I'm getting a tanning bed membership August 1st for the September 24th, 2011 nuptials. This should give me plenty of time to have some "color" and not be whiter than my dress at this point...
I have a lady I go to for Spray Tan and she does it on her own (not from a booth or anything) and it looks GREAT! NO orange and NO streaking! If you were in Florida, I'd recommend her to you!
Good Luck:)
Good question. I tanned for about 3 weeks prior to my wedding day. I wasn't super dark, nor was I pasty white. I just wanted to have some color (so, I wouldn't be the color of my gown either lol). I think it was a great choice because then I had a base tan for our HM to the Cayman Islands.
I know everyone is going to tell you not to do this but I went to the tanning bed 3 times (the only 3 times in my life). I wanted color and I was really worried about burning when I went from NJ to FL. I also laid out a few days before the wedding but I was so paranoid about getting tan lines that I wore tons of sunscreen.
I used the tanning bed before the wedding and hated it, my skin turned super dry and flakey. My make-up doesn't even go on well when I use the tanning bed. I did get an airbrush tan though and loved it.
I went and I'm so glad I did. I have pictures of me at my fittings pre-tanning vs final fitting where I was tan and its a world of difference.
Yes go tan, its wonderful and relaxing, just be careful not to burn and wear a bronzer when you go in. Everyone looks better with a little color :)
I plan on tanning starting about 3 months before my wedding. I am really white and I know that I will burn and not be able to go for a few days and then it will take a while to get a good base etc.. damn red hair and fair skin!!! I have contomplated getting a spray tan but I just am picturing that end really badly!! Like a bunch of orange coming off on my dress... something dreadful so ya I think Im going to end up fake baking for a bit!
I plan on visiting a tanning bed the week before our wedding. Our is a beach wedding so I want to make sure I don't blend into the dress OR the sand!
I'm tanning for the first time in my life. I'm pasty white as well. but I'm not really tanning for the wedding. I'm tanning for a beach trip with my girls : )
I am having this same debate! I have sworn off tanning beds (I'm a cancer survivor and my father just got diagnosed with skin cancer.) I've spent my summer as a new mom dreaming of the tanning bed, but I am just going to be satisfied with being pale, and taking every opportunity I can to lay out when my fiance is home to watch our son. My wedding is October 15..and I have to have a little color. I really don't want to go to the tanning bed, but I've never had a spray tan and I have fears of being orange or streaking :(
I love tanning, I just put on a mild SPF sunscreen (and a gel stick on my tattoos) and lay in sun (or the tanning bed) and reap the vitamin D =D I think it's great for a bride to be because the UV light helps keep skin clear, blemishes aren't as noticeable on tan skin anyways, you can see muscular lines better, your teeth look whiter, and frankly the 'sunshine' vitamin is extremely mood effecting, I'm always happiest with a little glow! Just so long as you do put some sort of sun screen on so you don't just insta burn with your lovely light skin!!
I have way too many moles to ever tan in a bed again! I've had 2 skin cancer scares, and I am doing whatever I can to make sure I don't ever actually get it. I've already had cervical cancer, so I know the cells generate in my body.
TO me, a tan is just not worth it. I'd rather get a professional spray tan
oh ALSO: If you are taking a honeymoon to anyplace tropical you should DEFINITELY tan before your wedding so you don't spend your entire honeymoon burnt!
thanks ladies, I think I am going to tan starting Sept 1..that gives me 6 weeks before the wedding. Not that I'll tan the entire 6 weeks, but like organizedbride11 , I burn initially, and then take a week or 2 to brown out (and Im NOT a redhead, im a brunette). Id say by end of Sept, I should know if I've had enough. I dont want a "deep dark island tan mon", just a touch of color.
p.s. - no tropical honeymoon, we are going on an Alaskan cruise :)
I wonder how early is too early to tan? I'm not sure if I should get a membership one month or two months before the wedding?
