I wanted it, he wasn’t for it. He has more than me. And I’m happy we have it. With our generation, you never know… and I wanted to protect my future husband from the person I “could” become if we ever divorced on unhappy terms. I look at it like insurance, bumper to bumper full coverage!

I wouldn’t be against one, but I would make sure it protected us both.

For example, if we have a child and I stayed home for a few years, then my earning power might be compromised, yes? Especially if I had custody of hypothetical child after the split. I’m a chef, and this would make it difficult to work nights and weekends. Which in turn would limit opportunities. So I would need more child support and may be entitled to spousal support, since my earning power was theoretically injured by our marriage.

Or, if we moved to another country for his job (possible) and I was legally unable to work, then my career would certainly be affected. I would volunteer and stuff, sure, but it wouldn’t be building my credentials.

He in turn might like to protect the massive retirement savings he has been building up for the last 5 years. It is fairly substantial, and while we were together all that time, we didn’t live together and it wouldn’t be fair for me to take any of it.

As long as it was negotiated in good faith, then I think they are ok.
