I was on it for about 6 months last year. I had a really bad time on it unfortunately. I was CRAZY, I'm shocked FI put up with it. I would cry at the drop of a hat, (I'm not an emotional person by any means) and I would get super pissed off for the dumbest things. The mood swings didn't last too long but they were bad when they happened. I switched to Ortho-Tri-Cyclen Lo after that, because the doc said there was too much estrogen in the Yaz. I just started Lo Estrin 24fe, because I still had pretty bad cramps on the OTC-Lo. I hope my sex drive doesn't go away!
I am, and I have been for years (well, it used to be Yasmin...) and I haven't had any nasty side effects. I hope all goes well for you!
I was, for about a year, and I went off of it. I had ZERO sex drive on it, and it made me kinda blah. Not crazy, but seriously, I had no personality lol, I hated it. Im off BC altogether now
I've been on Yaz for over a year now--no problems really. Before I was on ortho-tricyclen lo and still had pretty bad periods, but with Yaz sometimes they only last a day or two and are so light! My skin has also benefited from Yaz. Everyone's body is different, but you can always start and if you don't like it, switch to something else. Good luck!
I was on yaz for a few months and i had a bad time with it. i did have problems with mood swings and bleeding outta no where.(sorry disguting i know:( )
Thanks for sharing, ladies. I am going to talk with my doctor today about what I should do. I did a lot of research last night and I'm hesitant to try it right before the wedding- what if I go nuts with mood swings and depression, etc?! I think I'm going to ask her to have me stick with LoEstrin 24 for right now and then try switching after the wedding. I didn't want to have the low sex drive stuff for the honeymoon and all but it might be the lesser evil in the event I get really moody/emotional!!
I was on Yaz for about seven months. Things were swell until I started to bleed...and didn't stop! I had a period for about a month before I was switched to another pill.
I was on it for more than a year before the breakthrough bleeding starting happening allll the time. So my doc switched me to ortho ti cyclen. She told me she was "so over Yaz" too. I really liked it before that. Very short periods and no cramps. Good luck at the doctors!
I've been on it since the end of '07 and have no complaints with it. It is the first one that didn't cause me problems; I was on one that I loved but the headaches were terrible so I had to get off of it.
I am on Yasmin and I quite like it. I rarely have problems with monophasic pills (but I HATE triphasics), none have made me moody or totally disinterested in sex or whatever. The thing I like most about Yasmin, and why I chose it, is the drospirenone. It's a diuretic and it really helps combat bloating and water retention, which was a problem for me even though I have very little processed food (salt) in my diet.
So I wasn't able to talk to my doctor bc of the holiday (I forgot about that)- and I'm supposed to start on Yaz on Sunday.. but I do have one more pack of my LoEstrin24.. what would you guys advise doing? Should I wait one more month to switch so that it's not too terrible these last 2 months before the wedding in case I do get more depressed/emotional? Or just bite the bullet and switch now so there's time to go back to LoEstrin if I hate it?? I can't decide!!!
@monalisa, I know, I was an Alesse fan as well!!!
If the only prob with the LoEstrin24 is the low sex drive, I would stick with it till after the wedding/honeymoon...you already have enough on your mind right now that you dont need to worry about possible worse side effects than low sex drive. After all, I'm sure your sex drive will be just fine your wedding night (as you will feel beautiful!!) and your honey moon...just a thought...Once all the wedding hooplah is done, then switch to try it out. If you switch now, you are already under some stress I'm sure that it could make the side effects (if any) worse!
THanks Papples, I spoke to my fi about it actually and even though he was excited for me to try a new pill to see if my drive came back, he totally agrees that with those common side effects of Yaz (moodiness, depression, anxiety) it's a bad idea to switch right before the wedding. So I'm going to tell my doctor the decision on Monday if I can get in touch with her!!
Thanks for all your help!!
I had to switch to Yaz, because on Orthocyclen, I was a raging b**** for months.
