Dad- they are about 100 shades darker than I am, near brown/orange, from years of sun exposure (though sis's is mostly the effects of the tanning bed!)
I won't! I'm just NEVER tan -- I totally can, but choose not to -- so I'd definitely not look like myself if I were tan for the wedding. Pale brides unite!
I'm so happy to see I'm not the only one who's not tanning for their wedding. I'm not pasty or pale, but I'm definitely not tan. I watch my skin closely as I burn easily and I don't want to look like I'm 40 by the time I'm 30! I do get some color being outdoors at the lake and doing yard work and such, but I wear sunscreen religiously. I'm going to try the Olay Touch of Sun stuff just to add a bit more color and some glow.
I'm not tanning (on purpose) or using self-tanner. I don't really buy into the whole "you must look radiant [read: like a different person] on your wedding day!" bull. =) Also, I like my pale skin!
I tan really easily (wiithout trying) and am trying desperately to keep myself even...I would hate to have tan lines in my dress - yikes!
I'm not naturally tanning. Not planning on self tanner, but if I'm still rocking the farmer's tan in three weeks, I may pick up a tub of self tanner.
@ Miss Lab you made me giggle
I'm not tanning either - because I not only burn, I freckly like CRAZY. I'm already way more freckled than I'd like to be for my wedding because I've spent so much time outside this summer hiking and boating (gotta love the friends who just bought a lake house!) - wearing sun-block of course! I mean, I guess if you're a naturally tan person, then of course you'd want to look like that for your wedding. But I (like many of you) am naturally part albino, and I'd rather look like myself in my pictures anyway. That's why I went with a gold dress... I didn't want to blend in with my white dress
I'm not tanning. I have pale skin and burn if I spend five minutes in the sun without sunblock. After my dad died from melonoma, it pretty much sealed the deal for me.
I don't like the sun; the feeling is mutual. My skin has forgotten how to tan; the few times I've gotten inadvertent sun exposure without protection over the last 15 or so years, the exposed patches have burned, then faded back to white. I'm seriously considering using bleaching cream to do away with the freckles on my face and shoulders (because apparently even the minimal amount of sun exposure to keep me from collapsing from vitamin D deficiency activates my melanin). I was thrilled to find out that Neutrogena's Ultra-Sheer Dry-Touch sunblock now comes in SPF +100.
So, as you may guess, I will not be tanning before the wedding! My dress is ivory, so my pale skin should be a nice contrast. I'm just stocking up on sunscreen and breaking out my hats. But to each her own.
(I should also mention that I'm vain and figure that sun avoidance is cheaper and easier than a facelift down the road. People ALWAYS think I'm younger than I am; part of that is the fact that my skin has gotten less sun exposure than most women's my age.)
I am crazy pale. I have the whole "is she dead" look going on. It took YEARS for me to not hate my skin (I tried tanning beds, laying out on black trampolines covered in crisco, going out in the sun with zero sunblock- all I got was a horrible burn that would flake away), but now I am embracing it!!!
I look to Nicole Kidman for inspiration on pale beauty... and no, I am not tanning before my wedding. Besides, legs are usually the weirdest pale body parts, and they won't be showing!!!
Well, being preggo, definitely not using a tanning bed....
But I am one of those nervous splotchy people, where I get on the spot and my chest gets red splotches? Anyone else? I need to start a post about this :) ....anyway, ususally being tan helps mask this as red hides with browns/tans (dare i say Lindsey Lohan orange) better than white....so I may do a spray tan just to help my self esteem in that area. But living in Bama, even in early/mid fall I may still be able to lay out some (with SPF, esp on the belly which i hear burns easily!)
Definitely not tanning. I have however spent the entire last year being very careful about tan lines, because they last seriously forever on me. I even bought a special strapless bikini for my last sunny vacay. I will be pale, but at least evenly pale
Pale skin here too! I don't ever tan, and I won't. I'm too nervous about skin cancer and getting leathery skin earlier than I need to! Haha.
I try really hard to keep from tanning. My skin is sort of naturally olive, so even with tons of sun screen I get a tan... But living in Seattle, I can get pretty pasty in the winter!
I like my skin and I want it to look good into my old age, so I try to avoid sun exposure (especially on my face). Plus I abused my skin a lot as a lifeguard and a snowboard instructor, so I'm trying to make up for it now. Being a pasty bride is fine by me!
Nope. I'm getting married at the end of the summer, so I may airbrush to even out tan lines at the most.
(((paleness)))
I NEVER tan - but I'm also allergic to the sun (seriously - i get INCREDIBLE sun poisioning if i don't use SPF 50 when I am outside for a long period of time).
My MOH keeps telling me I "need" to tan - because she does ALL the time - but I honest to god just can't. My dress, however, is ivory so that might help and not make me look so pale! :)
When I was dress shopping I went to one shop where the woman told me I should def. tan if I want to wear white because I am SO fair. I was like yeah not buying anything here, lady! because I was seriously
offended by her brash statement.
I'm also REALLY fair and in the past 4 years I've had several surgeries to remove pre-cancerous moles and other questionable areas of skin off of my back, shoulder and chest. Last summer I had a pretty big part of my shoudler cut out and had 10 stitches from teh surgery. It took a while to heal and I have a HUGE scar.
Needless to say, I will be using the fake tanner spray and hoping VERY much that my future kid's will get my FI's skin and not mine.
I was a pale bride! I have never tanned and never plan on it. I am always covered up on the beach!
