I recently read an article in Bust magazine about how delightful it is to re-read the Little House on the Prarie series. I decided to give it a try and OMG....I could not put it down! I read the entire series in just a couple of weeks! My FI made fun of me but who cares? I was seriously enjoying myself. it's nice to take a break from grown-up books sometimes!
I loved Little House on the Prarie. I even own most of the later ones about her daughter, Rose. I used to have the entire 1st edition box set of the books, but they have been severely loved and most are in pretty bad shape.
I reread the westing game a few years ago, as it was my favorite book from 5th grade. I thought it was pretty good and brought me back to my childhood!
Oh...and I reread harry potter on a yearly basis- currently finishing book 6 for 10th time
I definitely spend lots of my time re-reading Judy Blume books. :-) I haven't yet gotten sucked back into The Babysitters Club though. Luckily. :-)
i would definitely love to reread the secret garden now that i think about it....
I've reread Little Women way too many times to count. I adore Louisa May Alcott's writing! It's great to go through and reread the books that influenced me when I was a child.
I do. I read a lot of Enid Blyton growing up and sometimes I pick them up to read again.
I do this on a yearly basis. My favorites: The Giver, The Great Gilly Hopkins, and Maniac McGee.
Luckily, I teach and get to reread my favorite childhood books to my students often. Roald Dahl has written some of my favorites.
I read the whole Little House on the Prairie series when I was younger and I remember that I loved it... that's a great idea!!
It is one of the best parts of being a mom-you get to reread all of them with your children :)
This summer I re-read most of the Anne of Green Gables series. Love it!
@CapeBoundBride: Absolutely this is one of the best part of teaching English Language Arts! I get to read kid/teen books all the time.
@agerard23: & @hermitcrab: count me as another fan of the westing game! i have a copy of it in my personal library.
i have a habit of rereading books [my former boss told me i was weird for doing that!] and currently my most read book is "the little princess" followed by "the count of monte cristo" and "the westing game." my copy of "the little princess" is lovingly tattered. i still get excited when miss minchin gets hers in the end. ahh, comeuppance, how i love thee. i might have to reread that tonight!
I LOVED 'Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing' By Judy Blume. We read it in elementary school. I'd really like to dig it out and read it again :)
Oh and I also loved the book 'The Outsiders'by S.E. Hinton.
I totally wanted to be a "greaser"...lol
How funny - as soon as I saw the title of your post, before opening the thread, I immediately thought about Little House on the Prairie! I love those books! My mom actually bought me the new collector's edition of the series last year for Christmas (and I'm 31 yrs old - ha!)
I've also taught 7th grade for the past couple of years and have really enjoyed re-acquainting myself with all my childhood favorites. Little Women is another fave I can't put down.... along with Harry Potter, although I read those in my 20s, so can't really classify them as childhood books!
@Mrs.tobe: I'm not sure I read that one, but I have seen the movies that were made out of the S. E. Hinton books, the ones with Diane Lane.
@kaylee26: It's a good read! I have it at the house actually :)
@yellowhammerlady: I've reread The Giver and Maniac Magee so many times!
Also love To Kill A Mockingbird, A Wrinkle in Time, and a few others. I love reading old favorites again, and it's astonishing how much more I read into them now than I did then! My 12th grade English teacher assigned us to reread and discuss a childhood favorite, and someone mentioned The Giver, and she talked about Jonah dying at the end. We were all like, "What??? No, he got to Elsewhere! Oh....yeah....that makes more sense. Aww man!"
All of the posts about favorite childhood books is bringing back such great memories. I loved Little Women (and Little Men), Little House on the Prarie and Anne of Green Gables. I re-read some of the books, but I think I may do so again!
All the time! It's a great way to decompress from the much-harder reading I have to do for my PhD. Several of the Little House books (although yikes, didn't realize the extent of the racism in it when I was little! Minstrel show, anyone?), Madeline L'Engle, The View from Saturday (LOVE!!), Roald Dahl (esp. Matilda), and some embarrassing fantasy novels that I can't bring myself to name. ;)
@Miss OBG: Oh Holy goodness! I just re-read 'To Kill a Mockingbird' not long ago...
And I loved looking at the illustration on the cover of 'A Wrinkle in Time' ;)
I almost forgot about 'Of Mice and Men'... that was another favorite.
Damn. So many books so little time.
@Miss OBG: maniac magee! maniac maniac he's so cool. maniac maniac don't go to school. runs all night, runs all right, maniac maniac kissed a bull! LOL. one of my students in my sunday school class brought that book with her once and i got so excited. i had to force myself to pay attention to the lead teach and NOT reach over and grab her book.
yay, now I want to go and read some judy blume!
this thread makes me very happy :)
I'm getting my MA right now in Childrens Literature (and hopefully will incorporate it into my PhD later on down the road)
this is going to sound so bizarre but my favorite was always The Indian in the Cupboard lol!
Oh man, I re-read kid books all the time! : D I love Dahl, and the Little House series, and Dr. Seuss, man!
ETA: I re-read Harry Potter, the Twilight Saga, and the trilogy with The Sweet Far Thing at least once a year.
I have def reread Little House On The Praire a couple times in my adulthood.
I picked up a use set a couple years ago and plan to give it to our child when they are old enough. :)
Recently one of my favorite childhood series The Boxcar Children came out in ebooks so I've been rereading those! So nostalgic!
Yes! I actually have recently re-read some of my childhood favorites:
Class Pictures by Marilyn Sachs
Fifteen by Beverly Cleary
Hangin' Out With Cici by Francine Pascal
And I really want to reread Island of the Blue Dolphins. Can't remember who it's by though.
@zippylef: The term "severely loved' made me happy.
The secret garden was my favorite childhood book, and I reread it reasonably recently.
I love the Hobbit. I have been reading it once a year since I was 4. It is just amazing. Cannot wait for the movie.
I LOVE the Chronicles of Narnia and read through the whole set at least once a year!