My sex drive still hasn't come back after about 6 months on this, but it may just be my stress levels. I actually got on Yaz to combat moodiness, depression, and anxiety, and it has been a miracle pill. I feel much more like myself now. I also love the shorter period, and the cramps are nowhere near as bad as they were.
But I still have hormone-related migraines every month...but I had those before, so I wouldn't blame it on Yaz.
Everyone's body is different, though, so I definately would stick with your current pill until after the wedding.
I just started taking Yaz, I haven't even finished the first pack, so I'm definitely paying attention to what you ladies are saying and I'm going to watch my mood. Thanks :)
Hey everyone, I've just switched over to Yaz and just finished my second pack. So far I can't say I'm experiencing *more* moodiness as my hormones seem to go completely out of whack around that time of the month. Can't really complain about it. My doctor decided to switch me over after my complaints of severe migraines with my other pill.
Here's my concern...I find maybe it's a bit hard to shed weight. Now I know I've only been taking Yaz for 2 months (and it maybe too soon to blame it), but did anyone who switched over to Yaz noticed a weight gain?
I was on Tri-Sprintec and then some other generic version of ortho-tricyclen. Tri-Sprintec was fine, didn't really have any issues. The other generic made me feel nauseated if I didn't have breakfast with it, or if I forgot to take it and had to take two in one day. I had a terrible doctor who wouldn't listen to my concerns and tried to get me to stop taking it and use just condoms (um, no) and he didn't offer any reasoning for it. He was just like "So stop taking them!" And I asked to try Yaz since I have really awful PMS and he begrudgingly let me try it. (Delayed my prescription by almost a month!) I think he just didn't think I should be having sex if I wasn't married. It was a really strange situation, I felt like he made me jump through hoops to get my pills.
I'm not a huge fan of Yasmin (the generic). I don't think it has a big impact on my PMS. I was expecting to not be a monster, but instead, I'm just evil for like 1-3 days instead of 3-5. So I guess that's something. I keep hearing about these elevated risks and stuff and it kind of scares me. And I feel like it makes it a lot harder to lose weight, and I'm just more emotional. lol, I cry when I hear sappy songs on the radio... I really want to switch to Seasonale (fewer periods, heck yes!) but I'm not real keen on going to the doctor anytime soon. Blehhh. I hate when doctors don't discuss things honestly with their patients.
I just switched to Yaz and haven't finished a pack yet. I was on LoEstrin before. I mostly liked LoEstrin (my cramps were basically non existant, shorter, lighter period) but I was getting to a point that I was PMSing for like 2 weeks! No thanks. It would also give me headache, though they weren't migraines and an ibpuprofen would do the trick to get rid of it. My sex drive was meh. I WANTED sex, but I had a hard time getting in the mood...
So far on Yaz, I've been less moody I think (I'm nearing the end of the pack-- will start a new one next week). I've had a couple of headaches, but they may or may not have been pill related. It's too early to tell. I've had a bit of naseau, but again, I don't entirely know if it's pill related (never had that problem before). It hasn't been too bad where it effects my daily life though, just makes me less keen on eating. I've also been having sore swollen breasts quite a few days, which is again, a symptom I never had before and it's really not fun... We'll see how it goes though!
@mnmgirl08---the same thing happened to me, I went nuts! My doctor wanted to put me on anti-depressants it was so bad, but I just switched birth control. I'm on Nuva Ring now and couldn't be happier.
I was on YAZ a few years ago but switched to Seasonique b/c the idea of only 4 periods/year was fantastic. I recently switched back to YAZ b/c I had tons of breakthrough bleeding and was quite emotional with Season (however, I had a good sex drive). Now, things are OK but I'm good with a few times a month for sex where it was ALL THE TIME before. oh well.
I'm on Yaz and have no issues. It's different for everyone though.
Yaz made me go bat-nuts crazy the day before my period, every time. I'd be paranoid, crying, totally irrational-- it was AWFUL. :-/
I was tri-levlen and went CRAZY! I cried allll the time so I stopped taking it. Then I was on Desogen after I had an ovian cyst and was told I HAD to be in the pill. Desogen made me so so so moody. I had such a short fuse and was kinda depressed. So at this years check up I asked to be put on Yaz and I LOVE IT!!!