Definitely tanning though. Everything looks better and thinner when tan! lol
@MrsSl82be: I am from Maryland too, grew up in Baltimore city Hon! I totally understand where you are coming from after having cancer issues. My mom had her left eye removed from cancer when I was 6 (im now 41), and we have all been so lucky in that no one else in the family, generations up or down, has gotten cancer. Its ALWAYS in my mind tho, specially with tanning beds and not using sunscreen in general. Here's hoping you are now free and clear with a good bill of health! Thanks for sharing.
airbrush tanning (not spray) is much better, lasts longer and doesn't rub off with sweat. also, it is far more even. you can get a good airbrush tan (full body and face) for around $60.00. make sure you go to a place that ONLY does airbrush tanning though, so you know they have a lot of experience. another idea is to do a trial run months before to see if you like the way it looks. in my experience it looks very natural. i have meduium to tan skin naturally. i am doing a combo of real sun/tanning beds before my wedding, which is on the beach in august. i live right on the beach but it has been too hot to lay out - even with the ocean right there!
@PinkMagnolia: i would do 2 months. it will take you a good 2 weeks of going every other day before establishing a base tan. also, use a good bronzer...it really enhances the color.
@PinkMagnolia: Do you hold a tan long? I would think if you go two months out, that by your wedding, you should still have plenty of color. I only plan to go maybe 2-3 times a week for a month. Whatever fades before the wedding is fine, as I wont be soo dark as to be fake bake obvious.
hey just a quick thought - isn't it going to look weird that you're going to be tan for an october wedding? just wondering if the photos will look odd as i'm guessing guests will not be tan.
@sfchick: good point! and exactly where Im coming from with only wanting a hint of color. what do you gals all think?
@sfchick: I don't really think so. I know I start losing my color in mid-November, and that's just from being outside a normal amount of time.
I'm going to be laying outside a bit because when I'm pale I have a tellow tint to my skin and when I get a bit of a tan I have olive skin. :)
Yeah, I definitely did. I know it's SO bad for you, but I was NOT going to be white for my wedding day. I kept my membership up for the following month too because we're going on our honeymoon July 27 and we'll be at the beach in south France...don't want to be white in a bikini!
I work for a dermatologist...so I tan undercover LOL the doctor I work for would kill me if he knew! I just started up.. my wedding is in march.
Do spray. Tanning beds are so horrible for your skin, especially if you are pale. I am pale, but I just embrace my Irish white skin :)
I tanned for both my shower and my wedding. I think MY skin with a little color looks healthy and beautiful, it clears up acne and razorburn and I feel slimmer and sexier. Plus I flush really easily on my chest, neck and face when I'm super nervous and having a tan hides it. I'd rather be tan in my wedding pics than red!
I'm mostly worried about having white "tank top" lines above my strapless dress! argh! (I definitely do right now!) I will probably end up tanning for 3-4 weeks beforehand just to try to even out that color. (any other ideas?)
anyone tired Tomas self tanner? I did before we went to Cancun this past February. The directions actually call for you to put it on then sleep while it develops. Do that for 2 or 3 nights until you have reached your level of color. Anything that gets in the sheets does indeed wash out (I know, as I had to wash sheets) It works beautifully, but I think it stinks like hell.
Im also curious about the Tan Towel. They are supposed to work wonders but Ive never used them.
I tanned starting 2 months before the wedding. I didn't want to risk any issues with spray on tans. I don't usually tan, so I'm thinking only 2 months of my life isn't bad. Especially b/c I had to stay out of the beds for 2 weeks while on meds. I had just the right tan. I hope you find what works for you!

Im not a huge fan of sun"baking" in the dreaded heat, and Colorado is pretty much a land locked state, so no beach or ocean to go hang out and catch a ray or two :(
Mr McGowan has been teasing about me being "whiter" than my dress, and it has made me think if I should go tan a few times about a month before our wedding? I surely dont want to be too terribly pasty white during our special day. I had spray tan before and when i started to sweat it was actually running down off of me. What did you gals do or plan to do? Did ya say screw it and go in all your pale skin glory?
