I'm seriously considering trying to sew my own CDs and was wondering if anyone else has done this...

What kind did you make? What fabrics did you use? Did you use a free pattern, buy one, ormake your own? What kind of closures did you use? Any other tips?

Right now I want to make pocket diapers with a microfleece inner and PUL outer. I'm hoping to use some online tutorials as well as using some disposables to make my own pattern and I wanna use snap closures, mainly because I think they're cute, lol.

I've been looking at fabrics on eBay and they're actually pretty inexpensive (not to mention ADORABLE)! And I'm excited to use any extra PUL to make matching bibs!

    Any insight is much appreciated!

My Midwife has a pattern that she shares with her mommas. When she said that I said I considered trying and she said that cloth diapers aren't a good first time sewing project so that deterred me enough to just look into buying them. lol

My husband wanted to make cloth diapers, but I found Bum Genius 3.0 on ebay for cheaper than it would be for us to make them when you consider time and money.

@amnystik: I've sewn before. Not a TON, but enough that I think I can handle the project.

@TheFutureMcBride: Wow, how cheap did you find them? I'm pricing the project to be between $4 and $6 per diaper if I purchase my fabrics in lots off eBay.

@Navy_Wife: I found some for $6 a piece on ebay and happened upon some on Craigslist for a little over $5 a piece. It was just waiting and getting lucky on ebay.

Until he poops in them ten times a day for the first two months of life. I hope you make a lot diapers! Seriously, the poop the first two months is ridiculous. We went through 8-10 diapers a day or more just FYI. There was poop everywhere-even on my china cabinet! Surprised It was shocking! lol!

@flamingred: Whether I make them or buy them they're gonna need a lot! And if I make them, might as well make them cute!

@flamingred: And for the newborn phase I'll probably do prefolds with covers and you don't need to was the cover everytime you change the diaper; I've read for newborns you should have around6 covers, which shouldn't be that bad to make.

I'm not sure if you are a FB fan of Applecheeks but they posted yesterday that if any WAHMs are intersted in remants of PUL that they have extras they are offering up.  Supposedly you can email amy [at] applecheeks.com to get the details.

@Navy_Wife: I am just worried for you! haha. I guess maybe because for me, I was shocked at the diaper changing- esp if you are going to BF- it was constant. I just remember thinking "Dear Lord, is this all I am going to do for the rest of my life!" I really wished someone had warned me about the poo.

I think the amount of poo just depends on the baby. Our little girl is 6 weeks old and she just has one poo a day. It's usually a good size poo, but we use flushable liners so you just lift it right out of the diaper and toss it in the toilet.

I know nothing about sewing diapers but I just wanted to say I think it's awesome that you would make them! We went for the lazy person route and bought bum genius elemental, which is one size and all in one. They were $25 a diaper, but well worth it for us. And I understand about wanting them to be cute, having all the fun colors makes diaper changing so much more fun!

@artbee: haha, I'm the lazy one...I'm not working! At this point I'm looking for things to do! But, we hot pregnant RIGHT before DH got transferred, so there's no point in trying to find a job for 8 months since I plan on being a SAHM

    @Navy_Wife: oh I got distracted:

I had a bit of advice...I made cloth diapers for a friend, I patterned it off of a diaper she had (an OsoCozy I think?) I made them in an organic cotton and a poly urethane laminate with a baby's velcro opening! They turned out really nice, and once I got good at it I could churn them out at about 3/hour (including cutting), not really sure of the cost because she bought the materials though!

One thing I'm compelled to tell you is that when working with any plastic like material use a greater stitch length! The longer the stitch the less holes, the less holes the less weak points! I think  I made them at a 3.5 stitch! Good luck! It was a fun project, I'll definitely do it for my kids too.

@Navy_Wife: I'm not working either. I also quit my job and then decided not try for another one b/c we wanted kids soon anyway. But now that the baby is here it is nice to have all the diapers put together for you so you don't have to assemble. It's amazing how much time a baby takes out of your day! Plus, I really don't think my husband would have been ok with the cloth diaper route if he had to do more work than disposables.