Yaz has helped my mood swings, lightened my cramps, and made me a lot nicer to be around according to my family. As long as I take it everyday at the same time I dont have any break through bleeding. Hopefully you find one that works for you! Good Luck!
I really think you have to have diagnosed PMDD (low hormone levels) to go on this pill. Before i started on it last year for my PMDD and chronic headaches, i read hundreds of reviews saying how awful it was for so many people. I was so scared to start on it! I litlerally went to my mom crying about it I was so scared. I started on it anyways and had my mom and FI watch for someone the moodswings/depression i read about. Excpet, I had NO sideffects other than my boobs getting bigger. I was not sick, not tired, nothing. I felt a million times better on the pill than off the pill (i had to the dramatic mood swings before being on it.)
So really, talk with your doctor and make sure it is right for YOU. It is not right for everyone, only those with PMDD.
Yeah...a friend of mine tried it for a while and went suicidal. It was pretty darn scary. She started taking it and all her emotions and energy just disappeared within 48 hours, it really shook her up. :( Be careful with whatever bc you're taking!
Nearing the end of my 2nd pack, and so far things are a bit better than my first. Less nausea, though still a tiny bit, and boobs have been waaay less sore, though they're bigger (one of my bras totally did not fit at all the other day, and I didn't notice until after I got to work. ugh!) My cramps were actually more severe than on LoEstrin (though not as bad as when I wasn't on BC at all) and it lasted like a week :( I'm hoping its shorter and lighter this month, and if not, I'll switch back or look for something else since getting rid of cramps and shorter periods are the main reasons I'm on BC at all. I've had one headache so far, and it was a bad one, worse than on the LoEstrin, but still not quite a migraine. Also, I've been getting a few more pimples though i haven't changed my skin care products or regiment at all. I'm guessing it's my body still getting used to the new hormones, but we'll see.
My mood is great on Yaz. Waaay better than Ortho TriCyclen. Sex drive, however, is pretty none existent.
I was on Yaz for years and switched to Yasmine about a year ago. I haven't had big problems with mood swings or depression on either of them, and I've been on various pills for so long I have no idea if it's zapped my sex drive (isn't that sad?). I liked Yaz, but after a couple of years I had a lot of break through bleeding, and when I mentioned that to my doc, she suggested I step up the dose.
When I go back, I think I'm going to switch again--my PMS has been way worse on Yasmine. I would have gone back to switch earlier, but my doc was on maternity leave for so long that I couldn't see her until right before our wedding, and decided to wait for my annual check up.
My doc put me on it the minute she found out about it. I trusted her. What I noticed was the weight gain and irritability. I went off it 4 mo. later. I now see all those commercials when they spend more time giving disclaimers SCARY.
Hey! I'm so glad this board is still going strong! Sorry for my hiatus. I switched to Yaz and I'm on the last active day of my first pack today, actually. So far, so good. I noticed a slight increase in my sex drive and some breast soreness, but other than that I pretty much feel just normal. So that's a good thing! Haven't gained any weight and my skin is clear but I think it's too early to tell about the weight. I think what will also complicate things for me is that I just started taking Chantix, which has a TON of side effects! So I don't think I will really know any others of my Yaz side effects til I'm off the Chantix, mood-wise.
Anyway so good to hear all of your input! Thanks!

Hi Ladies,
I just posted in the "Anyone on HBC" thread but wanted to see if anyone is on Yaz (or has been) and how they feel about it. I know it's different for everyone but I'm switching to it from Lo Estrin 24fe (due to zero sex drive and being fed up with that) starting next week and I'm kind of nervous. My doc warned me about breakthrough bleeding and wants to see how I do on it for 3 months before trying another type of pill. I just wish they still made Alesse... it worked so well for me for 8 years! Anyway please share your experiences with Yaz. Thanks so much!!
